Joe Arpaio Recall: A Chance to Prove the Pundits Wrong

Wanna see Joe go bye-bye for good? Then this April 4 event is mandatory for you . . .

What was the most fun for me as a columnist during the recall of ex-state Senate President Russell Pearce -- other than watching Pearce crash and burn?

That nearly all the pundits in Arizona ended up being as wrong as white shoes after Labor Day.

Remember, Pearce was at the zenith of his power in early 2011, a righter-than-right-wing wanna-be John Wayne, in his stomping grounds, the deeply conservative Legislative District 18.

He had just been re-elected by a healthy margin, and had ascended to the state Senate presidency following his legislative triumph the year prior with Senate Bill 1070.

Other politicians feared him. And he was wildly popular with the rabid Republican base in this state.

Which is why almost everyone in the local press corps thought the effort to oust him from office was "doomed," to borrow a word used by the Arizona Republic's Laurie Roberts this week to describe the current recall effort against Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

Roberts' assessment followed an announcement by Respect Arizona, the Arpaio recall group, that it no longer had the funds to pay professional petition circulators as much as $2 or more per signature.

Just two weeks ago, Respect Arizona was riding high, with news that it had 120,000 valid signatures from qualified electors, signatures verified through county election rolls.

RA suspended the paid campaign on Sunday, March 17. Lilia Alvarez, RA's campaign manager, declined to give me the final count of valid signatures on the 17th, stating that RA was holding that information close to the vest.

But check this: If RA collected valid signatures at the same rate from March 6, when the 120,000-mark was announced 'til March 17, then by my calculation, the organization would have picked up close to 37,714 additional signatures in those 11 days.

Which would mean that RA may have around 157,714 valid signatures in the bank.

If RA were able to maintain the same pace, scoring 3,428.57 signatures (on average) per day, in the 74 days from March 18 to May 30, they would end up with around 411,428 valid sigs, exceeding the 335,317 needed to recall Joe.

By this math, the recall is still possible, though obviously it's a longer shot without the paid circulators.

(Note: Keep in mind, I'm not including the chaff, the majority of those signatures that would be tossed. For example, on March 6, there were, according to RA, 150,000 signatures, 120,000 of them verified.)

RA has enough money to maintain its operational costs, but it needs more -- a lot more.

Thing is, if a few big-money Dems (or Republicans) were to start writing checks, RA could, hypothetically, restart the paid drive.

I don't think ol' Joe's health will hold up for the next 3.75 years.

This is a wake up call to all the people who have ever spoken out against Arpaio on this site.  This is the best opportunity EVER to finally rid ourselves of Joe Arpaio.  If you have been a victim of his abuses, this is the ONLY chance you will have to hold Arpaio accountable - the Department of Justic sure as hell isn't going to do anything about it.  Arpaio's own campaign manager Chad Willems himself had to concede that if we get the signatures, "Joe Arpaio goes away."    Please go to www.recallarpaio.com and donate.  Come to the event on April 4th and volunteer to circulate petitions or come by my office and pick some up. We can't let this opportunity pass.  Failure is not an option this time around.

So sorry to hear that you just can't seem to get the signatures for a recall.  I just find this hard to believe because all I have heard from you is that everyone in Arizona just hates Sheriff Joe!  Gosh, is it possible you maybe miscalculated just a little bit?  Move along folks, there's no story here.  Sheriff Joe won a "fair and balanced" election.  That's how a democracy works.  I guess that is something you kind of people will never understand.

It can work, but we'll need some ridiculously wealthy people to make some generous donations. Remember, it only took one bullshit ad, disparaging Paul Penzone, for this guy to slide the curve last November. It can work, but everyone who's in it needs to stay in it until the end; otherwise it can fail at any time.

If the recall continues to get funding and volunteers it can succeed.

the difference is, Arpaio has much more widespread support, and his supporters will ALWAYS be vocal and fighting for him to stay in office. those who oppose him THINK they have some numbers...but we've seen, at the polls, that they are way outnumbered. and always will be :)

There will be no recall. How many times must I tell you this?

It would be easier if you would just die any way possible!  Do the world a favor and just off yourself!

@DumbassArizona No because then he gets to be a martyr. I want AT LEAST a DOJ investigation first. Maybe that alone will put him in the grave.

@chadsnow perhaps Mary Rose Wilcox could donate a portion of the proceeds she conspired to steal from teh County with her buddy David Smith.  She doesn't like arpaio.  Why doesn't she throw some of that money your way..or your boyfriend Randy Parraz..why doesn't he put his money where his mouth is?  or you?  You are an attorney who feeds off the illegals..it is in your best interest, even an investment of sorts for your future.   Truth is, you all are a bunch of leaches to society and it's someone else who is responsible for funding your political humdrum.

@TeaPublican Sorry to hear you just can't get your pea sized brain around the democratic process. Any elected official has the right to be challenged while in office, hence the recall process. And gosh, while it's a longshot, maybe this crooked old fucker will be ousted in a "fair and balanced" recall election for all the egregious highhanded bullshit that he's pulled over years. In a democracy people do not have just sit and take the corrupt actions of their public officials no matter how blind and complicate the "majority" was who voted them in. I guess this is something you "people" (and I use the term loosely) will never understand. And if its such a non-story, why is Joe's campaign manager rallying the troops, and little trolls like yourself commenting on stories like this one???

@truthseekeraz  Although your faulty arguments against laws made to protect the innocent children are, of themselves ludicris, arpaio has nothing to do with the laws currently on the books.

@MrDuke @TeaPublican   Bahahahaha!   WEll you can try to prove the pundits wrong all you want to.  It simply doesn't matter.  The MAJORITY of the voters have spoken, and Joe IS the Sheriff.   If you dont' like Sheriff Joe then vote him out of office...Oh wiat a minute... you already tried that didn't you!   That's how a Democracy works.  If you win the votes, that means you won.  And for those that didn't win, or just simply can't win anything, I guess they can sit around like you and bitch all day.

@yourproductsucks @truthseekeraz When Arpaio chooses to selectively enforce the law he is not doing the job he was elected to do. I see you are once again coming to Arpaio's defense, thought you were not pro Arpaio, YPS ? Which is it YPS ? You claim to not be pro Arpaio, yet you always seem to be the first person to come running to his defense.......BTW this recall will move forward and be successful !

@truthseekeraz What is the name of the person who went to prison for 75 years for non-sexual "touching" in a public swimming pool?

I'll bet you ignore answering the question.

You are a loon.  It's not arpaio's job to correct laws.  It's his job to enforce them.
