Soi 4 Bankok Eatery: Happy Hour Report Card

The Hours: 5 - 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
The Details: Soi 4 is a Thai word meaning "side streets" or "alley ways" and their "happier hours" gives us a choise of six $5 "street snacks" meant to represent Thailand street vendor cuisine, such as fried calamari, green curry vegie roti, crispy vegetable spring rolls, sweet-chili glazed pork ribs, shrimp and pork dumplings and fried taro + tofu.
For booze, Soi offers $3 draft beer and all of their twelve signature cocktails for only $6, many of which use a house infused ginger citron vodka that is a perfectly light accompaniment to their flavorful deep fried appetizers.

The place was pretty empty on a Wednesday at 6 p.m. but got a later rush of an eclectic mix of patrons.

The Conclusion: Soi 4 creates a happy and beautiful environment for their Americanized Thai fare. Though we adore the "street snack" prices, some of the options underwhelmed by lacking the kind of spicy sweet balance we expect from Thai cuisine. While we ordered the fried calamari, we were disappointed by the overly sweet dipping sauce of the veggie spring rolls and sweet chili- glazed pork ribs were all bone and no meat.
However, the long list of inventive cocktails (we fell in love with their Mango Cosmo--Ketel Nne, mango nectar and orange liqueur), scores big.
Overall Grade: B-
