Flancer's Seeking Competitors for Charity Pizza-Eating Contest

Flancer's is offering an all-you-can-eat pizza deal Sunday - with a catch. The special only is available from 11 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.

That's general manager Jimmy Tucker's clever way of promoting the Gilbert restaurant's 10th annual charity pizza-eating contest.

Only 16 contestants have signed up for this year's event, leaving nine spots still open. Tucker wonders if people are being scared off by the return of champion Chiun "Jimmy" Peng (pictured above with restaurant owner Jeff Flancer and Miss Arizona 2009 Erin Nurss), who scarfed down a record 13 slices last year.

Gilbert sci-fi artist Tray Mead, who won in 2007 and 2008, sat out last year's contest, but promised to return if someone beat his then-record of 12 and a half slices. Mead has yet to sign up this year.

Competitors will eat as many slices (each slice is one-eighth of an 18-inch cheese pizza) as they can in 15 minutes. Entry fee is $30, and the winner gets $500 and will be crowned by Miss Arizona 2010 Savanna Troupe.

The pizza contest caps a week of fund-raising events at Flancer's for the Wounded Warrior Project, which runs sports programs for wounded U.S. soldiers.
