America's Taco Shop: Happy Hour Report Card

americashappyhour5.jpg
Chips and Salsa are just $1 from 2 to 6 p.m. every weekday at America's Taco Shop.

The Spot: America's Taco Shop, 735 E. University Drive, Tempe, AZ 85281. (480) 751-6250. (Two more locations in downtown Phoenix) www.americastacoshop.net

The Hours: 2 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday

The Details: Tacos Al Pastor (with marinated pork, cabbage, guacamole, cilantro, and grilled pineapple, served with tomatillo salsa) are just $1 a piece. Chips & Salsa are also a steal at $1, while all Mexican bottled beer is down to $2. The selection includes Dos Equis, Negra Modelo, and Tecate (a beer you can also find at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, at Phantom Ranch -- that's a fun fact). The America's Margarita is discounted at just $4, and you can get it with either salt or sugar. The happy hour doesn't extend beyond weekdays, but to cheer you up on Saturdays and Sundays, you can get Pacificos for just $2 all day.

These Al Pastor tacos - with sweet grilled pineapple and spicy tomatillo salsa - are just $1 a piece during happy hour.

The Interior: Inside, America's Taco Shop is casual and unpretentious: like your dorm room, but uncluttered and clean. You order at the registers and take a number; pop this on your table and your tacos and drinks will soon be delivered. Service is fast and friendly, and when we went up to order, we experienced one of those things that makes us really believe in a place: We were reminded that it was happy hour and encouraged to order the discounted items. Too many restaurants hide their happy hours or appear to hope you don't ask, but here, even when the regular menu prices are already so reasonable, the staff was eager to give us the best deal available. And when the weather is fine, the patio space overlooking University Drive on one side and the light rail on the other (decorated with twinkling lights for when the sun sets) is an ideal spot to kick back and take a break (like, say, during finals week).

Pineapple in a pork taco??  Maybe they should change the name to France's Taco Shop, I mean am I right?

we go to the one on 7th street all the time and ive never felt ripped off...the only time it even gets pricey is when my lady orders the Quatro without telling me. eh, i know how it is though. ive been to some 'local favorites' and had a bad experience only to try again later and find out it was isolated

Did an ASU student write this piece?  Yikes.

We paid $ 6.00 for a steak burrito that consisted of a large flour tortilla and the tiniest amount of meat. No beans, rice, or even salsa.  It's a rip off and I can't understand why "gueros" (white people) love this place so much. Drive to L.A. or mexico and get some real mexican food and stop being ripped off. Worst thing is... it's now a franchise ! They SUCK.

When I went there everything was over priced and under seasoned. There were 3 of us and we spent $30.00 and left hungry. That was with no alcohol. $1.50 for a can of soda???

Al pastor pork is a schwarma-style, spit-grilled hunk of pork rubbed with achiote and marinated in pineapple and other juices. It's authentic, I assure you. Whether you like it or not is another matter.

Thank you very much for googling "Al Pastor" for me.  It is people like you who take time from your busy day to help others that gives me hope for our society to continue to survive and evolve!

While I have read over your heartfelt argument many times to get to the root of what you have to say, I was almost swayed over to your way of thinking, but I just can't get there.  Thanks for the fantastic back and forth though!
