Chef Aaron May's Autostrada Opens Tomorrow

may.jpgWhat to do this Saturday? Well, if you want to hit up the very newest place in town, there's Autostrada, a casual Italian spot at DC Ranch. Tonight's their last night of "friends and family" service, and tomorrow is their first full day open to the general public.

This is the long-awaited new restaurant from chef Aaron May, who's also behind Spanish tapas lounge Sol y Sombra (also at DC Ranch), and Over Easy, the cozy breakfast joint in east Phoenix.

"It's going very well," says May, "but there's going to be a small learning curve."

He goes on to explain, for example, that Autostrada's panini will be like the panini they serve in Milan, not the Americanized versions that are so ubiquitous these days.

"We're doing Italian city food, so it won't be food from just one region," May says. You'll find dishes from Rome, Venice, and beyond.

The menu's not up on the website yet, but Autostrada will be serving daily breakfast (7 to 11 a.m.), lunch (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.), and dinner (5 p.m. to final seating at 10 p.m.). In the a.m., look for European-style breakfast, like housemade pastries, toasted ciabatta with homemade fruit preserves and ricotta, and poached egg with speck and warm polenta. Lunch will feature panini, antipasto (such as ricotta with Ligurian olive oil and cherrywood balsamico), contorni (such as roasted beets with gorgonzola, or white asparagus with walnut sauce and currants), and dessert. At dinner, look for the same contornit and antipasto menus, as well as primi (pastas) and secondi (meat and fish dishes).
