Joe Arpaio Lies, Insults His Deputies, Promises School-Posses with "Automatic and Semi-Automatic" Weapons

But for our semi-senile autocrat, if the deputies involved had more firepower, they (magically) never would have been shot. That's why, he promised, he would be arming "all my deputies with automatic, semi-automatic weapons."

So both the posse members and all of the actual deputies will have automatic and semi-automatic weapons. That's a situation Hartmann compared to Uganda at the end of its civil war, or the current anarchy in Somalia.

Hey, maybe Joe should have his own nuke? I mean, why not? Then he could protect us from enemy attack as well. Better safe than sorry, right?

As for his geriatric posse men and women, each reeking of old-person smell, why, they're the same as deputies, Arpaio contended, a comparison I'm sure his actual deputies love.

"My posse have been through the same requirements as regular deputies," Arpaio prevaricated. "Over 100 hours of training, and refresher courses."

This, of course, is complete bullshit. As I pointed out in a recent post, Arpaio's posse members are not certified by the Arizona Peace Officer and Traininng Board.

That means they are not peace officers and do not have the power of arrest.

They may wear uniforms nearly-identical to actual MCSO deputies, but they are not trained like deputes are. Far from it. I'm not sure what this posse "training" actually entails, as AZ POST Executive Director Lyle Mann told me that POST provides zero training to Joe's posse.

According to POST's website, law enforcement agencies enroll their trainees in a POST-certified academy, where they will go through "a minimum of 585 hours of mandated training," and "pass a Comprehensive Final Examination."

Which, I reckon, is a good thing. To compare a pear-shaped posse member to a sworn officer is completely ridiculous. As ridiculous as Arpayaso himself.

Sure, some posse members are former LEOs and ex-military. But even if they've been POST certified in the past, or certified in some other state, if that certification has been inactive for three years after separation from a law enforcement agency, they must renew their certification, or they cannot be re-employed as cops.

The AZ POST website spells out the trouble with acting like a cop when you are not POST-certified:

"A person who has inactive peace officer certification has no law enforcement authority. A person with inactive certification who takes action as a peace officer under certain circumstances may be committing the crime of impersonating a public servant. In order to perform the duties of a peace officer or exercise the authority of a peace officer, a person must have both active peace officer certification and be authorized to exercise that authority or perform those duties by the appointing law enforcement agency."

Arpaio is practically encouraging his posse members to commit "the crime of impersonating a public servant."

I mean, why not identify these posse members as posse members, instead of allowing them to wear uniforms and drive cars that identify them as MCSO deputies, when they are not?

This latest stunt by Joe is a disaster waiting to happen. But hey, this is what 50.7 of the electorate in Maricopa County voted for. And we have four more years of it to endure.

I wonder if one of those army veterans in the Posse, go into Flashback armed with an automatic weapon,  thinking that all those children are the enemy, what is going to happen

"To compare a pear-shaped posse member to a sworn officer is completely ridiculous."

This would be true if we were talking about a "Law Enforcement" agency. Unfortunately, we are talking about the MCSO, the county's premier organized crime family.

All it takes is one simple happy trigger finger and Arpaio will have himself in a noose hanging by a limb of a tree in his own back yard.

I recall being chased around Sun City by a volunteer posse. I was doing mu job of deleting auto parts. I did not know he was tailing me. When I arrived at my destination, this old guy jumped out of his car, mind you he had cop lights on it too, he was threatening me and was going to turn me in and then I noticed he had his hand on his holster. I turned to him and said, " I did not break any laws. I did not speed. I am only guilty of being a Latino. You on the other hand are impersonating an officer, so, you probably broke more laws just cause you think you have the right to harass and chase people. Talk about profiling, I'm a woman and Hispanic, two thing that old timers hate. I told him where he could go, and I proceeded to tell him he better get out of my sight in 5 minutes or I am going to make a complaint.". He then hurriedly got into his make shift cop car and left. I never was bothered by him or any other jerk water posse.

Scot you mentioned the kid from yesterday and his bullying story, he was already suspended last year for designing a "hit list". I don't believe his story and to say "good for him" is asinine. There are other ways to handle bullies and when I went to school I did it. It's called being badder then the bully and kicking his ass. It seems more kids would rather have a weapon do it for them now. It's not just one thing that will solve this problem it is many combined and gun control over assault weapons and high capacity clips of a start.

It's not exact science Joe, but it's human nature, these idiots don't always wanna die too, but i think it makes some of them think twice and the more of us that have concealed permits the less it would happen, I think. They go after people they think are defenseless, although as someone else pointed out gun control or for that matter everyone having a gun will not stop the evil from doing horrible things. I think the facts are that we are never going to curb this sort of thing till people have their heads screwed on straight, and until many other things take place first..look at that kid yesterday...shot a bully, good for him...that needs to stop and who knows, maybe bullies will think twice before doing their shit to others from now on in fear of later retribution ? Certainly arming everyone isn't going to solve it either. Explaining those things you mentioned on says to me that having armed people around didn't stop anything there from happening anymore than if everyone laid down there weapons and said no more, which we know will never happen. I still don't know what the pic has to do with the story, lol...I'm lost, lol

Watch out ... here come some FACTS!!!!

If any of you ignorant people would actually look at the Posse and what they do, you might change your thinking. Attend orientation and see the age range of people that are in the Posse. For all of you that think everyone is from Sun City, you are sadly mistaken. There is a large group that range from 20-45. And if you start with OMG, 20! ... well, they can fight for your country at 18 ... still wanna complain? The man hours that the Posse provides every year, if you were to pay them, because remember, they work for FREE ... would be about 4.5 MILLION dollars. Not only do they give their time for FREE, but all of their uniforms and equipment are payed for by themselves. Nothing comes out of your pocket ... even the marked cars they drive aren't county owned.

well i'm a big believer in if evil doers think that people are carrying weapons themselves, such in the case of concealed weapons permits, they are less likely to commit their evil, just saying...they want places where no one will fight back, but if they think everyone will they will back down

The old man is truly a goober. Such an embarassment to law enforcement.

What he didn't say was that his deputy who is now fighting for his life very likely did not follow trained procedures in how to deal with what is known as a "High Risk -or- Felony Stop". I have the utmost sympathy for the family of the deputy and I hope he pulls through and lives to take his due retirement. However, he apparently made some mistakes that put him in peril and almost cost him his life.

The old man described his deputy as "old school and tough". Neither of which will stop bullets.

With 29 years of MCSO service I think the deputy should have been riding a desk until his retirement date. I also think that having elderly members of the posse in uniform and marked cars is asking for one or more of those posse members to be attacked. The old man didn't have an answer for that one.

Perhaps divine intervention will occur and the old man will retire to a snowy pasture in Massachusetts, where he belongs.

In the mean time professional law enforcement officers are taking the brunt of being the ass of jokes due to this nasty, evil, selfish bastard who calls himself a 'shurf'.

Schools require extensive background checks on all employees.  Are the Prune Posse members checked to the same degree?  There have been posse members that are convicted criminals!

As far as the training goes, everthing that is taught is at AZPOST standards. Its not taught at AZPOST, but all of the procedures are the same. And when you see a Posse member carrying OC spray, guess what? ... they had to get sprayed with it in order to carry it. (I know there are some of you that can respect getting sprayed with OC) No, the training time isn't the same as an officer/deputy academy ... Posse don't need to learn ARS and traffic laws, they don't pull anyone over. But they do back up not only their deputies, but officers of other agencies.

@WhoKnows actually many schools do NOT require background checks on all employees. They don't even drug test unless an accident has occurred. I taught for 6 yrs and I come from a LOOOONG line of educators. Regardless, I agree with your point 100%

Tommy_Collins

@WhoKnows Not likely, I'm afraid. The posse members have to pay a LARGE membership fee to join and then (I believe) they have annual fees as well. I think the whole posse gig is simply more warm bodies in look-alike uniforms to perpetuate an aura that MCSO is out in force and protecting the world from all those damn illegals. I am friends with a former posse member whose membership was cancelled after he endorsed Dan Saban in 2008. He has told me it's all about the numbers and only those who kiss the old guy's ass are allowed to stay. Background? Not hardly, as long as the money is good...

There are backgound check and finger prints done. No, they are all not criminals like some of you like to believe. As far as paying membership dues ... yes there are dues. But those dues go to buy equipment, the equipment that you, the citizens of Maricopa County, DON'T provide. Ever purchase a portible police radio? Check out the price, maybe you would like to donate the funds for one ... ya, didn't think so. They are not a bunch of *ss kissers like you want to believe either, they work hard and you should all be greatful, you aren't the one out there putting your time in. So continue to sit at your desk in the AC/Heat and rip on a bunch of people that do nothing but give back ... or pay it forward ...

@Tommy_Collins @WhoKnows I know a couple of posse members that freely admit the reason they joined was so that if they got pulled over when leaving a bar, they could flash their membership card in hopes of getting out of a DUI.

A guy I worked with was here on a green card and RECRUITED by the posse, and was offered ready access to the MCSO gun range (even though a green card holder cannot own guns!).  He said to the posse guys he wasn't a US Citizen, and the posse guys said "who cares"?  He laughed about it and Joke's posse for a week!

@jonnyquest

I have put out the challenge to any person to site any example of when an AR15 or a 30 round clip in a glock was needed for self defense or contributed positively to our society in any way.  No example exists.

Your point was obvios in your first remark.   My point is how ridiculus it is to think that any amount of security will keeep any child safe 100% of the time from gun nuts and the gun nut culture that the NRA and ALEC have bought and paid for in the form of almost 100% of every republican in office (and some dems).

So how much is enough? When the conversation has become so slanted that the only solution to gun violence is more guns we've crossed the line of resonable debate.  Arming teachers, rent-a- cops, possee or having the National Guard in our schools to protect children and the NRA's gun lobby is not freedom nor is it the intent of the second amendment.

jonnyquest

@dennis20 "No school or child need the same protection." So business as usual? No changes? You're the dumb fuck.

jonnyquest

@dennis20 The President is important. He must be protected. ABSOLUTELY!!! My point is that his security team doesn't rely on gun control to protect him because they know it isn't effective. So explain why gun control is somehow effective at protecting schools. I want what all sane people do, that is an effective effort to protect our kids. Dedicated School Resource Officers are a start. Controlled access would be another. Some schools are wide open. NOTHING MORE THAN AN ANGRY SECRETARY TO CHALLENGE PEOPLE!!! That's where we should start. Not gun control. So fuck you too Dennis.

I bet You are one of the Old Fart's asskissers, and probably he gave the script and came to this blog site to spill all that nonsense. If your only function is to watch and call the real cops, forget it. By the time that any officers arrive- in the case of MCSO- it all be over. BTW, You are saying, "Posse don't need to learn ARS and traffic laws" then how do you know what to do. And all those membership dues probably the Shurf is laughing all the way to the bank with it, since nobody dares to question him, maybe all the equipment also comes out of MCSO.

I also wonder if one of the posse happy trigger member shoots someone, do you think that the Old Fart is going to back you up? Probably he would just say, "I DON'T RECALL", what a fucking jocke.
