Joe Arpaio Recall Supporters Set Up "Camp Recall Arpaio" in Downtown Phoenix

Nativists, Comicon enthusiasts, and supporters of the effort to recall Sheriff Joe Arpaio from office.

Downtown Phoenix was abandoned on Sunday, save for these three groups as members of the pro-recall organizations Respect Arizona and Citizens for a Better Arizona set up tents on the plaza in front of the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors Auditorium at 205 West Jefferson Street.

Respect Arizona campaign manager Lilia Alvarez said her group would be camping out Sunday and Monday nights, and would be either in front of the BOS auditorium or across the street at Cesar Chavez Plaza till 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, May 30, which is the deadline for the effort to turn in its signatures to Maricopa County Elections.

Alvarez estimates that the recall now needs 90,000 more signatures to have a cushion in addition to the 335,317 necessary to force a recall.

"We're really pushing now for Arpaio to resign," she told me. "After this ruling, we should not have to spend the taxpayer dollars to have a recall special election."

Vietnam vet Julio Ortega stopped by to sign the recall Arpaio petition

Alvarez was referring to the ruling handed down by federal Judge G. Murray Snow on Friday, finding that the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office racially profiles Latinos and ordering Arpaio's office to stop.

She said Snow's 142-page ruling had given the recall a boost, but whether it would be enough to put the recall drive over the top remains an open question.

"If we're under the amount necessary to trigger an election, we're going to say that," she explained. "We're not going to turn them in unless we hit our mark."

That would be prudent, as Maricopa County Elections Director Karen Osborne estimates that it will cost her office $1.5 million to validate the recall petition's signatures.

A memorial for Arpaio's many victims...

If the county finds that there are enough valid signatures from qualified electors, Arpaio would have five days to resign before a special election is ordered.

If only there were the legal immigrants, USA Citizens, to support USA Citizens for a Fence on the USA Border, and all of you to support legal entry into the USA there would not have been the SB1070.

Memorial Day, the Veterans fought in WWI, WWII to protect and defend the USA from foreigners coming into our Country illegally, they knew to protect the USA Borders.

In America we are all Judged for our own Crimes, not the Crimes committed by others?!

Why don't we make a "Quilt" of People who's lives were "Stolen" by U.S. Citizens?

We Citizens only have to face Justice for our own crimes?!!

This "Texas Organization is a bunch of Racist Idiots!

To: Justice for the ones who committ Crimes, not the In-Justice against the Innocent?!

This type of biased reporting, coomplete with characterizations such as "nativists" lebeling anyone who showed up to stand on the side of legal immigration, is completely expected from the left.  Standiing across the street was a group who look like they had large banners.  I found out that ththose "nativists" some of hispanic nationality, were there standing for AMERICAN citizens killed by illegals who should have been in theior own couontry, less the betrayal by the federal government over the last 20-plus years, for not securing the border.  The illegals are "uninvited" intruders who kill, rape, mame and refuse to render assistance when they run over our citizens.

In addition, our civilized infrastructure is crumbling under the weight of the masses if illegals who use our resources, cause pollution, illegally crowd our childrens' schools to the detriment our OUR children, and who have for decades caused logjams in the ER's across the country.  The left will soon become victims of their own warped sence of who should be here and who should not.

Time to stand up for American families and taxpayers.

From the beginning I've stated that this effort would fail.  Unfortunately, it is as it should be.  The idea that parraz could continue to use the recall loophole to further his personal agenda needed to be put in check.

The biggest problem with this recall was the premise that Arpaio would resign if the respective signature countwere reached.  That was based on a single statement made by a single person during a closed door meeting very early in the game.  It became the spring board from which this lil parraz group rallied.

There was no viable candidate during the election cycle, and the anti arpaio effort failed.  There continues to be no viable replacement candidate, and this alone is THE reason this recall effort failed.  To think that another Jerry Lewis was going to emerge from nowhere was extremely short sighted.

Jerry Lewis was used by progressives to further their agenda and then tossed aside.  There was no loyalty to him and he was redistricted and tossed out on the street corner.  This is the way of the "progressive" plan.  Woo conservatives to think they are "working" across the aisle for the benefit of all and then stomp them out at the first given opportunity.

Parraz and Co. used Jerry Lewis and then turned on him.  This is the single reason no respectable replacement for Arpaio will surface under the Parraz shadow.  No progressive will be the Sheriff of Maricopa County.  Unfortunately we are stuck with Arpaio as long as he decides he will stay...

Actually everyone needs to call the Phoenix Police and complain about those tents that are set up down there. People actually went to jail during Occupy for that. What happened to their strict "Anti-Camping ordinance" Is this another example of the double standards that we have in Phoenix City Government? That non emergency number is 602-262-6151.

Sooner rather than later, Joe Arpaio will properly and lawfully leave office. Even if the recall effort fails, he is 81. Time is on our side. I can wait.

david_saint01

@StolenLivesQuilt ok, first of all..if you were about laws, then you would support the recall due to MCSO constantly VIOLATING THE CIVIL RIGHTS OF AMERICAN CITIZENS WITH BROWN SKIN! if you are dedicated to children, then you should be for the recall since Arpaio pulled detectives off CHILD SEX CRIMES due to political investigations taking priority. (reference Goldwater Institute articles for a Republican point of view, since they brought those to light). if you were about protecting citizens, you would be fore the recall since his office has FAILED TO PROTECT CITIZENS, as mentioned in various ways above, along with his trying to charge sitting criminal judges with RICO and bribery, absent any evidence, because they dared rule against him. Im happy you speak for victims, but supporting arpaio is like supporting the criminals that led you to your cause.

@StolenLivesQuilt Will the the Texas crowd give us the $100m that MCSO ADMITTED to ILLEGALY SPENDING?  Will they pay to investigate the 400 sex crimes MCSO simply IGNORED?  Will they pay the court costs that will occur now that the Clown Sheriff was found to have done ILLEGAL racial profiling?

@indypole  The reasons for recalling Arpaio aren't left/right or pro/anti illegal immigration.

He's simply not a competent Sheriff and his failure has cost the taxpayers a LOT of money.

The only reason he keeps getting elected is that small-minded people think that he's some sort of genius when it comes to catching illegals, when he really doesn't even do that well.

WhoKnows

@indypole If you REALLY stand up for taxpayers, you'll SIGN THE RECALL.  Look at the MILLIONS wasted by Arpaio, including $99.5 MILLION MCSO ADMITS it ILLEGALLY misspent.  Look at the 400 sex CRIMES IGNORED by MCSO.  Look at the cost of the law suits brought on by Arpaio and NOW DISBARRED Andy Thomas!  Should I go on?  You stand up for IDIOTS, and NOT taxpayers!

I used "loophole" with reason.  In reality, there are no loopholes...either its legal or it's not.  To describe something legal as a loophole is self serving and lacks credibility.  Progressives love the term loophole when it fits their agenda.

@WhoKnows i guess they dont see their blatant hypocrisy in their little mission statement..since joe does the exact opposite..IE failed to protect kids from child predators, was a party to citizens rights being violated, along with a few judges, and their failing to protect the community by putting immigration over REAL crimes.

@indypole why would i want to join a group that supports someone that directly contradicts their mission? lol ignored sex crimes against kids, is responsible for a culture of racism and allows deputies to violate American citizens civil rights for votes, he doesnt protect the community (how can they when their case close average is less than 30%), and what about the likes of Atencio, and Norberg, and the many others that have died senselessly in his jails because of his guards actions....maybe we should make a quilt showing the faces of all of ARPAIO'S VICTIMS!

@indypole NO THIS IS ALL YOU NEED RIGHT HERE: "

o I haven't. Our focus has been on different issues. I had not supported the recall previously because he had just been elected and there was nothing new on which to base a recall. But this ruling certainly provides a basis
GI [Goldwater Institute] rules prohibit staff from being formally involved in election campaigns. But I will sign a petition and let folks know I have done so. (emphasis mine)
In 2008, for the Goldwater Institute, Bolick issued a position paper titled, Mission Unaccomplished: The Misplaced Priorities of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office. In the executive summary, it states (in part):
The Maricopa County Sheriffs Office is responsible for vitally important law-enforcement functions in one of the largest counties in the nation.  It defines its core missions as law-enforcement services, support services, and detention.
MCSO falls seriously short of fulfilling its mission in all three areas.  Although MCSO is adept at self-promotion and is an unquestionably tough law-enforcement agency, under its watch violent crime rates recently have soared, both in absolute terms and relative to other jurisdictions.  It has diverted resources away from basic law-enforcement functions to highly publicized immigration sweeps, which are ineffective in policing illegal immigration and in reducing crime generally, and to extensive trips by MCSO officials to Honduras for purposes that are nebulous at best.  Profligate spending on those diversions helped produce a financial crisis in late 2007 that forced MCSO to curtail or reduce important law-enforcement functions."
