Tacos may very well be the perfect food, but let's face it, the standard Meximerican fare can get a bit stale after a while. Taco the Town is here to highlight some of the more unusual Mexican finds in the Valley.

The caramelo is truly an Arizona treat. Ask most Mexican taquerias for a caramelo are they're likely to give you an odd look and try to offer some sort of sugary dulce. But in Tucson, home of the caramelo, just about every other taqueria boasts these crispy tortilla sandwiches stuffed with meat and cheese. Not as many taquerias here in the valley offer such a crispy concoction, but at Mickey's Hot Dogs in Mesa, warm caramelos can be yours for just about a handful of change. Two tortillas, cheese, and meat grilled to gooey perfection.

Everything is pretty cheap at Mickey's, so we recommend you take the sampler platter route to crafting a meal. Snag a couple caramelos, a taco or two, and a Sonoran hot dog for good measure. If you opt for a bacon wrapped hot dog, you'll get a ticket and bring it to the hot dog lady outside. Your caramelos and other tasty offerings will be prepared at the grill inside. And don't feel weird about reaching behind the counter for some mini salsa cups.
The caramelo's tortillas are crispy and well buttered, stuffed with well-seasoned chopped carne asada and lots, and lots, of melty white queso. If you like quesadillas, you will like their unfolded brethren, the caramelo. Although they're just as good solo, a bit of salsa never hurts. Add some pico de gallo or pickled red onions inside the caramelo, and drizzle a bit of avocado or red sauce on top. Caramelos never tasted so good.
Bring a bit of México to your kitchen: Heat a pan. Butter two tortillas. Slap some carne and cheese in between those two tortillas and lay it butter side down in the pan. In mere minutes you have an ooey, gooey, warm and toasty tortilla treat. Enjoy!
