Now Open: Black Forest Haus

Six months ago, fans of German food and drink had to cry into their beers when Black Forest Mill closed its doors after developing a raucous reputation for late-night dance parties. While the deejays have since moved on to other venues, the restaurant (4900 E. Indian School, 602-957-0152) is ready for a comeback with a new name and new operators.

As of today, Black Forest Haus is in business for lunch and dinner, helmed by chef Klaus Baechle and his wife Nancy, formerly of Flagstaff's Matterhorn Grill.

Nancy Baechle tells me the menu is about 90 percent German cuisine -- including sausages, six different schnitzels, sauerbraten, apple strudel, and more. A menu of bar snacks to go along with German wines and five beers on tap (more by the bottle) starts at 4 p.m.

Weekday lunch runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., while dinner, 5 to 10 p.m., is available Tuesday through Saturday. Soon, they'll also begin Sunday brunch service, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Two dinners and a draft beer will set you back about $60 with tip. Gulasch suppe, hot & spicy, the way it should be. Sauerbraten was very tasty. Spatzle was authentic, not just manufactured noodles. We'll be back for seconds.

Es ist köstlich! My wife and I ate there last night and were very impressed. I had the sauerbraten with spatle and red cabbage- excellent! My wife had the salmon with almond-pesto crust, spatzle and the biggest, freshest asparagus anywhere... We have a new Top10 favorite restaurant!!! Fresh ingredients, nice beer and wine selection. My former favorite German restaurant, Mueller's Black Forest Inn, spoiled me with their hospitality and home-style dishes and when they left I knew nothing would come close. Well, until now. Thank you, Klaus and Nancy, you were a great choice for my birthday and we can hardly wait to bring our family and friends to dinner!

GREAT atmosphere (forgot I was not in Germany--and I am a German professor who grew up in Germany!) The food is as good if not better than I remembered from Flagstaff/Matterhorn! My tourism industry friend from Scottsdale who has an equally wide range of German experience was impressed, too. Loved the dance floor and live music, all the realia on the walls and of course the hospitality! HURRA FUER KLAUS UND NANCY! Alles Gute fuers Restaurant im kommenden Jahr und darueber hinaus!

Huge fans here of Klaus and Nancy's cooking and restaurant expertise! So glad that they will be within striking distance of Northern AZ as their contributions to Flagstaff dining and unfailing quality staff, food and attention to detail are already much missed!

Great food, beautiful ambiance, and spectacular service! Just a tid-bit of updated info: They are open for lunch straight through 5 pm, until dinner begins! Hooray!!!

My students & I loved these folks and their great food in Flagstaff—they hosted NAU events like German Club's Oktoberfest, sponsored the German Honors Society as well as a local soccer team! I for one will be making regular trips down to get a marvelous German food & beer fix whenever I can't get to Germany!

I'm really looking forward to seeing this place work out well and force Haus Murphy's hand to actually put effort into preparing their food again (I live closer to it!). Haus Murphy's seems to just let the dishwasher prepare all food (in a microwave, it seems, based on some past schnitzel) outside of weekend dinner hours these days.

Well, they survived opening night and it was packed! Food was incredible and the beer on tap was great (5 German beers on tap!!!). Will definitely be back.

Can't wait to stop in. Hopefully the bartenders are quality people and know how to pour a full glass of beer.

This place is guaranteed to be the best german restraunt in the valley. I've been to the matterhorn, and it is without question some of the finest german food this side of munich. If you love your schnitzel and good-and in some cases hard to find- german beer, check it out.
