Dick's Hideaway: Happy Hour Report Card
The Spot: Dick's Hideaway, 6008 North Sixteenth Street Phoenix, 602-265-5886, http://www.burningembersphoenix.com/.

The Hours: Happy Hour is offered daily from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m.
The Interior: Think of Dick's as the rebellious child of Richardson's and the Rokerij. The sliver of a bar has room for only a lucky few, which is prime real estate during the happy hours. The chunky natural wood and metal furnishings are both hip and classic looking. Seating is pretty much exclusively on stools at the bar or small two-person booths, which isn't the most comfy or conducive to balance after a few glasses of wine, but the food and drink make all of the uncomfortable buns worth while.

The Food: It's hard to resist ordering every $5 small plate on the happy hour menu, but there's only so much stomach room so you have to choose. With tasty New Mexican tacos, rellenos, chipotle ribs and green chile cheese sliders being only some of the options, it's definitely a food lovers happy hour. After much prying from our server, we started with some mini adovada flautas. The embarrassingly, yet impressively crunchy outer shell surrounding the adovada marinated carne would seem like a super naughty choice, but the small salad with roasted salsa that serves as a bed for the flautas balances it all out really nicely.
We never said we were looking for balance though and we never meant to keep our resolutions, so we went in for round two. At our server's recommendation we opted for the sinfully smothered jalapenos. When they said smothered, we assumed covered in sauce, which they were. What we didn't expect was for them to be wrapped in smoky bacon and filled with cream cheese. This super spicy small plate, combined with a firey bloody mary, will burn any hangover you had outta you (definitely a good thing to keep in mind Saturdays around 2:30 p.m.).

The Drink: It's always exciting to go to a happy hour that isn't entirely beer-centric. Dick's offers $5 glasses of wine, bellinis, mimosas and spicy bloody marys. First off we got a mimosa, which was straightforward and heavy on the champagne--just like we like it. However, it also featured fresh-squeezed OJ, which is a definite plus.
With our thirst not quite quenched, we also got a spicy bloody mary. The mouth-burning wake up call comes with celery, pickled asparagus, lime and a shot of beer. We're big fans of the beer chaser with bloody marys so we pretty much wouldn't change anything about Dick's take on the brunch classic.
The Conclusion: Great food and tasty drinks can almost make us forget the not super comfy seating--almost. We dig the rock'n'roll vibe of the little bar and the brunch-inspired drink list. All in all, a hot spot to happy hour with a friend or two (but not too many friends because there's not much room).
