Joe Arpaio-Foe Paul Penzone and Republican Grant Woods Vote, and Woods on "Chenal-Gate"

A truffle of online political humor from local comedian Brian Nissen

Woods added that Penzone-supporters are in the uncomfortable position of having to
"count on the collective intelligence of the voters of Maricopa County," and hope that they are at long last fed up with the sheriff's shenanigans.

That's a strategy "fraught with peril," conceded Woods.

"But it does happen," he said. "All of sudden people just hit a point and they go, `I may have supported the guy before, but I can't support the guy anymore.'"

The question is, are we finally at that crossroads?

"If you're not there now after all of the crap that Arpaio's pulled, you're never going to get there," he observed. "Because I can't imagine that he could have done more objectionable things in a pretty short period of time."

Woods expects a close race, or at least closer than Arpaio's ever had before.

"Things are different this time," Woods said. "You have a credible candidate against [Arpaio] in Penzone...Just as importantly, people across the board, from Republicans, Democrats, independents, business people, conservatives, have all seen that [Arpaio] is hurting the state and the image of the state. And that you just can't sit idly by and allow these things to happen."

More from Nissen, who obviously knows rednecks to a T

Indeed, we may finally have a perfect storm, with Arpaio's racial-profiling ways energizing Latinos, and his profligacy with the people's money and his dereliction of duty in the sex crimes fiasco pushing Rs and others to vote against him.

Before Penzone entered the elections building to deliver his early ballot, he was asked what he thought his chances were for Tuesday.

"I think my chances are exceptional," he replied. "Not because I feel that way, but because of the response that we've seen. This is a non-partisan race. My history has spoken to public safety, public service.

"People have treated me with respect and come on board to support me. And the growing support is definitely going to make the difference for me...on Tuesday."

Penzone was cheered on by supporters as he and Woods went to cast their ballots.

Afterward, as Penzone and Woods walked back to their cars, I couldn't help but wonder Woods' opinion of "Chenal-gate," the scandal currently plaguing state Attorney General Tom Horne's administration.

"I can tell you that never happened under my administration, and I'm pretty sure [never] under [former Governor and one-time AAG] Napolitano's administration," he stated.

I asked Woods if he thought Horne should resign.

"I've stayed out of all that whole mess," he said. "Let's just wait and see what happens. I've got enough problems now with Arpaio, who's going to be on my ass, again. But it's fascinating."

Folks always joke to me that I must want Arpaio around, otherwise, what would I have to write about?

The answer is, a lot.

Arpaio's misdeeds suck too much oxygen out of the atmosphere. Plenty of other corruption goes ignored in Sand Land, just because it pales in comparison to the constant stench over at the MCSO.

On the plus side, Penzone is a solid candidate, and Arpaio is weaker than he's ever been.

The Baby Ruth floating in the pool, alas, is Stauffer. That pie-faced chump is the one thing that could muck things up on November 6.

Unless, that is, he pulls more votes from Arpaio than Penzone, assisting the latter to a win, an irony that Stauffer and Sheriff Joe richly deserve.

Too little too late by Woods and his fellow R's. They should have been out talking this up and on TV a month ago on this issue if they were serious.

I don't know anybody who voted or is going to vote for Arpaio this time. NOBODY! Not one single person.

This story is a paid political advertisement by the campaign to elect Paul Penzone.  He will go to great lengths to attempt to get elected. The winner has already been declared as Sheriff Arpaio, just you wait and see.

Oh the irony that is Scottsdale Lieutenant Mike Stauffer and his relationship with the Phoenix New TImes!

Stauffer just might be the spoiler in this race for Maricopa County Sheriff and the real irony will be the blood that is on the hands of Phoenix New Times and it's loyal readership.  It wasn't long ago when PNT lauded Scottsdale Lieutenant Mike Stauffer as the next Sheriff of Maricopa County.  There were numerous stories praising his platform, his integrity, his tenacious 'can do' attitude, his campaign manager.  He was given an open mike of sorts on this very blogsite for a QandA with the PNT faithful.  It was blissful, this relationship.

From the beginning I was against the candidacy of Mike Stauffer.  Repeatedly I stated he was a foolishly weak candidate and lacked the tools necessary to defeat the juggernaut that is arpaio.  Each of you scoffed, berated, ignored each of my talking points-

He was unable to raise money and all I'd hear was "money isn't everything"  "elections aren't bought"...

He is a horrible public speaker- "We don't want another camera happy sheriff, we want someone who works."

He remains employed with Scottsdale PD..../crickets.

The problem is, each of you gave Scottsdale Lieutenant Mike Stauffer hope.  Each of you praised his integrity, his work ethic, his courage.  Now, you scoff and berate and minimize.  Lemons calls him a fraud and a sham yet it wasn't too long ago when it was discovered by the PNT that Stauffer's campaign had paid for facebook 'likes' (the only barometer used by PNT readership as a measurement for success with Stauffer) that Scottsdale Lieutenant Mike Stauffer came to the PNT and stated it had been a mistake which he purported to own.  There were blogs and comments showering this guy with accolades for his honesty.  This is the Guy!!!

Lemons and his boyfriend, dennis gilman, were previously sharing spit with Scottsdale Lieutenant Mike Stuaffer and now have nothing good to say about the guy.  Don't forget, it was Scottsdale Lieutenant Mike Stauffer who broke the story regarding Marty Atencio.  Lemons and gilman have made Atencio their Swan Song, and ironically it's Mike Stauffer they have to thank.

Those percentage points Stauffer steals from Penzone?  Each of you own them.  They are yours.  They are the ones you each gave up by jumping on the Stauffer Band Wagon.  He had no business in this race.  I repeated that over and over and each of you ignored it.  Now own it.

You all were drunk on the spoils of defeating Russell Pearce and got lazy when it came time to gear up for arpaio.  Jerry Lewis was the PERFECT candidate to defeat Pearce.  No one else could have done it.

Each of you tried to paint stauffer as teh next Jerry Lewis and refused to listen to me.  Now it's your fault for what will most probably be a lame duck term for Arpaio in the next four years.  You think he was vengeful and vindictive before?  STAND BY!

@yourproductsucks Lemons never supported him. There was that one video he and Gilman did with MS but they did one with Penzone as well. Lemons was on his case for him to get out before anyone.

@Flyer9753  @yourproductsucks actually, he does have a good point though. as long as there is fighting between the Penzone and Stauffer camps, joe is retaining the majority (although it its a lesser majority than ever before) of voters. as long as we keep to the "anybody but joe" approach....we are losing votes to one another. the race needs to be a 2 candidate race to beat Joe, and we all cant get together as a united front against Joe. so we are handing Joe a possible victory by not dropping the "anybody but joe" approach and instead taking a "Penzone instead of Joe" or "Stauffer instead of Joe" approach (i prefer the Penzone approach). just like in roulette, you need to make a single choice. either pick red or black or a number, you cant just slap down a $20 and say "anything except for zero" and  win. there is no way to win with "anything but zero".

Which is exactly what Joe setup and wanted. I will hand that to him, he read the election winds correctly and put his fix in early enough to make a difference.

Hopefully turnout will be high enough to make a difference.

wherewasi

@danzigsdaddy  He's referring to Jerry Lewis of Mesa who successfully outted Russell Pearce from the State Senate in the recall.  A high caliber opponent with what it took to beat the Ornery Old Angry White Man of Mesa.  That was not a race that could be taken by "anybody but Pearce" as much as this is not a race than can be taken by "anybody but Arpaio".

@yourproductsucks by the way, i am a little confused as to your "jerry lewis" comment. could you explain it a little better? do you mean it as in a clown mugging for the media more than joe? or something else? (this isnt being sarcastic, i am just not sure what you meant)

danzigsdaddy
danzigsdaddy topcommenter

@yourproductsucks it may not be what you meant, but i still stand by it. i firmly believe everyone is in such a rush to oust Arpaio that they are trampling each others chances. without unity and with out organization they are killing their chances. Arpaio has lost a lot of support, but not even close to a majority of it. as much as Arpaio is hurting himself with stuff like the birther issue, he is his only opponent, because with us bickering with each other, we are ignoring what needs to be done. we have the same goal in mind, we just all want to take a different route to where he already is

wherewasi
wherewasi

@yourproductsucks  My only regret is that David Gonzalez did not decide to take Arpaio on.  I voted for Penzone, as did everyone that I know well enough to ask.  I guess we'll know on Tuesday whether it was enough.  Honestly, I won't be surprised either way.  I truly believe that Arpaio knows Penzone is nipping at his heel.  It will depend on the voter turn-out.

yourproductsucks
yourproductsucks

@danzigsdaddy  Actually, thats not what I meant at all.

There needed to be a viable candidate in this race  to capitalize on the momentum gained after the Pearce recall in order to defeat Arpaio.  Neither Penzone nor Stauffer are capable of the feat.  It would have required a "Jerry Lewis-esque"  candidate, one that was a BETTER version of Arpaio.  One that could siphon votes from the Arpaio Faithful.

This was the best opportunity to defeat Arpaio, and it was squandered away.  The CBA proved to be a one trick pony that blew their wad after the recall.  Now parraz is nothing more than an irritant at board of supervisors meetings as he attempts to bully pulpit his wife onto the board.

The backlash on sb1070, the mishandled sex cases, Hendershott/ Black/ Fox fiasco, Marty Atencio..all squandered for the net result of nil.

Arpaio will leave on his terms now.  He has won.  He will continue laughing in the face and poke fun of stephen lemons and the DoJ as neither have so much as made a scratch on Arpaio.

So it gets a pat on the head for saying what the rest of us have known and been saying for a long time?

That's why I said what I said. Everyone has known for a long time that Stauffer is there to siphon votes away and do exactly what you state and stating the obvious that has already been stated by others time and time again is not going to get a pat on the head for stating the obvious and restating what has already been said.

While it may be a good point it's an old point that has been stated before, it get's no credit for that. Repetition is easy.

@wherewasi David Gonzalez was exactly the caliber that was necessary.  You were the first to employ such an idea, I will grant you that.

@yourproductsucks  I tried to set the standard high.  I was told that kidnapping David Gonzalez, hog-tying him in my den and forcing him to run for MCSO Sheriff would likely result in criminal charges against me, and I didn't want to end up at 4th Ave...

yourproductsucks
yourproductsucks

@wherewasi My point has always been that the goal to defeat arpaio had to be taken more seriously and the immediate bandwagoning for stauffer initially was a huge mistake.

Standards for an acceptable arpaio opponent needed to be set high from the get go.

y'all settled.

wherewasi
wherewasi

@yourproductsucks  You make some very valid points.  The thing is that until Penzone stepped up to the plate, there were no other challengers to back.  I do recall a discussion between you and me and perhaps a couple others, shortly after Penzone said he was going to run, where you said that you felt that Penzone was a better candidate than Stauffer, and I asked you why.  At the time, I said that at least Stauffer had made his positions clear and that we knew next to nothing about Penzone and he didn't seem to be making much effort to inform us.

I do agree that early on, the support Stauffer got gave him hope, but as with all things in life, circumstances change.  There had to have been a point a LONG time ago when Stauffer realized he could not win.  He should have stepped down then.  Instead, he let his ego prevent him from keeping his eye on the prize: an Arpaio-free Maricopa County.

I guess I will personally accept whatever "responsibility" I have for votes that Stauffer gets.  Just like I accept whatever "responsibility" I have for my ex husband's alcoholism because I didn't clean out the bank accounts before he got his cash for his damn liquor.

You said he was never supported Stauffer outside of the video interview.  The above statement from Lemons contradicts your statement.

Bacon4Breakfast
Bacon4Breakfast

@yourproductsucks  @Bacon4Breakfast Why don't you quote the rest of it, you lyin POS. Even Mickey Mouse wld make a better sheriff than Joe. REad on. It ain't no endorsement. Stauffer wasnt even on the ballot:

"I have met and like both Penzone and Stauffer, and either one of them would be an improvement over Arpaio, obviously. Problem is, in a three-man race, Stauffer and Penzone split the anti-Arpaio vote.

Only in a one-on-one contest will Arpaio be beaten. And he is weak enough to be beaten come this November.

Which means either Penzone or Stauffer will have to bow out, if they really care about defeating Arpaio in the fall.

Otherwise, get ready for another four years of corruption, abuse of power and clownish shenanigans from crusty ol' Sheriff Joe."
