Looks like something cool is about to happen on Mill Avenue in Tempe.

Former San Franciscans and ex-corporate types Tina Chau and Sam Chang moved to the Valley a little over two months ago when, after a cross-country location-hunting excursion, they selected Tempe to be the home of their first ice cream dream.

Called Slickables Ice Cream Sandwich, the small cafe is located at 699 South Mill Avenue (in The Brickyard on Mill) and will specialize in the frozen confection, offering customers their choice of two homemade cookies with a scoop of any one of twelve flavors of Dreyer's ice cream, for -- get this -- two flippin' dollars.

Chau, who bakes the cookies, tells me folks can also purchase the ice cream or cookies separately. She hopes to have Slickables ready to go by Monday, December 26.

Kudos to any one starting a business in this economy. And at 2 bucks, I'm not gonna complain.

Umm...this is not a new concept.  There is already a place JUST LIKE IT on Mill.  It's called Cookiez.  Try it out!

Why Dreyer's?  They have an "ice cream dream", and it involves mass market grocery store stuff?

The name sounds like something you'd buy at an adult bookstore.

At $2 they are going to have to rely on serious volume sales. It works for Diddy Reese in Westwood, Ca with a line out the door most nights. Dunno if that same concept and model (they're after the college crowd) will work here.

Am I the only one who loves Cookiez?

Awesome.  Where can you find dessert for $2? Count me in.  Cookiez was always overpriced stale cookies.

Did Cookiez on Mill close? It seems weird to embark on a "cross-country location-hunting excursion" and open up shop less than a block from another ice cream sandwich shop...but who knows.

Cookiez is still plugging along, right downstairs from me as I type this.

As of now, Mill Avenue has:

2 frozen yogurt places2 ice cream cookie sandwich places (once this one opens)and two other ice cream places: Sparky's Creamery and Paletas Betty.

Not sure a 1/2 mile of road needs six ice cream shops, but then, Mill Avenue has:

6 Mexican Places:Chipotle, Chronic, Restaurant Mexico, Hippies Cove, Fuzzy's Tacos, Canteen

3 Pizza Places:Slices, La Bocca, Mellow Mushroom

5 Burger Places: (though this requires stretching out to Forest/Myrtle)Five Guys, Fatburger, Smashburger, Chuckbox, Jack-in-the-Box

2 Irish Pubs:Rula Bula & Robbie Fox's

4 Mediterranean Places:Big Fat Greek, Munchie's, Med Fresh, Crave (sorta)

The fact that this concept is nearly identical is just nutty, but Cookiez is literally ADJACENT to Sparky's and it's still here. I don't really get it, personally.

Don't forget sandwich shops: Quiznos, Subway, Capriottis, Jimmy Johns, Sacks, and Corleones, Silver Mine

Hot dog: Thirsty Dog, Cutie's, Daves Doghouse
