Now here's a kick in the asphalt.

Coup Des Tartes, the romantic French bistro and oldest B.Y.O.B. in Phoenix, is being forced out of its former historic farmhouse home at 4626 North 16th Street to make way for a parking lot.

A press release from the 17-year-old restaurant says that on June 1, new landowners the Van Tuyl Group, an automotive consulting firm with offices in Arizona, Kansas, and Texas, gave Coup Des Tartes 180 days to move out of their location so that the building can be torn down and the land used for overflow car dealership parking.

"They want to pave our paradise to put up a parking lot, literally," says Coup Des Tartes owner Ron Pacioni. "It breaks our heart."

Pacioni adds that he is continuing to talk with a representative from Van Tuyl in hopes that he can prevent the move and that relocating the restaurant -- which will stay open during the transition -- by the end of the year will be difficult.

Although a new location for Coup Des Tartes has not been determined, Pacioni says that he intends to maintain the romantic look and feel of his restaurant -- wherever that may be.

A call placed to Amber Smith, real estate contract administrator for the Van Tuyl Group, has not yet been returned.

Pave paradise, put up a parking lot. Real shortage of overflow parking lots in Phoenix.

Ten million vacant lots from Roosevelt to Camelback, and this one is essential to the dealer.

This is sad, and often par for the course in Phoenix, but the bottom line is if Coup Des Tarts doesn't own the land they are on (which is often the case with many restaurants), then this sort of thing can happen.  The owner of the property is free to do with the land as they see fit, subject to city approvals and zoning compliance.  The key here may be to challenge the owner's intent to convert this property into an "overflow parking lot" from within the byzantine zoning and planning mechanisms of the city of Phoenix.  My guess is Camelback Toyota is the specific dealer (and Van Tuyl client) that needs more land to park cars on, and they should have thought about that before building at the former Mel Clayton site on the NW corner of 16th Street and Camelback.

Van Tuyl... If you know anything about this company, you know that the owners are wasting their time with negotiations. This is exactly the kind of company that would bulldoze an independent restaurant and replace it with a parking lot.

Van Tuyl is such a horrible company too! They are the reason buying car is a bad experience. They are very pushy and hound people! My family and friends have all shared experiences with the company and refuse to shop at any of their dealerships. It's sad to hear this news.

It would truly be a shame if someone vandalized every single car that gets parked on that lot.

But look at all of the amazing things that have been done with Long Wong's in Tempe, The old "grassy knoll" on Mill & University, Paper Heart Gallery in Phx, Chez Nous in Phx, Oh I could go on and on...

Point is this group appears to represent a number of Camelback Rd dealers - if you check its website. Putting pressure on the dealer or dealers that benefit from this is a better strategy cuz it damages their brand.

Whatever car dealership built there can count on never having my business and a negative recommendation. Nice PR move.

I live in the complex across the street, and this is a solid bummer on many levels.

It's always about the money, not any established institutions.

a car dealership will bring in more money and pay more in taxes. this is a good thing because we have many poor people and anchor babies to take care of. I dream of a day when poor people from all colors of the diversity rainbow will have their needs taken care of by the US taxpayers. we need money to distribute and french bistros do not pay the bills. I would much rather provide nourishing food, a safe home environment and quality education for the downtrodden and oppressed, confiscated from a successful car dealership, than have rich and fatty foods available to piggish americans with only a fraction of the taxes being collected. we have mouths to feed and work to do, comrades, I hope that everybody will buy a car from this dealership, and do their part to provide a steady money stream to our government apparatus for redistribution in support the needy.
