Democrats Up Sleaze Ante Against Jerry Lewis in LD 26

LD 26 chair Randy Keating says Lewis has been "telling lies" about Ableser

There should be some law of the political jungle that says if you call someone a liar, you at least have to say what the lie is.

That was my first thought on seeing a recent e-mail fundraising appeal (after the jump) from Randy Keating, chair of the Legislative District 26 Democrats, who are gunning to boot Jerry Lewis from the state Senate, and promote state Representative Ed "Mr. 40 Percent" Ableser to Arizona's upper house.

The fundraising e-mail starts off by making some generic comments about how "they" are playing "rough," and are "blanketing" LD 26 with "ugly attacks."

Moreover, "the press" is playing up the "myth of the moderate senator," and is obviously in the can for Lewis.

Lewis: A class act all the way...

Keating claims Ableser and his running mates, House candidates Andrew Sherwood and Juan Mendez, can't match the Republicans in cash. Well, they might be able to, if they weren't running, ahem, "clean."

That claim seems pretty disingenuous, considering that an independent expenditure committee calling itself the Arizona Accountability Project has dumped $75,000 into robocall and mailer attacks on Lewis in LD 26.

Ds have a registration advantage over Republicans in the district, so you've got to figure that Ableser must be some really weak cheese if it takes such a colossal effort to get him over the hump.

After a bit of rambling, Keating makes the following unsubstantiated charge:

"While Jerry Lewis was telling lies about Eddie yesterday, D26 volunteers made 9,000 phone calls to tell voters the truth."

This is exactly why we need Open Elections to pass (Prop. 121). Polls indicate the proposition is in trouble. 'Secret' IE money has flooded the state and has doomed this very important good-government initiative. Take about lies!!!! Both parties have lost their way. Who knew Joe Arpaio may very well be the poster boy for why we desperately need Top-Two primaries!!! As an AZ taxpayer, it makes me sick that my tax dollars goes to fund our now corrupted primary system. Chalk up the loss of 121 as a huge victory for extremists!!! GRRRRRRR!

I can tell you that people deserve the truth and are tired of dishonest political ads. It doesn't matter which side puts them out. The flyer was dishonest and now we are calling Jerry Lewis a luer while refusing to point out one lie? This is a sad day for democrats.  Keating needs to resign and let someone with integruty take his place.

Where are all the libtards like donna grate-on-your-nerves-house defending their boy Eddie? Why so quiet when the Dems are caught red-handed lying about their opponent?

Ed Ableser's attendance and voting would get him fired from a job in the private sector, it would give him an audit in any class and for want of a better word he is guilty of truancy. Now he wants voters to put him back in office? Why? Ableser is more like Pearce than is comfortable. He believes he "deserves" the position and that it is "his" by right. Ableser (and Pearce) say and do anything to stay in office, forgetting about truth, honor, transparency, accountability. Bye, Ableser. It is time to write your dissertation and become a professor who constantly cancels class.

Also am very disappointed in Andrew Sherwood for being a part of this chicanery and skullduggery (shout out to Tom Ryan).  Less than a year ago, Sherwood was working hard to get Jerry Lewis elected and singing his praises.  Either Andrew is a horrible judge of character, or he's disingenuous.  Shame on you for being a part of this, Andrew.  You know what the right thing to do is.

I agree with Susurro that Jerry Lewis is an absolute hero for taking on Russell Pearce and doing it with dignity and character.  Arizona could use more leaders like Jerry Lewis.  If the Democrats had a shred of brains or class, they would have given Lewis a break at least for one session.  He was the difference between having Steve Pierce as President of the Senate and Andy "Pearce Lite" Biggs.  Would serve the D's right if they defeat Lewis and as a result end up with Senate President Steve Smith.  Ableser would become so irrelevant he wouldn't need to show up.

This is nothing new from the Democratic Party.  As you can see from the posts below, there are some pissed off Dems because you dare question the means at the jeapordy of the end.

You just happen to like this particular Republican.

I'm not sure why Stephen Lemons has taken up this particular race to fret about and find it rather curious.  Nothing new in this particular race or campaign at all.  My mail box has been flooded with campaign literature including all from these two, as I live in the district.  I recall a couple of really nasty mailings about Mr Ablesner a couple weeks back,  so it is untrue that there have been none.  I wish I could quote them but I have thrown all away as soon as I look them over.  I've been too focused on replacing our horrid sheriff to pay as much attention to the other races as I should have.   Mr Lewis, who I voted for last time, and Mr Ablesner, are both big boys and can take some heat and can take care of themselves.  it is the nature of the game.  The old "if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen"  seems to apply here.

Thank you Stephen Lemons for calling out both sides of the aisle when they do corrupt things. I'm more impressed w/ Lewis every day.  To stay out of the mud when so much is being thrown at him is really remarkable.  He has won my respect.  And probably my vote..

I have no problem with disagreement on facts and issues.  But unsubstantiated accusations of "lying"?  About what?  Shameless behavior by some who are advocating for Ableser.

@dennis20 Jerry Lewis misrepresented himself as a moderate when e voted for 11 of 12 Center for Arizona Policy bills. He lied about his representaton, stating on his campaign Facebook that he is the Senator for LD26 and that he represents Tempe and Mesa. He knows full well he is the LD18 senator and represents only Mesa. I am overjoyed that Tempe voters saw through Steve Lemons' hero worship and Laurie Roberts' malarky. Jerry Lewis curried the favor of the self-desribed  tea-party caucus, voting for a majority of their tea-party legislation, and then tried to pul the wool over the eyes of teh voters in the new LD26. I'm proud that my district chose the better person. Ed represents the progressive values of our District and he won BIG last night, despite your smears and obvious bias, Steve.

 @chadsnow

Chad, many of us worked in the Recall, along with Andrew. Lewis was the clear choice over Russell Pearce and he was far more moderate on issues of immigration. than Russell. But he is running in a new district, and it is a progressive district. Jerry Lewis' voting record is far too extreme for LD26. That is wny he lost. Case in point: Lewis co-sponsorsed the Bill (it passed but is being challenged in the courts) to defund Planned Parenthood's health care services for women. No one in LD26 attacked Jerry's character. The mailiers focused on his VOTING RECORD. And the mailers did not say that Jerry endorsed Pearce. They were aimed at the LD26 Republican slate of candidates, at least one of whom had endorsed Pearce.

Note that Jerry's running mate, Mary Lou Taylor, launched a certificable character attack on Rep-elect Juan Mendez right before teh election. The most negative (verging on racism) mailer of the silly season. Now  Lemons ignored it, as he ignored Andrei Cherny's racist mailer of the past, because he was lobbying on behalf of other candidates.

@chadsnow I hear Sherwood was a reluctant participant, and Ableser was the main one pushing for the dishonest characterization of Lewis.  Sherwood is a good guy.  Would like to hear him say it publicly, though.

@chadsnow You are awfully judgmental about Ed, who has been a champion of our community. It is absurd for you to expect that our LD would vote based on the anticpated outcome of the Republican's caucus vote for Senate President on the day after Election Day.

LD26 voters chose the candidate that would best represent our values, and that candidate was Ed Ableser.Jerry does have dignity and character, but he did misrepresent himself on his @SenatoryFB site, claiming to be our current senator and representing Tempe. And he did imply on mialers and on his home page that Michael Crow endorsed him (unture). Sad that he chose that path.

@66rock I saw a piece where an independent group pointed out that Ableser has the worst voting attendance record in the Senate.  That is an objective, well-documented fact.  Lewis cannot legally control or coordinate with independent groups, and is not responsible for their content--even though the content was true.

Some of the attacks against Lewis, however, have been FROM the Ableser campaign, and have contained obvious lies and extreme hyperbole.  Saying Lewis is a "Tea Party Puppet" who endorses Russell Pearce is a laughable example.  Saying Lewis got $100k from lobbyists, when his financial report shows $40k, is another example of an obvious lie.  Independent groups have said Lewis "led the charge to cut education funding."  That is an obvious lie too.  Lewis was only in office for the 2012 session, during which they made NO cuts to education, and in fact put in an increase of about $60 million.

The issue is lying from the Ableser & independent campaigns, and Lewis is a victim.

@Susurro_Perforado Thank you for your reasonable response.  I do recall the "endorsing Russell Pearce" bit now that you mention it.  I too, found it laughable and one of the most absurd bits out there.  I am still curious as to why Mr Lemons has chosen this race to highlight as it does seem no more disingenuous, to me, than many others.  With that, I, along with everyone I'm sure, is just thrilled that the end of all this is near now.

@66rock Without pretending to speak for Mr. Lemons, the recall of Russell Pearce last year was one of the most interesting and dramatic pieces of political history in our state, and the role Lewis played was courageous and heroic.  It inspires some degree of indignation in any intimate observer of what happened last year to watch Lewis now be unjustly slimed with straight up lies.
