Here's a Sneak Peek at the Menus for the New Del Frisco's Grille, Opening June 9 in the Esplanade

In what appears to be a start in filling the restaurant void at the Camelback Esplanade, the mixed-use development on the southeast corner of Camelback Road and 24th Street, Del Frisco's Grille will be opening in the former Houston's location on Saturday, June 9.

From the Dallas-based Del Frisco's Restaurant Group, a high-end steakhouse chain, Del Frisco's Grille promises to "take the classic bar and grill to new heights, proving that it's not necessary to spend a fortune to have a great meal." The Esplanade will be the the third location of Del Frisco's Grille (the other two are in Dallas and Manhattan, with two more planned for Atlanta and Washington, D.C.)

So how does Del Frisco's plan to differentiate itself from the competition -- namely, its former tenant, Houston's, part of the Hillstone Restaurant Group, who moved out of the Esplanade last year and successfully reopened just down the street as a Hillstone property?

In addition to its renovated space, which includes a rooftop patio and bar, Del Frisco's Grille will carry an extensive wine list with more than 400 selections, as well as on-staff sommeliers.

In addition, the restaurant will offer a menu mix of steaks, seafood, and twists on American comfort cuisine. Dishes include Del Frisco's signature Jumbo Lump Crab Cake as well as pimento cheese fritters, prime beef short rib stroganoff, veal meatloaf, and chipotle three-cheese mac.

Went to a "soft opening" on Tuesday for lunch.  It was FREE - so What The Heck.  The space is lighter and brighter than it was as "Houston's", but just as loud and non-conducive to conversation.  Maybe that was because they had every single staff member there, or maybe because there is no privacy between tables...  it was loud.  At my table for 4, we had a hard time talking.  Some of the food was great.  Some, not so much.  I had the filet mignon.  It was wonderful and prepared just as I had ordered.  It would have been better with the mashed potato, but it was only offered with fries for the soft opening.  The fries were "ho-hum".  We had the black eyed pea humus which was OK, - not great - too much cumin - but ok.  A nice surprise was the pickled veggies that came with the humus.  Those were tasty.  Another member of my party ordered the Rock Shrimp Tacos.  He thought they were great.  He shared with "The Boss", who is himself something of a gourmet chef, who thought they were "ok" but nothing earth-shattering.  We had the chicken and pesto flat bread, which was Wonderful.  All 4 of us agreed on that.  They served some "signature drinks" as well... one called "The Remedy" which was a tasty coconut flavored vodka concoction that was really good, but at $10...  My gourmet chef boss had the veal meat loaf and he did NOT like it at all.  Another co-worker had the Asian Ahui Tuna salad, which she has had in MANY restaurants, and said that this was her least favorite...  So, some menu items are wonderful, some not so much. Bottom line: we were grateful for the chance to have a "free" lunch at Del Frisco.  Our tab for 4, with 2 alcohol beverages each (5 mixed drinks, 3 glasses of wine) plus 2 apps, 4 entrees, and 3 sides ...  the bill would have been $218 plus tax plus tip.   Will they make it?  You tell me...

Hmmmm.  I must admit, I'm a bit disappointed.   I was hoping to see a lunch menu that would cater a bit more to the local employees who can't afford $20 for lunch, a better selection of entree salads, more small plates, more chicken options, and some affordable deals.  McCormick and Schmick used to do a "10 Under $10" on their lunch menu, which is SORELY missed by area Nine to Fivers, as are Deemo's daily specials.

I hope the owner/manager takes a look at the week-day potential and comes up with some way to bring in the local workers who want a budget-friendly option. And really, does the area need ANOTHER high end steak place for dinner?  Even though Morton's closed, there is still Ruth Chris, Capital Grill and Donovan's within a few blocks.  Add up the ala carte nice steak dinner of a filet mignon with sauteed mushrooms, steamed broccoli and garlic mashed potatoes, you come up with almost $70, before beverage(s), tax and tip.Step it up Del Frisco - do something to set yourself apart from all of the other "grills" in the area!

There's no reason to be disappointed, Mike B.  The concept is Del Frisco's GRILLE, and not the Double Eagle Steakhouse concept that is located in Colorado.  I highly urge you to venture in as you will not be disappointed with the food, hospitality, and ambiance.
