Joe Arpaio's Early Christmas Gift from President Obama and the U.S. Attorney's Office

The feds just gave Sheriff Joe carte blanche to break any law he wants...

So if Sheriff Joe Arpaio's deputies knock on your door this evening and arrest you on ginned- up charges because you happen to be a critic of the way the MCSO does business, the U.S. Attorney's Office and the FBI will look the other way.

If you're a law-abiding civil servant who just happens to work for a politician who opposes Joe and you're harassed by MCSO bullies because of it, count on the U.S. Department of Justice to sit on its hands.

You could be a state attorney general or a newspaper editor or a powerful county supervisor, but Arpaio and his henchmen have carte blanche to intimidate you or to pull you handcuffed into an unmarked car in the middle of the night or perp walk you on bogus allegations that are no more than political payback.

Maybe you're an average Hispanic citizen, sitting in your house, minding your own business when Joe's goon squad searches your home without a warrant and zip ties you and your 12-year-old son just because you're brown and live in the wrong neighborhood.

What will the guardians of your civil liberties do as law enforcement officers, operating under the color of law, conspire to deprive you of your rights under the U.S. Constitution?

Sure, they might take your complaint. Heck, if they get enough complaints from enough high-ranking politicos, they might even crack open a federal grand jury and drag in some witnesses from the law enforcement agency in question.

But don't count on them to actually make a case or bring charges. That's the kind of stuff that only happens in movies.

It's enough to make you want to go Ron Paul on 'em. What good are the FBI, the U.S. Attorney's Office, and the U.S. Department of Justice, of which the FBI and the USAO are both a part, if they cannot protect citizens from the repeated, criminal violations of rogue police agencies?

That's the main conclusion you can draw from the bomb dropped by the Arizona U.S. Attorney's Office at 5 p.m. on a Friday before a three-day weekend that it was ending its four-year investigation into "allegations of criminal conduct by current and former members of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office and the Maricopa County Attorney's Office."

The cowardice of this press release, signed off on by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ann Scheel, is colossal.

Amazing, spend more than four (4) years harassing one of the most popular sheriff's in modern time, elected and supported by a majority of the people only to finally announce you have nothing.

To bad they did not just give the money to local law enforcement to further public safety. Shame on the Justice Department.

Where's the same article condemning the feds dropping charges against Mary Rose Wilcox? Now that Arpaio has been cleared of wrongdoing, Mary Wilcox will be required to repay the settlement she received.

Arizona .... I grew up there .... I left there ... I miss the country side .... What I don't miss is  the sham of political players like Arpio and his cohorts. What the H*** were the DOJ thinking ?  It's time to look closely at the leadership and then do what Americans do: VOTE! I hail from the times of W and L, Legend City and Lew King .... This turn of events is truly disturbing !!!

Vote for Penzone!  Continue the failed ideas of the left and Democrats in Arizona.  Trust me, it will work this time.  If we get Sheriff Joe out of office everything will magically be fixed.

Note that law enforcement including the DOJ and FBI has no duty to disclose investigations.  In fact, just the opposite.  Law enforcement often keeps investigations quiet until the arrest, no need to tip off the perpetrator.  Are there other investigations pending.  Maybe?

The allegations in the recently finished trial and the pending USA v. Arpaio both support criminal civil rights charges under 18 U.S.C. §§ 241, 242.  No criminal investigation was closed concerning these crimes.

Closing the investigation as to the retaliation claims doesn't close the door on the bushel basket of stuff remaining.  Arpaio was not pardoned for ALL crimes.

Arpaio just used a felon police state crony as an expert witness in the profiling trial that just completed.  The ACLU was just fine with this expert.  What's up with that?

I can understand how distressing this news is for some of you.

Now you have to admit that the Obama Department of Justice is incompetent and/or you have to admit that the allegations were unfounded.     What to do???

Just get back in town from vacation and I hear about this....well, shit. Can't say I'm surprised though. I agree with Stephen, this is about politics, pure and simple. The longer the whole investigation went on, the more convinced I was that Obama and Holder would not do anything to Arpaio before the election. They've already shown a disappointing lack of courage and outright cowardice when it comes to confronting right-wing bullies and nutbags. They know that Arpaio would become a martyr to the right wing's base voters if he was indicted, further firing them up and sending them to the polls in droves to destroy Obama's reelection chances. Forget "unlikelihood of a conviction," this is about saving their own asses, period.

Sadly, I think that there are only two ways to get rid of Joe Arpaio at this point: either vote him out of office in favor of Paul Penzone (a possibility that is looking increasingly remote, unfortunately, given Arpaio's huge war chest and Staffer's refusal to drop out), or just hang tough until Father Time can do the job. Let's be honest; Arpaio is 80 years old, does not appear to be in the best of health, and sooner or later we all have to meet The Reaper. The best we can probably hope for at this point, unfortunately, is that Arpaio is either not around to run for another term in 2016, or that the ravages of old age finally catch up to him and prevent him from doing so.

@scott.huminski Maybe a trade since at least one of ACLU's  "expert witness" should have "no standing" due to their felonious behavior too.  Exposing and prosecuting United Way and "Friendly" House for un-American nativist xenophobic behavior - this could unravel forever - at taxpayer expense.

Aug. 31, 2012 - This is a sad day for Arizona and its people, as it is the turning point for becoming a "prison state", one that no one will want to visit, work or live in. The societal shift will be huge. Soon one half will be paid to "control" the other half. This will no place for families and children who are the most vulnerable in a state that favors incarceration over education.

@getmeouttahere While you were out of town, which was the plan of those signing contracts that just turned Arizona into a "prison state", we are trying to determine who is more powerful in the U.S. -- the DOJ or the BOP. We got our answers on Friday as well. Arpaio / Thomas are more BOP than DOJ.

The 4 decades of failed War on Drugs who gains if there is no reform?

BOP and the prison profiteers / private prison corporation who created the War on Drugs "control" the nation and the state of Arizona. Very strange that at 5:30 Friday the Arizona Department of Corrections Director Ryan  (governor / defacto governor Chuck Coughlin / high ground lobbyist for CCA) signed the contract with CCA for 2,000 private prison corporation "beds" Arizona does not need. More than coincidental. Raising the question, who really is in "control"? Federal detention centers to house all those the GOP hates with Arizona as chief "prison state" for the nation. Leaving Arizona taxpayers holding the bag along with the liability and responsibility for out-of-state violent criminals, who belong in the states where they committed their crimes.  This is very sinister, sick and pure evil.

@StacyP Well said. Felt the same way, we just have to work harder to inform the voters. Arizona voters have to clean up the mess they created by electing Arpaio, Andrew Thomas, Brewer, Horne like concerned citizens did with Russell Pearce, Lester Pearce, Scott Bunghart, Ron Gould, Quayle, and their enablers. Arizona has taken the state back to the days of slavery. Its time to get these back-water hate mongers out of office and rebuild Arizona's tattered, shameful reputation.

@shoosoo You are mistaken if you think any civil rights were violated.  Since when is it a violation of Hispanic's civil rights to stop and question them if they are illegal if they violated the law in the first place to cause the traffic stop?  You should watch "Border Wars" on the national Geographic channel because ICE runs around nonstop apprehending drug and human smugglers 24/7 and each and every one of the people they arrest and/or question is Hispanic.  So, is what they are doing racial profiling too or simply enforcing our laws?

I usually do not agree with much of what you say but in this case you have a point.  When 99.9% of the illegal aliens in this state are from the same country so it is good police work and the truth and not profiling.  You would not pull over a black person if witnesses say it was a white person that committed the crime would you?  The illegals in this state are ...wait for it....mostly all hispanic.  So if the legal ones are upset they get stopped, then get on the illegals and have them self-deport.

those are numbers affected by the fact that they are singling out certain people. if we go by your numbers, they stop hispanics 1000 to 1. i know for a fact we have other country refugees who are not here legally. look to the 70's and 80's with all the cambodians and russian refugees. in the 90's we were getting chech, bosnian, serbian people in droves. there has always been some country where people have come here legally and illegally. did they all just decide to go back home? did every single immigrant decide not to move to maricopa county? if your numbers are right, ONLY hispanic's will come to maricopa county. with the MCSO only pulling over or zeroing in on hispanics, yes their numbers will skyrocket. you can get the same percentages by going to a high school and polling how many of the students are under 21 years old.
