Well, this is sad news. Very sad news indeed.

Zaidi's Grill, the unassuming eatery of exceptional Pakistani food in Scottsdale, has shuttered.

Featuring classic dishes made from family recipes and memories of meals in their hometown of Karachi, Syed and Tabassum Zaidi, the restaurant's owners and chefs, called their authentic culinary style "cooking from the grass roots." And their dishes -- well-seasoned grilled meats, curries nearly tripping over themselves with flavor, and a few veggie selections -- were nothing short of stellar. In fact, I had said in my review of Zaidi's that the rugged and intense chicken qorma was destined to become famous.

No more.

Syed and Tabassum, who have been married for 32 years, opened Zaidi's Grill around last November. They quit their corporate gigs and continued to run their part-time catering business in addition to working in the restaurant. The two did most of the work, sharing both front and back of the house duties.

The news of the closing of Zaidi's Grill come on the heels of another praiseworthy restaurant shuttering late last month: Contigo Peru in Mesa.
