Get Ready for Cupcake Love-In Oct. 10
Plus, your cupcake consumption will benefit Singleton Moms, a local nonprofit assisting single mothers battling cancer, and Safe Haven, a no-kill animal shelter, so it's not only guilt-free but also cause-supporting.
"We really wanted to shine a light on small, local businesses, while also raising money for local charities that benefit women, children and animals," says Tracy Dempsey of Tracy Dempsey Originals and the event's co-organizer with Kelly Garcia of Butter & Me. "I'm really excited to see how many people come out, how much money we raise for our charities and the reaction to some of the lesser-known pastry chefs."
(Don't glaze over the cupcake wars, cupcake demos and cupcake-eating competition, either.... More sweet details after the jump.)
All of the cupcake makers will have mini-cupcakes for all to sample and the chance to enter any or all of five cupcake competition challenges: Best Classic Cupcake, Best Savory Cupcake, Best Tasting Frosting, Best use of Secret Ingredient (Chilis and/or Cilantro), and Most Outrageous Cupcake.
Who will win the ultimate cupcake war for the Best of Show Title? That's up to the judges: Gwen Walters, Food Writer; Author and Chef; Bernie Kantak; Chef and Restaurateur; Susie Timm; Foodies Like Us Co-founder; Lindsey Fosse; Yelp Phoenix Community Manager; and our very own Amy Silverman, Phoenix New Times Managing Editor. (So much for peace and love... But bring on the cupcakes!)
"Neither Kelly nor I will compete," says Dempsey, "We want to be cheerleaders for everyone." But she has heard some of the competitors' cupcake gameplans: "The competition cupcakes are really exciting. They're really taking it very seriously. I keep reminding them that this is supposed to be for fun, saying 'Have fun but shine!'"
The cupcake-eating competition is going to be an ultimate throwdown: Three minutes to inhale as many full-size cupcakes, frosting and all, as you can (and can keep down) in the style of your choosing. Check out how our own "Feast of Fury" Zachary Fowle fairs up against local chefs, Yelpers and foodies. Has anybody called the Guinness Book of World Records yet?
Bring the kids (6 and under are free) and set the up with frosting and sprinkles at the decorating table (and pray for the sugar crash afternoon naptime later).
|Show your Cupcake Love-In love for $5 in raffle tickets free.|
Raffle tickets are a dollar each, and can be used silent-auction style to increase your odds of taking home some pretty sweet swag. The more you buy, the better your chance AND the more money that goes to charity. Cha-ching.
Before you succumb to a sugar coma, make sure to grab a photo of your frosting-filled face in the photo booth and see if you won anything. Then feel free to crash on your couch for the better part of the afternoon.
