Steak 'n Shake, the diner-style restaurant chain located primarily in the Midwest and South and known for its Original Steakburger and hand-dipped milkshakes, is making its first foray into Arizona -- by way of Tempe's Mill Avenue.

Founded in Illinois in 1934 by Gus Belt, Steak 'n Shake will open its Tempe location at 699 South Mill Avenue (on the northeast corner of Mill and Seventh Street in the front of the former Borders) in the next few months.

Beloved by the late movie critic Roger Ebert, who said, "If I were on Death Row, my last meal would be from Steak 'n Shake," the restaurant chain has nearly 500 franchised and company-owned locations in 22 states.

My family has missed this place since we left the East Coast in 2000. It is about time! For those of you who have never had it, please make time to try it, you won't be sorry. My late father was a district manager for them for years in the 80s. Great burgers and the shakes are off the hook.

Eat enough of this greasy crap and your last meal won't be that far off.

When's the White Castle opening. After all, there are more people from Chicago living in Phoenix, then there are people from Chicago living in CHICAGO. ;-)

Tony, I'm from Illinois and I have never heard anyone ever call it that! It's freaking delicious! Can't wait! I go to Steak and Shake everytime I'm home visiting it's our first stop once we leave the airport!

Being from Arizona and now living in the midwest I can safely say that I'd rather stick to Whataburger or In N Out. Steak N Shake is crap.

Ha...I wouldn't go around bragging about this. Back in IL this joint is referred to as "steak and puke".
