We're barely over a week into December, but the onslaught of over-the-top holiday eating has already begun.

This Saturday and Sunday, get a taste of Mexico's culinary Christmas tradition at the Food City Tamale Festival, an annual event that features handmade tamales from dozens of local church parishes.

From green corn to red chile beef, expect all kinds of tasty tamales made from time-honored family recipes. Eat 'em on the spot or purchase a bunch to stock your fridge or freezer.

When you get a breather from all the eating, check out crafts and live entertainment as well.

The Food City Tamale Festival takes place at Cesar Chavez Plaza (201 W. Washington St.) in Downtown Phoenix, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free, and tamale prices vary.
