Lion Meat is Back on the Plate in Arizona

Hold your picket signs, people. The folks at Mesa's Il Vinaio are not serving lion meat again. After last year's uproar, when owner Cameron Selogie started serving lion burgers as a special for the World Cup (um, do they really even eat lion in South Africa?), the restaurant started getting protests and bomb threats. That was the end of that.

But now a Tucson restaurant, Boca Tacos y Tequila, is preparing to serve lion meat tacos in February, according to the Arizona Daily Star.

The eatery's served everything from rattlesnake to Rocky Mountain Oysters in a tortilla, for its Exotic Taco Wednesdays.

For its February 16th event, Boca will serve the king of the jungle in the form of street tacos, with a variety of toppings and housemade salsas. The FDA-approved meat is legal, and will be purchased from a farm in Southern California.

But you won't be able to just stop by for a ferocious snack to quell your taco cravings; pre-paid orders must be made by 3 p.m. on February 7.

By the way, one lion taco will set you back $8.75.

Owner Bryan Mazon, whose wife Maria Jose Mazon is the chef at Boca, told the Star that he's not expecting to profit from the stunt -- he's just looking for exposure.

"In all reality, what I want is just people to know that I'm here," he said. "That's the way to do it. You can't get these tacos anywhere else."

Indeed, he'll likely get attention in spades. The last time I chatted with Selogie, for comment on Caffe Boa chef Payton Curry's reindeer tasting menu, he said that he didn't actually get any boost in business.

"Other than taking up our time," he told me, "It was neutral."

"The FDA-approved meat is legal, and will be purchased from a farm in Southern California." For all of you who only see what you want to see, try reading the article. Not that I'm planning on having one but really, farm raised is not endangered. If you had been born in another part of the world you would have a different religion and different customs, it may not be for you but unless you're a vegetarian then meat is meat.

Really have people had a need to eat endangered species? There are plenty of other animals that are raised for food or have such high population in the wild they should be served more. I actually recently read that there are far too many wild horses and they need to have them open up to be served as meat for consumption.

i am not vegetarian or vegan, but the way i see it is if you eat meat, its kind of ridiculous to only care about eating it if its endangered.

(and i will admit, i dont have any desire to eat lion. but cmon)

compeletly stupid and un-ethical! Lions are an endangered species and should never be served as food! this is the type of things that desensitize people and make them think all is ok in the world, we can eat lions? how can they be endangered? we loose species every day through out the world and this is a good reason as to why!

You suck if you eat Simba

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the lion a member of the CAT family? Gulp! I'd no sooner eat a lion taco than I would a Siamese sandwich or a Tabby kabob. I suppose if the FDA declared farm-raised puppies fit for human comsumption, there'd be a few consciousless folks out there selling and buying Fido sliders. And may they all choke on their profits and shit themselves afterward.

To the idiot owners and any idiot patrons who eat lion meat at this restaurant, I hope you enjoy it. The lion will be extinct in about 15 years. Chow on down, you self-absorbed gluttons.
