Scratch Pastries to Open Phoenix Location in February; Think French Baguettes, Burgers, and a Bar

If Duc and Noelle Liao have anything to say about it, a little piece of Paris will open on Roosevelt Row in the next couple of weeks.

The ex-Parisian couple's second location of Scratch Pastries, their patisserie and café in Scottsdale, is one of four restaurants slated to move into the once-vacant Canvas building on the northeast corner of Third and Roosevelt Streets (the others are an Italian restaurant, a Vietnamese restaurant, and an ice cream parlor). The Roosevelt Row location will be called Scratch French Cafe.

And the latest Scratch, Noelle Liao tells me, will offer the same favorite dishes of the original location, as well as some new ooh-la-las.

Along with Scratch Pastries' menu of croissants, butter cookies, and French meringues (as well as quiches, rustic sandwiches, and savory crèpes), Liao says she's updated the menu at both locations to include new gourmet burgers featuring bison, beef, and crab. Also, Liao tells me she's lowered the price of Scratch's sandwiches (from $8.25 to $7.25) and will now offer diners their choice of having them made with French country, organic Ezekiel, or French baguette bread.

Like the original location, the interior of Scratch French Cafe will feature white walls with décor touches of black and pink and an open kitchen. But the few things that will set it apart, Liao says, are a bar with 12 craft beers on tap, a large community table, and a separate pastry parlor.

"We had hoped with all our hearts to be open for First Friday this week, but there are still many elements that are not quite in place yet to make that happen," Liao tells me. "So we're shooting for the following Friday [February 8], but many things don't depend on us."
