Dominic Armato: What I Did on My Summer Vacation

Fall is officially in the air -- so since a couple more foodie summer vacation reports fell from the sky, we figured we'd share. Today: Dominc Armato, who blogs his heart out at skilletdoux.com.

Where I went: Big sky country... Marfa, West Texas. Population 1,981, former railroad water stop turned art community, shooting location for Giant and home of the mysterious Marfa lights.

What I saw: Not the Marfa lights! But I did see the wedding of a dear friend (hers was the Elvis side, his was the Johnny Cash side), presided over by a minister dressed like the cover of 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong, who concluded the ceremony by saying, "By the power vested in my by God, The King, and the state of Texas, I now pronounce you husband and wife."

No peanut butter and banana sandwiches for Armato -- find out what he ate after the jump.

What I ate: Some pretty mean Tex-Mex enchiladas at L&J Cafe in El Paso on the way, and in Marfa proper, an absolutely killer grilled cheese at the Museum of Electronic Wonders and Late Night Grilled Cheese Parlour. Dubbed the Rehab, it was essentially a reuben except that it was 90% cheese, with just a thin layer of salty corned beef and just a tiny bit of vinegary punch from the almost symbolic amount of sauerkraut. Killer sandwich.

The best part of coming home:
Grabbing some BBQ on the way back! Got some very respectable brisket from Rudy's Country Store and Bar-B-Q... a kitschy chain, but the meat's solid. No substitute for a proper tour of Texas BBQ pits, but we could have done a lot worse for such a short, busy trip.

Plans for the fall: Looking to get down and dirty with some dives on McDowell. I picked an intersection, a direction, and I'm planning on hitting every place that serves food along the way until this time next year, or I hit Central... whichever comes first. And a three week trip back home to Chicago can't get here soon enough. We'll see if my blood's thinned out already.
