As far as snack foods go, popcorn is up there in terms of simplicity of production and ease of consumption. But this is the 21st century right? Surely science and engineering have something to offer us beyond picking up our food with our hands like an animal.

That something is The Popinator, a fully automated popcorn dispensing machine that solves the problem of having to engage your prehensile thumbs simply to shovel snackage into your face. Using some fairly complex programming, this device is able to listen for the command word "pop," triangulate the location and distance of the mouth making the sound and fling a piece of popcorn in that direction.

We have attempted to contact Popcorn Indiana and assertain if this device will ever see mass production. Given the quality of the device featured in the videos we can only imagine that it would not be too much of a stretch to see them build a production model. Perhaps we should expect a Kickstarter campaign in the near future? If the Bug-A-Salt guy could get funded, surely this can become a reality too.

We can only hope that when this device goes on sale the fine folks at Heatsync Labs will hack one of these apart and make a more offensively minded one. Bombarding overly talkative children or keeping the cat/dog entertained seem like perfect uses for this technology.
