On Friday, June 29, Peter Kasperski, owner of Cowboy Ciao in Old Town Scottsdale, filed Chapter 11 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court, District of Arizona. According to records, he owes $1.1 million to the Arizona Department of Revenue and $500,000 to the IRS. He also owes $298,000 to MidFirst Bank, $219,000 to the Scottsdale Canal Project, $10,271 to Nicola Imports, and $9,513 to Southern Wine & Spirits.

Word on the street is that Southern has stopped supplying Cowboy Ciao with alcoholic beverages until the debt has been paid. A representative of Southern says he cannot confirm this information.

Kasperski owes just under $1.5 million to private parties, including members of his family.

The restaurant is currently closed but scheduled to re-open on Thursday, July 5.

In a phone call with Chow Bella, Kasperski says he closed the restaurant this week because it's the slowest week of the year. When he was asked about the bankruptcy, he affirmed that Cowboy Ciao is reorganizing adding that the down time is being used to clean the restaurant and take care of maintenance issues.

Man, what a tough crowd! I have frequented CC and Kaz tons of times over the years and consider them Scottsdale staples. If only to maintain these two establishments, I wish Peter the best.

I lived it. I experienced it and all I can say is, the Guy is a schmuck, coward, and classless. For him to continue to treat his employees with disrespect and disregarding their needs is shameless. For him (Peter), feeding his ego, pride, and trying to save his now diluting legacy, is more important to him than paying taxes. He surrounded himself with under qualified, unmotivated, selfless people who stood there and were selfish and fid nothing. CC and Peter do no longer deserve to be open.

Jensizzle, nice comments. I like how you said burning bridges and his buddy Dick came to the rescue. Burn baby burn. The guy is a degenerate, drinking all the time.  no car. has to walk to work.  How many DUI has this guy had? 2-3? Tent City?  Vikki watching the place while he was away.

Vikki, how much are you owed?  Or Do YOU owe?

It's not hard if you don't drive ppl away& dont drink all of your most expensive product, & at least try to pay taxes once in a while. He is a good guy but he kept making unsound business decisions & burning bridges & ignoring friends warnings.

I dont think MOST restaurants have a cadre of investors as you stated, only a few ego driven restauranteurs would take multiple investors in to expand, he should have stayed with just the Cowboy Ciao, and not expanded to soooooo many different ventures.. the risk is great and failure risk is extremely high, the statistics have proven that correct.. now he has filed bankruptcy, sometimes restaurant owners are their own worst enemy..

Caffe Boa in Tempe owner, but not the ahwatukee location(different owner), Jay Wisniewski filed personal bankruptcy too last month, similar way, listed Caffe Boa as a creditor though.., which assume he avoids paying certain debts, but not all debts like taxes to state and federal.. both restaurants tried to expand and failed, that was the downfall, period.

David.  What has this guy done?  Total creep. Closed the door and left people hanging. Shame on him for not paying taxes!  You pay yours and his taxes.  LOCK HIM UP!

Foodiegirl who owes you money?  you make a comment about the money owed to vendors being relatively small. bold statement.  Id like to see how you would react to someone owing you thousands.  If its small money then pass some over.

Thanks for the insight, Foodiegirl. I think most of us are saddened by this and wish Peter the best. I have many, many good memories of meals and wine at Cowboy Ciao.

I like how everyone is judging him when no one knows the true story. And Vikki doesn't watch shit.  She is part of the main problem.  She should have never been in the position she was because she has no business sense at all and hid everything from him.

Your second question is the right question to ask Ottis.  How much does she owe?
