Number 27: Pulled pork at Joe's Real BBQ
If there's anything not to love about this downtown Gilbert barbecue joint -- which has become a local institution, and is packed at lunchtime -- I haven't found it. Killer ribs, brisket, mac 'n cheese, pit beans, homemade root beer . . . it all suits me just fine. And I love the friendly, old-fashioned vibe here. The 1929 brick building makes a great setting for cafeteria-style grubbing.
Pulled pork is my go-to dish, and for good reason.
When I want something plain and simple, this juicy heap of meat just oozes savory, smoky flavor, thanks to the low-and-slow cooking method and a pile of pecan wood that fuels the smoker. Resistance is truly futile when I see and smell this addicting stuff.
It's also a delicious vehicle for the homemade barbecue sauces. Go traditional and tangy, or habanero-hot. Either way, you can't go wrong.
