From now 'til we publish the 2012 edition of Best of Phoenix, New Times and Chow Bella present 100 Tastemakers -- Valley residents who make the cut in our culinary scene. Some you'll know; for others, it'll be a first introduction (but likely not the last). While you're here, check out our 100 Creatives on Jackalope Ranch.

Today: A man on the move.

Born in 1962 to the Reverend John and Mildred Brown in Bellport, Long Island, where hunting and cooking went hand in hand, Michael J. Brown learned the art of cooking. At age 14 he got his first job as a dishwasher and short order cook at Colonial II Restaurant in Plainfield, New Jersey to help his family out with the bills. He remembers the day when his mother first saw him working was the day an angel of God spoke to him and said, "You will one day own a restaurant of your own." He now owns and operates Jamburritos Cajun Grille Express.

I arrived in Phoenix with... my wife, Adrienne Brown, and my daughter, Jasmine Brown, and the hope of opening a restaurant in the Valley of the Sun.

If I was sitting down to dinner for six, my five dream dining companions would be... Adrienne Brown, Paul Prudhomme, Julia Child, President Barack and First Lady Michelle Obama.

One place everyone who comes to Phoenix must eat is... Jamburritos Cajun Grille Express.

One menu item this city could do without is... gnocchi.

My last meal in Phoenix would be... roast ducking Cajun style with wild rice, oven-roasted vegetables, pan-fired sweet breads as an appetizer, and crème brulee.

My Voice Nation Help

I'm sure this guy's really nice and all, but owning a completely unremarkable food truck is all it takes to make him a Tastemaker?  Seems like a pretty low bar.  What's next, a person with several Subway franchises?

@guest He had restaurants back East and he knows exactly what he 's doing and his food is beyond amazing so YES it makes him a tastemaker! Maybe you should try it sometime.
