Will Someone Please Tell Jessica Porter What a MILF Is?

If there were a single reason the world should have ended when the ancient Mayans said it would, it might have been The MILF Diet.

But the world didn't end. And now, as of January 1, The MILF Diet, by Jessica Porter, who also wrote The Hip Chick's Guide to Macrobiotics, has been released so that its title can forever sear itself into our collective consciousness and cause women everywhere to slap their foreheads and exclaim, "What the f---, Jessica?"

Supposedly, The MILF Diet: Let the Power of Whole Foods Transform Your Body, Mind and Spirit Deliciously!, is Porter's answer to unleashing "your inner MILF" by eating whole, plant-based foods.

Think it can't get much creepier than the title? Oh, but it can.

According to Chow Bella's sister blog at L.A. Weekly, Squid Ink,, Porter thanks "My stepmother, Anna, a MILF and loving mentor" in the acknowledgements (ew!), divides the book into phases of "MILFification," and even boasts a chapter on MILF sex that states "a true MILF is sexy in a deep and powerful way. Because she eats whole and balanced foods, she is whole, and her chi runs through her unimpeded." Ugh.

With recipes such as Lemony Quinoa Salad; Oven-Roasted Root Vegetables with Garlic, Cumin, and Herbs; and Poached Pears with Raspberry Sauce, it's hard to see The MILF Diet as anything more than a health food cookbook with a hippie slant attempting to capitalize on a slang-y label Porter seems to understand very little.

For starters, it's a vulgar, misogynistic acronym that's rarely, if at all, used by women (her book's customer). And please, Jessica, women need another book telling them they need the approval of someone else to validate their bodies like they need more old men in Congress denying them free birth control.

I'm of the EWBGY (Eat Well and Be Good to Yourself) mindset. And if Jessica Porter wants to use that as her next cookbook title, she's more than welcome to it.

There is nothing wrong with the term MILF, stop being so damn prudish.  Humans have been copulating since our beginning and most of the best sex I have ever had has been with MILFs.  Wake up already, its 2013!

You know, I was sort of contemplating getting this book, but after reading your review, I so want a copy now.  Not only that, I would love for Jessica Porter to sign it.  Thanks for helping me decide what to do with my Chapters gift card Laura!  Thanks for coming out of blog retirement to post this!

Someone Tell Laura to get off her PC trip. I know plenty of awesome, liberated, activist-minded people that use the term. Its context, Laura. I agree, a silly book, but certainly not as ridiculous as this blog suggests it is.

She is using the term in a "let's take the word back" spirit ...  it seems like you didn't actually read the book.

The part where you were trying to tell Jessica Porter about "eating well and being good to yourself" like you're turning her on to something new was laughable -- she's a natural health icon.

How about being good to others, too?  Kind of a bitter review, and really off base....came off as mean spirited.

Better luck next time!

I have this book -- just got it from Amazon -- and I couldn't disagree more with your assessment. I'd call what you wrote a review, but I think that in order to review a book, you have to read it first, which you admittedly didn't.

The whole point of this book is that women DON'T need someone else's approval to validate their bodies. It's about redefining & claiming the word MILF on women's terms, challenging the idea that women's sexuality disappears when we become mothers, and showing people a way of eating that supports looking & feeling great well past the age when our culture tells us we're no longer sexy.

Though I am a cougar(I gather I will get flack for this terminology as well here), I once overheard my neighbour's teenage son refer to me when questioned who I was by his teenage friend that "yes, she's a total MILF"...At the time (& this was a long long time ago) I didn't know what they meant...I asked my husband...He told me...Though I am actually not a mother, I felt it was a compliment...The intention behind the word should be appreciated...It, of course , is not meant to be a literal phrase...If this book helps mothers to feel a little sexier about themselves then that is a good & needed thing...I'd like to see more older women in film & television too, ones with children, who maybe have that little belly & some stretch marks...This will help the Shirley Valentine's out there...It is not good to be offended...

Hi Laura,

It seems that you didn't get a chance to read the book yourself.  I think it's important that fair criticism comes from an informed source... because I wrote The MILF Diet.  Can I send you a copy?

Take care,

Jessica Porter

Ummmmm. . .  I think she knows exactly what it is.  That's the point.  Women well into their 50's and 60's, if they are taking good care of themselves inside and out are just as radiant, if not MORE SO. . .  and absolutely MILF's.  And in addition to that have the wisdom and power of their experience to add to boot!  It's not about dying, it's about being in all her absolute glory!

This might be the most disgusting thing I've ever read, ever, in the history of words used by humans to express thoughts and ideas: "...she is whole, and her chi runs through her unimpeded."

@Jason Patrick Woodbury That's cause you're ignorant of the meaning of Chi!

@Nancy Heimstra I cook vegetarian almost entirely but yesterday I cooked collard greens the traditional way - with ham hocks - and it was friggin awesome.  I'm going to apply the principles in this book to make the dish in a healthy way with alternatives to the meat.  I'm guessing I can get pretty close to the taste and texture of the ham hocks.
