Tuck Shop Owner to Open Breakfast Spot Amidst the Chains at 7th Ave and McDowell

Note: This post was edited from its original version to reflect the correct name of How Do You Roll? sushi.

In places like Australia and England, folks use the term "tuck shop" to refer to a small shop selling sweets and crisps (that's cookies and potato chips to us). Tuck means food -- as in, "to tuck into a meal."

But in the case of Phoenix's Tuck Shop, the term also means tucked into a small, residential neighborhood in central Phoenix, with an all-but-impossible-to-read sign made of worn out old kid blocks, so off the beaten restaurant path that when you find this treasure, you truly feel special -- and that's even before you try the food (which is awesome).

Ditto for architect/restauranteur DJ Fernandes' next venture, Astor House, a little food shop opening next month next door to the Tuck Shop.

But after that, according to Tuck Shop's general manager, Fernandes has plans for a much more public space:
The southeast corner of McDowell Road and 7th Avenue.

For years, the space in that intersection was occupied mainly by antique malls and the now-defunct My Florist Cafe. Then came a Pei Wei and a Starbucks (and, to be fair, the awesome SideBar) and more recently, a slew of chains -- including Chipotle and How Do You Roll sushi.

But John Cavanagh, Tuck Shop's general manager, tells Chow Bella that Fernandes will be opening a restaurant sometime after Astor House is complete.

Another Tuck Shop?! (We got excited.)

No, this will be breakfast-only, named for Fernandes' grandmother: Vovomeena.

We can't wait.

Minor correction: It's How Do You Roll? Sushi, not On a Roll Sushi. Regardless, this is swell news!
