Russell Pearce's $260K Reimbursement Bill Will Be SB 1449, Sources Say (w/Updates)

pearceboil.jpg
All patriots must act now to prevent this parasite on the body politic from scoring $260K of taxpayer funds

Multiple sources at the state Legislature are informing me that former state Senate President Russell Pearce's $260,000 "reimbursement" will be added as an amendment to Senate Bill 1449, which I'm told will be in Conference Committee today at 4 p.m. in the State Senate Building.

The bill could go to both floors of the Legislature tonight for a vote.

SB 1449 is state Senator Steve Smith's baby, a proposed statute seeking to add a primary election to the recall process.

I've had Republicans tell me that there are votes on the Senate side to kill it, but I do not think we can rely on that happening unless there is an overwhelming show of outrage over this insidious effort to hand a quarter of a million dollars to a disgraced, recalled politician.

The only bright side is this: If it passes, it will be an albatross around the necks of Pearce, Smith, and any GOPer dumb enough to vote for it.

Granting Pearce this windfall -- when the Legislature can't fund KidsCare, when education is cut to the bone, and when the state is still suffering from economic doldrums -- should be criminal.

It's worth remembering that the folks who want to fill a suitcase full of taxpayer cash for Pearce are the same ones who refused to extend benefits to the long-term unemployed in 2011.

Disgusting.

To contact the Pearce lackeys behind this proposal, see my blog from yesterday, which includes all the contact info.

For now, on to the Capitol. Stay tuned for updates.

UPDATE 8:09 p.m.: Have been busy following the murder-suicide in Gilbert involving former Pearce pal J.T. Ready, so I didn't make the hearing.

The Capitol Times has a general round up of what happened

Basically, state Senator Steve Smith refused to allow public comment and had Randy Parraz of the pro-recall group Citizens for a Better Arizona removed from the hearing.

There's no money in the bill, but it allows for reimbursement in the future, should Pearce apply for it. And you know he will.

A number of Republicans have spoken out against this boondoggle, so its chances of passage remain uncertain. However, fanatic Pearce-worshippers such as Smith will no doubt push this proposal to the bitter end.

UPDATE 5/3/12: The AP reports that the Pearce reimbursement bill seems finally to be kaput.

Love this quote:

Democratic Sen. Linda Lopez said she'd received more than 150 emails critical of the proposal, "and they're still coming in. People don't know it's not going anywhere."

That sound you hear is Pearce's bid for state Senate in LD 25 imploding.

I've contacted Steve Pierce who denies involvement with Pearce "refund". Have also questioned Steve Montenegro who talked in circles that contrary to what I've read or read, "asked" monies won't be allocated in the current budget. Has not answered questions re:who "asked" for this allocation or if it may be asked for again. No answer from Any Biggs or Andy Tobin as their stance. No answer from Brenda Barton who is a known proponent of Pearce refund what her stance is. Have thanked David Schapira, Rich Crandall and Sen. Leah Landrum-Taylor for vocally opposing this travesty. The no-response from Az legislators who pushed for this unconstitutional endowment speaks volumes. Amazing is how these elected officials feel they don't have to answer us. So much for transparency & accountibility. This doesn't mean I'm letting them off the hook. They have an obligation to keep us informed of their intensions. They need to tell us, we pay their salaries. They are public servants & they need to know they have to answer to those of us who've elected them to office. Hound them, demand answers!!!

From the AZ Republic just now:
An Arizona legislative committee on Wednesday passed an amendment that sets up a framework for recalled Sen. Russell Pearce to seek repayment for costs incurred during the recall election. If Pearce requests the money, it could lead to the state writing a check for about $261,000 directly to the former Mesa lawmaker. The bill still needs the final approval of both the House and Senate, and it's unclear if it has the votes. It is expected to be on today's agenda in both chambers.Read more: http://www.azcentral.com/news/...

They passed it now it has to go to the house for a vote.

How will the Snoring Alliance and that panty-waste Shane explain Pearce, $260k of money that's not his, and Pearce's long time brother, JT Ready, murdering 4 people today?

I bet Shane will hide his pointy head in the sand on the whole story.  And cry.  And change to an indie or a dem on his voter registration!

The SA folks wank each other over their love for Pearce.  They are the fringe...they are the much much less than 1%.

Funny to read them though, you can't make shit like that up.

They said on the news that on fb they are saying it was a cartel hit. The police say the shooter is in the house.

The railroad is running at the State legislature to reimburse Russell Pearce's "reasonable" campaign expenses. The debate is outrageous and disgusting.

How do you reimburse someone who spent ZERO DOLLARS? He didn't spend a dime of his own money, so nothing is owed. Pearce said he doesn't plan to reimburse the donors who paid for his recall. This is fraud any way you look at it.

Not a chance!  They wouldn't give money to Pearce until helicopters drop from the sky and babies are killed in predominantly Mormon communities.

this just in from KTAR...JT Ready is one of the dead in the Gilbert shooting..

Fox 10 says JT Ready was the shooter.  Killed the other 4, then himself.

Son of a bitch. This really sucks. I had heard that it was Ready and of course the first thing that popped into my head is the one of Ready and Pearce arm in arm at some rally and Ready's support for Pearce. I'm seeing that it's being confirmed on several stations that he was the gunman. Apparently there was a survivor.

What a day!  At AZC, Montini has a link to this story.  It will drive Pearce "buy-cotters" nuts!

Off topic but relevant: I heard that J.T. Ready was the gunman in the Gilbert shootings today. Do you have any info on that yet?

So, they could vote on this tonight?  I wouldn't be surprised if they gave it to him.  Isn't nighttime when, people are asleep, when they do their dirtiest work.  I cannot wait for November.  It just can't get here fast enough...........................

There will be hell to pay if this passes.  This is just incredible.

Of course the corrupt and mentally sick Republicans want to give narcissistic, corrupt and mentally sick Pearce a check for $260,000.

Pearce's out of state donors should be the ones liable for paying Pearce if he seeks the payment. Not Arizona taxpayers.

Isn't BS1449 the recall bill Smith wants to pass? The one that's unconstitutional? If BS1449 is deemed unconstitutional, so is Pearce's payment (not like Pearce gets to keep the cash. He needs to pay Sal Reza's wrongful arrest judgment personally.)

If this payout to Mr. Pearce is made law, can it be challenged in court and if so, who would have standing?

LD19 Resident
LD19 Resident

If memory serves, BS1449 is the bill that Steve Smith wants to pass making it harder to recall disgraced politicians like Pearce. A bill that a state Constitution expert says is illegal.

So, I guess that means that if the recall bill is unconstitutional, so is Pearce's payment.

Will Brewer have the balls to do what's right and veto this bill?

This is coming from someone who has did what's right for Arizona and owes her election to narcissistic, corrupt and mentally sick Pearce and who campaigned for Pearce during the recall.

I doubt GED Jan will do what's right.

Arizona Eagletarian

Unless the FALSE MEME is effectively challenged, no, she will not veto the bill. They wingnuts hold fast to the claim that they have a "constitutional duty" to reimburse Pearce. They will use that claim to feed their followers and justify ignoring protests over the payout.
