The NRA (not that NRA), the National Restaurant Association, is rolling out a new initiative to encourage restaurants to offer something different from cheezburgers, grilled cheeze, nugget shapes, fried potatoes and a "juice" on kids' menus. It's called "Kids EatWell." The focus is on "increasing consumption of fruit and vegetables, lean protein, whole grains and low-fat dairy, and limiting unhealthy fats, sugars and sodium."
Instead of always having to pack your purses with those items from home, you can actually order them on the menu. Taking the toys from the wacky meals doesn't seem to make as much sense as actually offering real food on the menu. We're a far cry from eating like the kids in France, but at least we're doing something. Oh, and they're also limiting the entire caloric intake for the meal to 600 calories. It's a challenge to get kids meals under 600 calories? Yikes.

One of the first of the 19 restaurants participating is Zpizza. There are over 90 locations nationwide, but we have a few here in the Valley (we're down to 3 right now). We think they've been offering many of the items already, but this is a way to showcase their "crazy" business model of actual ingredients like "certified organic tomato sauce, MSG-free pepperoni, additive-free sausage, and fresh produce." They even prepare much of their own food like their "dough is made from 100% organic wheat flour prepared fresh every day."

Here are the menu choices for the kids meals that meet the Kids LiveWell criteria:

It's nice to know that when we're out on our road trip to cooler weather, we're not completely SOL when it comes to better options for our kiddos when we make those pit stops on the way. With this program, you don't have to count calories, you can just order the meal, knowing it fits a more healthful criteria than what we're used to. Here's a link to the entire list of participating restaurants.
