Don't Want To Spend Thanksgiving Day in the Kitchen? Where to Buy Ready-Made Dishes for Turkey Day
Don't you love Thanksgiving? It's a nationally sanctioned food marathon, and we're all encouraged to be athletes. No silly talk of calories, carbs or the evils of sugar on this one guilt-free day. Of course, for the person(s) preparing this misty watercolor rendition of a Norman Rockwell painting, the day (which actually began the night before, and maybe the day before that) is often long and stressful.
What's a lazy cook to do? Get invited to somebody else's house. But what are the options for people who'd simply like to enjoy Thanksgiving at home without being chained to the stove? Take out, my stuffing-stuffing friends. That's the answer. Here are a handful of places to lighten your T-Day load. Give thanks.
Love smoked turkey but hate doing the smoking? Bobby Q sells 12 to 15-pound, spice-rubbed, hickory-smoked turkeys a la carte for $40. Add on a quart of mashed potatoes, a quart of fire-roasted corn, a pint of gravy and eight cornbreads for $60.
Available by special order only, to be picked up on Wednesday, November 21: smoked walnut stuffing and smoked turkey gravy, each priced at $6 per quart.
Orders require 72 hours advanced notice; turkeys available for pick-up November 18-21. Call 602-995-5982.
St. Francis makes beautiful seasonal soups, and right now, the go-to potage is silky pumpkin (made with local butternut squash and sugar pumpkins), garnished with croutons, pomegranate seeds and creme fraiche. A $12 quart feeds four, and you can pick up a loaf of crusty, wood-burning oven-baked bread while you're at it for $3.
