Cafe Du Monde's Coffee & Chicory

We love trying new coffees and energy drinks around town, but sometimes, we want to brew our own java, and the most popular brands of coffee don't really float our boats. It wasn't until we picked up a can of Cafe Du Monde Coffee & Chicory that we truly fell in love. Making a cup of this savory beverage at home is the next best thing to visiting Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans and sipping it from the source (now, if they could just mass market their baguettes, life would be swell).

Coffee was first brought to New Orleans from France in the mid-1700s. There was a coffee shortage during the Civil War, so the French started adding chicory to their coffee. The chicory adds body and flavor, and makes for a unique caffeinated beverage.

Cafe Du Monde Coffee & Chicory smells like dirt, but tastes like heaven. There's a subtle bitterness to it, but the flavor's surprisingly smooth. Chicory is the root of the endive plant, and it adds a slight chocolate flavor to the dark coffee roast and takes away much of the bitterness. There's also an underlying nutty taste to the brew.

In terms of caffeine, there's an estimated 100 mg in each cup, so it's a potent brew. The coffee is very dark, even after adding cream. It doesn't take much to go full throttle on Cafe Du Monde Coffee & Chicory. We used two tablespoons to make five cups of coffee, and were amped up for a couple hours after drinking a cup.

It's great fuel for walking through the French Quarter, or even downtown Phoenix.

There's something even better to do with Cafe du Monde coffee: Cafe sua da, Vietnamese iced coffee. Get yourself a little filter for a buck or two from your friendly Asian grocer, add the brewed coffee to sweetened condensed milk, and pour over ice. Deeeelicious, and a good buzz too!
