National Donut Day -- Free 'Nuts Around Phoenix

It's National Donut Day. (Or is it Doughnut? We always wonder.)
With temperatures soaring in the Valley this weekend, you might want to stick a glazed donut on each butt cheek and look in the mirror before indulging. But if you don't give a hoot, here are some local spots giving away free donuts today, as part of the First Friday in June donut celebration started, we're told, in honor of the Salvation Army chicks who served donuts to the soldiers during WWI.
Hey, beats those disgusting MREs.

Dunkin Donuts is offering a free donut with purchase of a coffee drink. Check it out here.
Even better, Krispy Kreme has no coffee-strings attached. Participating stores will fork over a free donut (they spell 'em doughnut) all day today. Call first to be sure your location's participating. You can locate stores here.
The Phoenix Business Journal reports that Fry's is giving free donuts to firefighters, and has them on sale for the rest of us, through June 8.
What we really wish is that VooDoo Donuts -- the Portland, Oregon shop with the maple bacon bar -- would open an outpost here. Then again, it's fine with us if they wait til after swimsuit season.
