Make Tamales With Barrio Cafe Chef Silvana Salcido Esparza

Better start thinking about the holidays, people. Now that the Halloween hangovers are starting to fade, there's work to be done, shopping lists to be made, and a whole lot of food to be devoured between now and New Year's.

Barrio Cafe chef Silvana Salcido Esparza's offering a heck of a hot ticket for December, a hands-on tamale-making class that would make just as much of a great early Christmas present as it would a useful how-to on favorite Mexican holiday eats.

Talk about learning from a pro -- Esparza was nominated for a James Beard Award this past year. And as if tamale-making doesn't sound fun enough, participants will be able to slurp down a margarita while making their goodies.

Classes will be offered at 11 a.m. on December 11, 11 a.m. on December 13, and 6 p.m. on December 13. It's $60 per person (cash only), and space will be limited to 20 people per class, so early sign-up is highly recommended. Proceeds will benefit the Calle 16 Mural Project. For reservations, call 602-636-0240.
