The Amy's Baking Company Carnival: The Reverend Jarrett Maupin Joins the Sideshow

The Amy's Baking Company shit show is drawing out Phoenix's cast of characters like moths to the flame. It's probably only a matter of time until Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Russell Pearce get involved.

After the ABC Kitchen Nightmares disaster (or could it actually be a blessing in disguise?), Valley PR man Jason Rose announced via press release that his company will be overseeing a "grand re-opening" of the Scottsdale restaurant.

And if that wasn't enough to make your head explode, the Reverend Jarrett Maupin will be emceeing the event, according to recent announcements Rose made on Twitter.

Could we all be the unwitting rubes of a "grand" illusion? Possibly. But we're most definitely witnessing an example of shameless self-promotion by ABC, Jason Rose PR, and Maupin, who's mastered the art of pushing buttons and inserting himself into the local news cycle.

Whether it's storming the Phoenix Mayor's office, his confrontations with Arpaio, or calling out local politicos for racism, Maupin knows how to make headlines.

"I didn't know helping these people out would be national news," claims Maupin, adding that he just got off the phone with the BBC. "Over 1,500 people have tried to get in to the event. This is probably the story of the year."

Maupin says the Bouzaglo's are "great people" even though he hasn't known them "that long." He also admitted that he's never eaten at ABC before.

"Tuesday, I intend to make my mind up if they can cook," he says.

Maupin says he and and Jason Rose are long-time friends, which is part of why he decided to get involved with the ABC fiasco.

"I know they have strong personalities, but they are serious about their business and care about their employees," says Maupin.

Whether or not former ABC employees would agree is up for debate.

"I am willing to lay my name to their efforts," says Maupin. "It's incredible to find an employer in town paying $8 to $14 an hour. They're paying well above what Waffle House is."

How Tuesday's grand re-opening is going to pan out is anyone's guess.

"[Amy's] something else . . . she comes off like she's Gotti's daughter sometimes, and that may be a shock to uppity Scottsdale," says Maupin.

Here's a sampling of Maupin's past shenanigans around town.

The 1,000 people who reserved a seat at the "Re-Opening" should be ashamed of themselves. You are encouraging their bad behavior as well as the terrible treatment of employees and customers. I realize to many it is similar to attending a circus or oddity show, however with their twisted ideals I'm sure they will take it as an affirmation that they are true "chefs".

Traditionally when businesses show unfair practices the public generally boycotts them. They stole the wait staff's tips; isn't that enough to demonstrate the lack of concern for their employees not to mention state laws.

If you do try dining at Amy's you might want to go prepared.

1. Eat a full meal before you go. The wait will be long and the food will be bad.

2. Write down a few phone numbers of people you can call collect because cells phones are not allow in jail.

3. Be sure to have the name of a reputable Bail Bond Agent in case you need to post bail from jail.

4. Hire personal security if you do indeed enter into an altercation with Samy -- remember he IS THE GANGSTA, and "you do not want to F---- with him".

Waffle House lets them keep their tips and if they don't get enough tips to earn $7.80 per hour, Waffle House must make up the difference. So, at worst they pay 20-cents less per hour than ABC. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts they make much more than $8 with their tips. Either Maupin is a fuckin moron or he thinks everyone else is, which still makes him an idiot.

Robin, why? It's still funny, The day of the Media Circus Event [5/21 - MARK THE DAY!] should bring new peaks of hilarity! I'll be very disapponted if it doesn't.

Calling the people of Scottsdale "uppity" and insulting those who would likely be frequenting the restaurant doesn't sound like the best "PR move" to me.

Anyone know where Maupin bought his divinity degree or is it courtesy of an ink jet printer?

Shame on Jarret. He has just about destroyed all his credibility. He was an brilliant young man that had quite a future in politics. He just flushed that down the toilet

Maupin is a clown and a moron

Paying someone $8/hr is 20 cents/hr over minimum wage and the Waffle House has to pay minimum wage or higher.

Waiters may not get *paid* $8 to $14 an hour, but it works out to at least that much even at Applebee's. Tips are for the employees, and the employees alone. http://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/whdfs15.htm

Specifically: "Retention of Tips: A tip is the sole property of the tipped employee regardless of whether the employer takes a tip credit. The FLSA prohibits any arrangement between the employer and the tipped employee whereby any part of the tip received becomes the property of the employer. For example, even where a tipped employee receives at least $7.25 per hour in wages directly from the employer, the employee may not be required to turn over his or her tips to the employer."

Ugh, that thieving bastard.

The Reverend looks like a pimp. I only wish that I could visit Amy's for the grand re-opening.

Hard to beat good theater.

ABC - the gift that just keeps giving. There's an interesting AMA on Reddit with Katie - the server that got fired during the show - in which she's fairly open about her experience at ABC and on the show.

At this "Press Conference," I would love to see the "Chef Amy" demonstrate for the press as to how "she" makes all her great desserts -- made fresh daily -- according to their website. THEN have her multitalented hubby -- internet security expert AND world class photographer -- set up the food photography. After all, and as he said, Amy made that beautiful food, and he shot the "pictures." THEN, people like Martha Stewart and others "stole them."
And to all those who have made reservations for the "Re-Grand Opening" -- HERE'S AN IDEA: When your bill arrives, pay with a credit card, and Note the Tip Line as "Cash Tip" -- total it out....THEN hand your server their tip directly. And sit back and watch Sammy melt down.
