Vegans Can Cook with Marijuana: Cannabis-Infused Oil

​Now that you have the recipe for canna butter (if you don't have it, there's a link at the end of this post), there's no end to what you can make with it. You don't need to stop at brownies and caramel corn. You can venture into the savory.

(Just be sure that when you saute with canna butter, you cut it with regular unsalted butter; heat the canna butter past 350 degrees and you'll cook out the THC.)

What, you're vegan? No worries. You can also infuse your favorite oil with cannabis.

I recommend an oil with a HIGH smoke point: we will not be ever getting the oil that hot, but it's best to use one of these three types which give a really good range of flavor: olive oil, sesame oil or grapeseed oil. Don't skimp; buy your favorite oil and make it a good one. (Not like the Safeway one pictured here!)

Cannabis-Infused Oil

You will need:
2 cups  of oil
an ounce to a half ounce of of medicinal quality marijuana (depending on potency you want)

In a large heavy saucepan, heat the oil over MEDIUM heat until hot but not boiling. (it must NOT boil at any time.) 

Lower the heat to keep it at a steady temperature. If you have a thermometer, now would be a great time to whip it out and make sure you aren't overheating the oil. Remember too hot and you will kiss all the THC goodbye.

Shake, grind or crumble the marijuana into the pan of oil.

Maintain the steady temperature for 2 hours. Keep a close eye on it for the first half hour or so, stirring every 10 minutes.

If at ANY time, the mixture begins to boil or even get NEAR a boil, remove it from the heat immediately and let it cool down a bit and reduce the heat slightly.

 After a while the oil may turn a bit green or brown due to the resin extracts.

At the 2 hour mark, remove the pan from the heat and let it cool for about a half hour. Strain through a fine mesh sieve several times to get all the pieces of  plant material out and you are well on your way to making some FAAABULOUS bruschetta, stir fry vegetables, or any other recipe that calls for or could benefit from either a drizzle or mix it with some "plain jane" oil to cut the potency. 

 You can store the oil in a clean jar or even in the original bottle; dark colored bottles are best, just make sure you label it so there's no accidental ingestion. Make especially sure to keep it a dark cupboard, as light will lower the potency significantly. When you want to use the oil, just make sure to give it a good shake first.

There are a few things to keep in mind regarding dosages. The degree to which an individual is affected has many variables; including body weight, quality of the marijuana used, the way that the food has been prepared, a person's metabolism, state of mind and experience with cannabis use.

Remember, there are no documented cases of overdosing on marijuana, but too much can make someone unfamiliar with its effects uncomfortable or they may need to lie down for a while, so please start with small doses.

Avocado oil has a really high smoke point also, and is HIGH in omega-3 fatty acids.
