Two Restaurant Closings on Camelback

Two casualties to report on Camelback Road in the form of restaurant shutterings.

The first, at 1575 East Camelback Road at the southwest corner of 16th Street and Camelback Road in Central Phoenix, was once the home of Fuji Buffet. In April, the space was split into two restaurants: Mediterranean Buffet on one side and Soxan on the other. (Soxan was added after Mediterranean Buffet, but unlike the first restaurant, never opened.).

Signs on the doors indicate the owners of the restaurants were locked out by the landlord in August.

The second closing, sadly, means one less option for Cuban cuisine in the Valley.

One of my favorite places for ropa vieja and a solid Cuban sandwich, Sabor Cubano, the family-owned restaurant of Cuban eats located at 2030 West Camelback Road in Central Phoenix, has shuttered.

Owned by Nancy Socarras and her husband, Eduardo Carralero, Sabor Cubano opened in December of 2007 and was known for its affordable plates of Cuban comfort food.

A note on the door from Maricopa Country indicates the restaurant was shuttered on October 10th.

There is, Laura, a new wonderful Cuban Restaurant ( and bakery) in the West Valley. Excellent food - as a cuban born, raised in Jersey boy would know! Inexpensive. One of the owners was a pastry chef in Cuba before coming to Arizona. They bake not only their own Cuban bread but wonderful Cuban Pastries. Cuban pastries are european style like you find in Paris or Vienna. Prices are cheep and the food plentiful. Me and my boyfriend go all the time. Cuban Foods Bakery & Restaurant- they are on Facebook.

In other news, Albertsons has a sale on cantelope, and in the west valley an old lady thinks about crossing the street but decides not to.
