NRA's Wayne LaPierre and Neo-Nazi Agree on Sandy Hook Solution: More Guns

Plus, all of 'em should be trained in how to bump fire their weapons, in case they have to rain lead on some fruitcake attacking the school. Bump-firing is a technique where you can make a semi-automatic weapon fire kinda-sorta like an automatic weapon.

Thing is, it's hard to aim when you're bump-firing from the hip. So maybe we should outfit their ARs with a bump-fire stock, an ingenious device you just add to the weapon, which uses the rifle's recoil to help you achieve rapid bursts of fire.

According to one video demo I watched, a 20 round magazine is spent in just 1.6 seconds, 30 rounds in 2.4 seconds. This, with the use of the slide stock. It's legal, approved by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and totally badass.

(Just do a YouTube search for "bump fire," and you'll be hooked.)

Oh, and one Army tank per school might be good, too. For the effect of deterrence, if nothing else. It's the very least we can do to protect the kids, our most valuable resource.

A positive side effect of all this is a boost to the economy. Think of all the people who could be employed, all the guns that would be sold. The cost of training and ammunition. What a great way to prime the proverbial pump. Better than a war, even.

What the pinko liberals who so rudely and seditiously interrupted Mr. LaPierre today don't understand is that guns, gun manufacturers and gun pimps like those at the NRA aren't to blame for this problem with mass killings at schools, theaters, malls, etc

Nope, it's "vicious, violent video games" like Grand Theft Auto and Mortal Kombat, and "blood-soaked slasher films" like American Psycho.

Wait a sec, slasher films involve knives. And were there any semi-automatic ARs in American Psycho? I forget. Jeez, that film's nearly 13 years old.

Anyway, it's like Mr. LaPierre said, "Isn't fantasizing about killing people as a way to get your kicks really the filthiest form of pornography?"

Well, maybe not the filthiest. I mean, have you ever seen "Two Girls One Cup" or even "Lemon Party"? Gross. I'd rather watch American Psycho any day.

Still, I get Wayne's point. The Dark Knight Rises killed those people in Aurora, Colorado, not James Holmes and his guns.

And what about Sandy Hook? I'll betcha anything Lanza had been watching HBO's Boardwalk Empire or FX's Sons of Anarchy before he shot his mom in the noggin, and headed out to kill some more.

What other explanation could there possibly be?

I read all the comments on here and many of them have some good ideas. I see a lot of comparisons to Australia, Japan, Canada, etc... as examples of how gun control has worked elsewhere in the world.

One of the biggest things though that I see being missed and overlooked by almost EVERYONE commenting here, is the differences between the US and the places that are being used as comparisons.

You cannot make an apples to apples comparison when what you really have are apples and oranges.

I see a lot of comments about how other 'developed' nations have gun control laws that work, arguments about places like Israel and their gun laws versus their crime rates, etc... and it's all worthless

There are VAST differences between all those places and the US, one of the biggest of those differences is our medical systems and the care that the populace of those countries receive versus the care received in the US.

In every one of the places I see mentioned by people there are programs in place to deal with mental well being, there are programs that are in place to identify those with problems early and get them help for themselves and for the benefit of the populace.

Let's be honest here folks, the US does NOT have these types of programs. In the US it's thought that programs like those are invasive (privacy) and/or socialist in that we don't want to pay for them however we sure as hell want the benefit of them.

In the US you have to hurt someone, which means it's too late, before help is often got or given to these people. We created a society that causes the problems without creating a mechanism to deal with those problems and yet we wonder why we have the problems we have in this country.

Being a part of a society carries some of it's own responsibilities, part of which is the overall care of the populace for the benefit of the populace as a whole. We don't do that in the US. We expect to have our society without having to give a damn about the guy next to us unless we WANT to give a damn about that person.

We want the benefits of a society, without the work and responsibility of a society and yet w are surprised when violence happens.

Until we as a society grow up and wake up to how we treat the problems in our society, or to be blunt how we DON'T treat those problems that we created, we are doomed to keep repeating these incidents.

If you call your local PD or State Law Enforcement agencies you can ask to speak with these units: DUI Enforcement, Narcotics Enforcement, Gang Enforcement, Bicycle Unit, Domestic Violence Unit,  Crime Prevention Unit etc.... BUT, ask for the : GUN ENFORCEMENT UNIT and none are to be found.  Why do we have L.E. specialized units that focus efforts on these crimes; but not on taking guns out of the hands of CRIMINALS, GANGSTERS, AND NUTTERS?????

Bort-LongYear
Bort-LongYear

If our OWN Attorney General was at his post--and actually engaged in finding solutions to L.E. problems; rather than sniffing up his GirlFriends cooter during business hours, maybe he or one of his well educated staff, could come up with some viable ideas.  Naw, he has to assign them to spy on his office staff to see who is leaking his big SECRET AFFAIR to the New Times.   Time and effort on a problem=results; Tom H. only has time of Tom-Foolery.

Bort-LongYear

If the ATF and other L. E. agency would put as much effort in getting guns outa the hands of criminals, gangsters, and crazies--as they do in taking pot off the street or "creating" outrage though bogus operations such as "FAST an FAILURE" gun violence would go down.  How about actually putting effort in using the existing gun laws and get the courts to actually take a hardline stand on THE CRIMINALS AND NUTTERS.  Sheruff Stupnick in Pima County had intel on Loffner (sic) well in advance of his meltdown--and they did NOTHING.  Hey L.E. damn some of you people are stupid. there are OVER 300 million guns in this country, you could stop the sale of every firearm in the future and there will still be illegal ways to get guns for the next 100 years. Criminals will ALWAYS find a way to get a gun. how about we start punishing the Criminal for once and not the tool he chose to use? he could just as easily used a Uhaul and killed a few hundred.

there is NO SUCH THING as an "assault rifle" they are the same Semi automatic rifles that have been in use for over 100 years now, one trigger pull, one bullet fires. and you are dead wrong, a .40 caliber or .45 or .10mm Glock is NOT a peashooter, you are a MORON. They have JUST as much stopping power as the .223mm that the killer used. What if just ONE child could have been saved? dont you think it would have been worth it to those parents if someone was there to stop this guy? the principal was willing to risk her life by lunging at him, the LEAST we could do is give her a fair shot.

I was LUCKY i went to a Private school and our Principle had his CCW permit, he had a lot of training and would have gladly ended this guys life. You guys give far too little credit to the amount of evil in these bad guys, they will ALWAYS find a weapon if they want one. All you do is limit a private citizens choices to defend himself. and YES sometimes an AR15 and a 30 capacity magazine is needed. Remember those little things called the LA RIOTS? I lived on the edge of the riots and we were TERRIFIED the looting was going to move our direction , there were mobs of people stealing, beating white people and Koreans and lighting houses and business on fire. sorry, but a 10 round clip is NOT enough for those extreme circumstances, and that is why people have the right to purchase those for defense. Same thing with Katrina  What exactly are you going to do the next time civil unrest happens and there is no police force to call? they AINT coming, just like they didnt during the riots, and didnt during Katrina ! you are on your own. ITs you people who will be BEGGING us with 30 round magazines for protection the next time something like that happens in your town, dont think its possible? neither did the people in LA, or Katrina, nor did the poor people in Syria or Egypt currently. Desperate situations call for extreme tools, and that is why people want large clips. that does NOT make a weapon an "assault rifle", nor does painting it black, or putting on a collapsible butt stock or hand grip.

If guns didnt save lives and protect people the Police wouldn't carry them. The Police get an average of 40-60 hours training TOTAL on the range and in the classroom for firearms training. You can EASILY get the same and better training than the police offices, you can even get trained by the SAME PERSON that does the training if you look around, Policeman are not magic, they dont have special gun powers limited to only them, You CAN learn to protect yourself and your family, and MOST police officers ENCOURAGE law abiding citizens to do this training ! most cops ENCOURAGE their family members and friends to have a CCW and home defense gun ! wake up people !!! stop believing everything rachel maddow tells you on the MSNBC !! do a LITTLE research for yourself ! You will NEVER get all the guns off the street, you better learn to defend yourself !!

I too was shocked but not surprised by Wayne's incredibly tone-deaf speech on Friday. There was nothing in it that we haven't heard before. Now, one thing for Wayne to ponder is the fact that the Army and Marines just love GTA, Mortal Kombat and Ninja-like games. To excel at them requires excellent hand/eye coordination. Anyone who is really good at them will have no trouble earning his/her sharpshooter badge on the first try. Likewise, fighter jet simulators give aspiring aviators a leg up on the competition. You know, maneuvering at mach 1.7 while locking onto a target, then releasing weapons before he gets blown out of the sky. So, violent and gory games are really good. It seems to me that Wayne would like that. Wait a minute! Did I just give him a new talking point? Damn.

The NRA promised "a meaningful contribution" to gun violence but instead it presents us with the very moldy suggestion it make fully five years ago, after the Virginia Tech massacre:  Put even more guns into the schools.

Moreover, it suggests that the federal govt legislate this, to put the additional gun in every school.  If, instead, the federal govt legislated to put a copy of Darwin in every school, you'd see rightwing pundits stroke out.

It's true, as the NRA says, that the Second Amendment guarantees the right to keep and bear arms -- but it doesn't guarantee that this will be done in secrecy.  It is constitutionally permissible for the govt to require the registration of every gun in the country.  That way, when a gun crime is committed, the investigation can quickly narrow down who might have the gun involved.  By the same token, someone caught with an unregistered gun would have a lot of explaining to do, and some more crimes might be solved.  And, when the registered gun owner dies, the govt can do something to make sure the guns he owned are properly dealt with

    .

Keep in mind that Columbine HAD an armed officer. Virginia Tech had an armed police force and one of the massacres occurred on a military base. It didn't help, did it? Of course this is Arizona, home of the shootout at the OK Corral. The NRA kept quiet for an entire week. They even took down their web site. Many of us criticized their silence. However, with LaPierre's comments the following seems most appropriate:

It is better to remain silent and appear to be a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

This is a perfect eample of how the NRA only cares about arming people, and the profit that comes along with the sale of the guns, rifles, etc. That's how their mentality works, they think: "We just tell them that all they need is put some donut eater with a gun, in every school, and that'll do it", meanwhile thinking on how many arms their partners in the Gun Shops are going to sale, and how much money they are going to get.

@dennis20 "In the words of Syracuse University Professor Dr. Boyce Watkins, this incident highlights the depths of NRA hypocrisy.

“What I find most astonishing about incidents like Sandy Hook is that many people don’t connect to the human side of these tragedies until they hit close to home,” says Dr. Watkins, who is an outspoken critic of the NRA. ”The fact that Mr. Keene’s son is one of the very people that his organization demonizes puts this man in a very awkward position. In fact, it sounds like he is every bit as irresponsible as his fellow gun owner, Nancy Lanza (mother of Adam Lanza).”

The media should ask Keene… what was wrong with your kid? Let’s talk about that and let’s also ask Keene if he’d be saying the things he’s saying if corporations weren’t paying him to say it. Selling your soul to corporate America is certainly the motto of the NRA. But there’s a point where you don’t have a soul left to sell. Mr. Keene will have quite a few regrets on his death bed and just like Nancy Lanza, his extremist viewpoints have ruined the life of his son."

@Flyer9753 I say--all the dope money seized by the Federal Gov'ment and State/local law enforcement should go into fixing the broken mental health system in this country.  You are correct early intervention will interdict many of our would be killers.  The problem, unfortunately, if the seized drug money was taken and used for such a noble cause--the Cops would quit going after it because there would be no incentive to pursue drug seizures.

    Tommy_Collins

@Bort-LongYear Good question. However it's my experience that every action of every police officer every day is tied to gun enforcement in one way or another. Police officers are ALWAYS wary of those who might be armed; whether guns, knives, or other instruments of injury or death.

Unfortunately, Arizona law makes it even easier for us to carry guns concealed, thus making the enforcement issue for peace officers even more difficult than it might be in other states or countries.

Let's put it in perspective, when naming a 'state gun' becomes a priority for our legislators, over budget and medical issues, there is a good possibility that folks from other states have valid reason to view Arizonans as being bumbling fools.

For those agencies, MCSO NOT INCLUDED, that have fugitive apprehension units, many of the probation and parole violations ARE for gun related crimes.

@jonnyquest It depends on the resource officer and the Administration,  The resource officers whom I have had the opportunity to work with have been incompetent.  Specifically one officer was assigned as resource officer after she proved herself to be a danger to her fellow officers when working on the street.  During a fight among students she locked herself in her Office and refused to come out until patrol units and private (unarmed) Officers secured the problem.

The other problem is the lack of prosecution on the part of the administration.  The principle were I worked, refused to allow prosecution of students who committed assaults and arson.  One Security Guard was fired because he insisted that disciplinary action be taken against a student who threatened to gor get a gun and shoot the Guard.

The Principle was more interested in having a clean record so he could get a Superintendency. This same Principle allowed a School board members son to retake the AIMS test after he walked out of the testing site with a copy of the test.

@Tommy_Collins @Bort-LongYear In theory every police officer  enforces DUI laws, narcotics laws, gun laws and hunt fugitives when they come across them; so why have specialized units?  The answer is simple--to focus time, energy and create specialized experience in that particular area of law enforcement.  Focusing enforcement efforts on one particular area of concern has a track record of proven results--gun enforcement is no different.  MCAO has specialized prosecutors that handle only Gang Related   crimes; why?  To enhance the prosecution of those crimes because gangs cause so much PROBLEM in our communities.  Well, guns in the hands of Criminals, Gang members and the Mentally Ill are causing a lot of PROBLEMs in our communities.  Concealed carry has absolutely nothing to do with lawful possession. It is unlawful for criminals or the mentally ill to possess a firearm-whether carried open or concealed.  The issue Mr. Collins is one of desire and will of L.E. and Prosecutors to approach our gun laws a diligently as we pursue Dope and DUI offenders.

@ReggieVV Thank you! That's been my question everytime I hear some lame comment about how arming more citizens would somehow allow someone to rise up and shoot the bad guy.

Remember the armed man at the Jared Loughner shooting in Tucson?  He hesitated pulling his weapon, partly because he feared being taken for a second shooter. Then when he slammed the man holding the gun against the wall, he discovered this was someone merely holding the weaspon. The real shooter was at the bottom of the pile of humans who were suppressing Loughner until the police arrived.  That could have been an even more tragic day than it was.

There are more examples, but the point is just exactly what you say: which gun wielder do you shoot first?

@bobunf To effectively ban guns we would have to go back to the stone age.  During hearings on Clinton's assault weapons ban in El Dorado AR. a high school student constructed a fully automatic M-2 sub-machine gun using sheet metal and parts from the local Ace Hardware store.  This included the magazine.

@bobunf @bgray59 A good concept unfortunately, the deranged will simply move to more deadly methods.  James Holmes was intent on killing as many people as he could.  He used guns in his shooting.  The super capacity Magazine in his rifle jammed.  They are notorious for that.  this prevented the deaths of many people.

Because he intended to kill.  Therefore, Had he not had guns available, he would have used the techniques he used in his apartment.  More victims would have died in a most horrible fashion.

As a former EOD Officer, my team was tasked to simulate situations using various improvised munitions.  The results were always more deadly than if a trained shooter was attempting the same action.

    bobunf
    bobunf

@bgray59 @bobunf Most high school students, and few of the disturbed people who murder others know how to make their own guns.

The idea is to reduce the number of guns from 300 million plus to, say, 10 thousand and make ammunition harder to get.  This will reduce the number of homicides very substantially.  Witness every other developed country in the world.
