Joe Arpaio Triumphant and More Wreckage from Election Night

For the victor, he had a message:

"Not to be disrespectful to the sheriff, but shame on you, that you have put your ego and your pride and things like that ahead of the needs of this community. You have a chance to rectify that. And I hope you do."

Some Penzone supporters I know of in the CBA and Adios Arpaio camps were disappointed, even angry that Penzone conceded, rather than wait for the count of the EVs and the provisionals..

But considering that Penzone was down by double-digits when the initial EV count was released last night, I think that anger is misplaced. If some miracle occurs with the remaining ballots, great. But it's delusional to expect a serious candidate to hold on indefinitely.

Also, the wash of red over the state in general, indicates that this was not our year to take down Arpaio. Penzone was a good candidate, but he was faced with a numbers game that did not favor a Democrat from jump.

In Arizona, Obama lost by nearly 12 points to Romney, as of last night's count, more than the 8.5 points by which he beat favorite son John McCain in 2008.

Democrat Rich Carmona, a candidate with a life story and a record a Republican would drool over (and many did), lost to GOP golden boy Jeff Flake in the U.S. Senate race by 5 points.

And in Congressional District 9, Democrat Kyrsten Sinema is just barely maintaining a lead over one of the worst Congressional candidates in recent memory, Teabagger Vernon Parker.

None of these races indicates that Penzone's loss was anything but what it was, par for the course.

It always was a David and Goliath battle with the sheriff's race, with Goliath spending millions in feel-good TV advertising and one particularly nasty attack ad.

What Penzone had raised as of the last campaign finance report, around $527,000, would be outstanding for any normal county sheriff's race.

But our David faced a national figure with a money-raising operation pulling in dough from ancient right-wingers from sea to shining sea.

And luck was not on our David's side. Penzone's primary challenge from John Rowan and the presence in the race of third-wheel goofball candidate Mike Stauffer hindered fundraising efforts.

As I reported in my October cover story on this race, many contributors were wary of putting money into a campaign where a three-way match favored the incumbent.

The only good news I can find is that the Republicans have lost their supermajority in the state legislature. The Dems didn't get the 15-15 state Senate tie they wanted. Still, they picked up seats, largely due to redisrtricting, and now have four more Senators, giving us 13 Dems to 17 Rs.

In the House, by my count, Republicans lost some ground as well, leaving a 36-24 split, advantage GOP. (Though as with all of these results, these are not final.)

So Arizona moderates, but slowly. You're not going to turn Ari-bama into Oregon any time soon. Probably not ever.

Plus, the best man, or woman, doesn't always win, as we know.

Still, that's no reason to abandon the fight. Peoples lives count on our efforts. And we have made great progress, with the backlash to Senate Bill 1070, and the recall of the the state's number one bigot, former state Senate President Russell Pearce, as well as his defeat in this year's Republican primary.

Former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas has been disbarred, and far-right-wing Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu was denied a Congressional seat, when forced to withdraw his candidacy after an expose into his exploitative relationship with an undocumented Hispanic male by my colleague Monica Alonzo.

These are real accomplishments, but they are only the beginning.

And what choice do we have, but to battle on?

None, really.

The macro question, Is this the Arizona you want? 19% fewer people voted, why? A one party dictatorship listening only to Herrod and turning into a theocracy. The biggest county ruled by a buffoon of a sheriff. Education grossly underfunded. Private prison advocates running the Capitol. A completely clueless governor. Scottsdale cronies appointed to most offices. Thank providence the voters were smart enough to can "judicial reform". Remember anything out of this governor and her puppet masters called reform, will be guaranteed to screw the majority of the citizens. Until either a generation dies out or more people vote, this Arizona is what you get.

@redvoter, you are such a nearsighted moron it is ridiculous. Not every liberal is gay or a drug addict. I would also like to point out even though Joe won again, every year he loses more and more votes because people realize he is as moronic as every other conservative. Soon all that will be left of his supporters, will be old, racist, homophobic Nazis, and they'll all be dead soon. Also the gun laws in this state are horrendous, no wonder there are so many murders. Lastly, God isn't real, there is no he'll for the rest of the country to go to, and when you die nothing happens.

I LOVE to hear you liberal pot smoking, gay marriage proponents, anti family, anti white people, God hating liberals cry. Hussein Obama got re-elected so here's my advice; Take your same sex partner up to Colorado and do your drugs and do  your "partner" from behind, and LEAVE AZ. We are a RED state that worships the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, frowns on drug use, illegal aliens, same sex "marriage", and abortion. The rest of the country is going to hell, but here in Az, Maricopa county, we have God, Joe Arpaio, Jan Brewer, and our fire arms.

It's funny that NewTimes spent all of their ink for four years on defeating Arpaio and nobody ever read a word. But, NewTimes remains the best fish wrap in the state. Keep it up!

The problem is you have a ton of old racists in the Sun City area that pay almost no taxes. They don't give a crap that the fat douchebag costs the rest of the county money, they just want to feel "safe" from minorities.

The only hope you Dems have in Arizona is to get another Govenor.  One who will work with state legislatures to limit the number of years a sheriff can run.  One who will not let out of state residents vote in local matters.  Until, that happens the Republicans will own the Democrats.  Sad, Sad, Sad.  My heart and prayers go out for you.

The good news is Obama is our president again and he will appoint fair Justices into the Supreme Court.  The bad news is Joe Apraio is your excuse for a sheriff.  Someone needs to investigate and see if like Ohio, the Romney's have any ownership in the voting machines.  If so they need to challege the results.

On a bright note, I was thrilled to see that Michael Kielsky took 26% of the vote for Maricopa County Attorney.  With no real campaign expenditures, advertising, etc., he sent a pretty strong message to the Poodle.  Congrats Michael!

Bill "Do You Like My New Pocket Protector?" Montgomery said "If you don't like me, vote for someone else."  And we did!  Imagine what could have happened if there was actually a campaign for Kielsky!

It's frustrating to think that he actually could have been defeated if the Dems had run -and promoted - a viable candidate.  What the hell is wrong with the Democratic party?  How could so many Republicans, especially Tea Party candidates, run unopposed by the other primary party?

53% voter turn out in Arizona.

What the HELL is WRONG with people?

On the East Coast, they were casting ballots with flashlights because the power is still out.  Somewhere in the Midwest, a woman dying of brain cancer hired an ambulance to bring her to her polling place to cast her vote.  Elsewhere a pregnant mom in labor stopped to vote on her way to the hospital.

Are Arizona voters really TOO DAMNED LAZY to cast a ballot?  For pete's sake - you can sign up to get a ballot in the mail and send it back postage paid by going online and signing up for permanent early voting.  IT'S EASY!  Are you too pathetic to pick up a pen, mark some arrows and walk to the freaking mailbox????

Are Arizona voters really SO DAMNED APATHETIC that they think their vote won't make any difference, so why bother?  If that's you, then you're part of the problem.  A BIG part of the problem.

It angers me that the Dems are so beat down that they don't even bother to put anyone on the ballot.  It angers me that the Independents don't want to be associated with the Ds or the Rs, but also don't bother to step up and make a difference.  Let's just hand the State over to the Tea Baggers and be done with it, you Wusses Who Refuse To Stand Up and Be Counted.

Does anyone know where I can find the party platform breakdown of the voter turn-out?  I want to know what percentage of Dems, what percentage of Reps, and what percentage of Indies and "other" actually bothered to show up.

And if you didn't bother to vote, F all y'all.  Quit whining about what others did not accomplish on your behalf.

Disappointed, but not surprised that Arpaio is still here to antagonize us. It's really f'd up that he's already threatening us with running again in 2016.  I suggest we start now asking David Gonzales what it will take to get him to run against the dumbass.  What IS funny is that Arpaio spent more than $7 MILLION - yes, $7 MILLION to win with a mere 53%.  That means that even after spending $7 MILLION, 47% voted against him.

The VOTERS have let us down - repeatedly.

The DOJ has let us down - shamefully.

I'm not holding my breath for Mother Nature and Father Time to take care of the matter for us.

I am working dilligently on my own solution.  I will let you know when I am done.

Unfortunately, at the moment I am fresh out of "eye of newt".

So, on one of the other boards, a few of you were discussing who "Joe Arpaio Fan" might be.  Somehow, (I wasn't really following the search) the name Robert Vanderstock was thrown into the mix.  I do believe that was a hit.

Do you guys that have been out here for a while remember "Bobby" - ?

Bobby was an annoying little pain in the ass for a long time, but he kind of disappeared this summer.  Around the same time, there were several posts by "guest" and other names that we said, "Yeah, whatever Bobby ..." to.  During that same Bobby-went-missing period, there were a few posts on New Times by Robert Vanderstock and RJV619 (or some number - don't remember what it was).  I have also found posts as recently as today on other sites by Robert Vanderstock that use the same wierd language that JoeArpiaoFan uses (such as the libs can start "weeping" - who buy JAF would use the word "weeping"?)  Anyways, "Bobby" disappeared, Robert Vanderstock and RJV showed up occassionally for a while, and then suddenly JoeArpaioFan appeared.  Bobby on (what he thought was steroids) meth.

JoeArpaioFan = Bobby = Robert Vanderstock

I found a couple of listing for Robert Vanderstock in California.  It seems to me Bobby said he was in California, or at least not in Arizona.

Go for it, you guys that are better at internet sluething than I am.  Let's out the little snot nosed bastard.

 @seekingjustice2

Ok, well, I guess that answers my previous question.

Did anyone watch Anderson Live today at 4:00 on Ch. 5?  Megan McCain was co-host(ess).  She is actually rather interesting.  Perhaps we should recruit her to run for Governor.

I say that rather tougue in cheek, but ... hey, she's for legalization of marijauna and she's for gay marriage.  Sounds like a hell of a lot of open-mindedness to me, for a Republican!  And she is well spoken, unlike our old hag of a Gov, GED Jan.

The GOP is imploding.  It started in 2008 when people who liked McCain (the "RINO") but hated his running mate Palin (the "Tea Bagger") and vice versa, could not rally behind and support their team.

It has been much more heated in the past couple of years.  The Phoenix Mayor race was a great example of how the Dems put forth ONE GOOD candidate, and the Republicans put forth 5 very different candidates.  The R's bickered for weeks over which of the 5 was the best, and ended up with the worst going against the one strong Dem.  How'd that turn out for you, Baggers?

Now, in light of the party split between "RINO" and "TEA", they're at it again and have been for months.  I find it facinating to read blogs at conservative sites and see the infighting between people who claim (falsely) to be on the same side. They couldn't even agree on Flake v. Carmona.

Face it, you "R's" - You are truly two very separate and distinct parties.  The Tea Baggers are NOT really Republicans.  They are extremists who are trying to run their agenda on the Republican coffers, and the true "R's" ("RINOs") are pushing back.

The GOP really needs to have a Come to Jesus meeting (shouldn't be too hard for you Conservatives!) and draw a line in the sand.  There needs to be a new party - the Tea Party - separate and distinct from the traditional Republican Party.  And may the best party win.

BTW - The NRA LOST practically every race it focused its funding on. The NRA is a project of the Military Industrial Complex.  The same investors which profit from the manufactures and sales of weapons to our Military also are the same investors in the companies which produce weapons for sale to the public.  They have the same agenda - more profits from weapons sales.  Follow the money and WAKE THE FUGK UP.  The NRA and the investors in the companies which make up the Military Industrial Complex are NOT friends of the United States - most of these corporations are multi-national in nature and have no allegience to the US or its citizens.  They just want to sell weapons to us - if that means starting a war or other violence and making the resident idiot gun nuts go off about "Der takn er guns", all the better.
