Joe Arpaio's Nemesis Sal Reza and His Bad News Bears Soccer Team

teampic.JPG
Esperanza's soccer team with its coach, Phoenix civil rights leader Sal Reza

There's not much that would get me out on a hot Arizona afternoon to watch a high-school soccer match, but Sal Reza as "coach" is one of them.

Reza, the bane of Sheriff Joe Arpaio and former state Senate President Russell Pearce, the guy who's led thousands in marches protesting both Senate Bill 1070 and Arpaio's anti-immigrant enforcement measures, coaches a co-ed soccer team for Esperanza High School, a small charter school in North Phoenix that caters mostly to the children of working-class Hispanic families.

Think of a Latino Bad News Bears playing futbol, and that's Esperanza, which means "hope" in Spanish. Reza told me it's the first year Esperanza has had a soccer team, and he was practically drafted into coaching, as the school could not afford a professional coach.

"I know nothing about soccer," Reza shrugged. "But nobody else would do it."

Despite the civil rights leader's inexperience, despite the impoverished backgrounds of many of the kids, and despite a run-in by one of their star players with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement last week, Esperanza came within one point of taking their division's championship on Monday, losing to rival Phoenix College Prep, 3-2.

That made for tough loss, especially since Esperanza had come back from a 2-0 hole to tie the game at 2-2, only to have PCP score a crucial goal and clinch the win.

Still, Esperanza wasn't even supposed to be on that field at Phoenix's Desert West Park where the championship game took place. The team started its season with a loss, one that depressed the players, until they were given a sign of sorts.

A hawk circled above the team following the defeat, and one of the kids asked Reza what it meant.

"It means you can either fly like an eagle, or crawl like a snake," he told the teens.

I realise this is off topic but while your blog looks nice
it would be far better if you'll be able to use lighter colors too in the
design. This will encourage a lot more readers come to check it out more often!

Great going Sal and the team as well

"...the guy who's led thousands in marches protesting both Senate Bill 1070 and Arpaio's anti-immigrant enforcement measures..."
That's funny.  Sal Reza stated he does NOT lead the protests.  Of course, this was after he made sure media was aware that "something was going to happen" and they needed to "stick around."  I guess he didn't deserve to get arrested...ever.

Bobby
Bobby

Honest to God, these phony people that support the Sal Reza's of Arizona and Reza himself, are such a joke as far as being decent citizens of this country. They know that wearing Mexican uniforms in the U.S. and being constantly inundated with that culture isn't going to help them here, despite what the phony so-called TruConservative and his ilk say. Even that moron knows that there was ill feeling when others did this, but he won't admit it. They know there is a vast undercurrent of anti-American B.S. pushed onto these kids by clowns like Reza, Grijalva, and so many others in the racist Mexican power groups, for their own selfish politcal reasons. They also know this  will not help these kids in this country in any way, but they simply don't care.

Huh? Sal helped organize the protests, I don't think he would dispute that, though he probably doesn't want to take credit for what was a group effort.

Re: being arrested, he wasn't arrested at a march, he was arrested (on purpose) outside 4th Avenue jail in an act of civil disobedience.

The next day, he was wrongly arrested and imprisoned by the MCSO in an act of blatant retaliation. County Attorney Rick Romley (a Republican) refused to bring charges.

Sal is suing on that one, and he likely will win enough money to buy everything YPS owns and everything his family has ever owned, several times over.

It's called "winning" YPS. Sucks to be you.

Sal already settled on 'that one.'. He didn't get Mary Rose money...
If he's the baller you make him out to be why didn't he spring for the uniforms?

Bobby

Reza is the typical evil bullshitter and instigator, that causes trouble, (we all know these kinds of people) then sits back and watches the crap come down on everyone else. I've watched this moron operate for at least five years. "I didn't do it", is their standard reply when someone gets hurt. A--hole.

Wrong. The suit on the July 30, 2010 arrest is still active.

Maricopa County Tax Payer
Maricopa County Tax Payer

You do work for MCSO don't you?  It's interesting that you would bring that detail up on a bogus charge the court threw out already.  Were you one of those stupid deputies that arrested Sal for some bogus charge? You're an expensive idiot. You cost the county lots of money. The incident wasn't a march. Sal was across the street but you idiots couldn't stop yourselves.  Dumb cops like you make lawsuits easy.

Bobby
Bobby

Yeah, he costs the county a lot of money but not your millions of foreign nationals illegaly in Arizona and the rest of the U.S. Good argument and again, an indication of how and why Arizona is fucked up. It has nothing to do with American citizens, but idiots that diss American citizens in favor of other cultures. Yes, America has a distinct culture morons.

Just pointing out that Sal Reza is a liar. It's all available for public consumption. Quit whining Bustamonte

Bobby
Bobby

P.'S. My final comment, on the comments I got is, I DON'T in any way blame the kids. Kids are kids. Reza and those that supplied the Mexican flag uniforms must admit they don't have the kids best interests at heart, here in the U.S.

GreenHornet
GreenHornet

Red, green and white are also the colors of the flags of the following countries:

Algeria
Belarus
Hungary
Iran
Italy
Lebanon
Madagascar
Oman
Wales

Actually, Mexico has more colors than red, green and white, since there's the coat of arms with a brown eagle, etc.

And the bird mascot for Esperanza is not an eagle. Surprised Bobby didn't note that the name of the high school is in Spanish, which surely makes it some sort of commie pinko haven, in Bobby's eyes.

Bobby
Bobby

It's all about American citizens, and their dumb views, isn't it? It's hopeless, and like the movie night of the living dead, most of the posters here are zombie like in their defense of everything Mexican, and their offence at everything U.S. When the shit hits the fan, they'll still blame American citizens.

Bobby
Bobby

O.K. whatever. I already made the distinction between what so many, NOT ALL, Mexicans do and everyone else like the Irish, Italians, Germans, etc. With these people it's a some time thing, with so many Mexicans, LIKE REZA, AND HIS ILK, it's an ALL TIME, EVERYDAY, EVERY YEAR, EVERY DECADE THING. If these people are so damn enamored of Mexico, why in the hell don't they just go and live there?

Also, Hornet, I always read on this and other forums, how people are trying to exclude Mexicans, etc. What people!!! They are doing this job by themselves quite well. Some of you people seem to have so little knowledge of human nature, and yet you have so much to say about people who notice these things and are bothered by them, which run into the millions. But, who cares, right? The Sal Reza's will go merrily on their way as proud Mexicans, everyone else be damned. Honestly, don't some of you people get it? You can keep calling everyone racist or bigots, in the light of this kind of behavior, but it's only you that are going to look odd. Assmiliation is the way. When in Rome do as the Romans do, if you want to get along, or expect strife, and divisviness. Not rocket science.

Bobby
Bobby

I don't hate anyone. I do however hate some of the things they do. For example. Shoot guns into the air during cinco de mayo. Celebrate some party till 4;30 am, while screaming and breaking beer bottles, stealing , and in general, having a bad ass attitude, that impresses no one but themselves. Does that answer you question?

GreenHornet

Is that why you hate 'em, because they're in your hood, Bobby? Cry me a river.

GreenHornet

Have you ever been to a St. Paddy's Day march? Is everyone wearing a shamrock a traitor to this country? How about Irish bars, or folks who wear Kiss Me I'm Irish Tees year-round? People wear other nations colors all the flippin time. Know why? Because we're made up of a bazillion different nationalities. Expressing pride in your ethnicity, nationality or heritage is something that happens across the board. It's not confined to Mexicans. You're being ridiculous, Bobby.

Bobby

Bobby's Daddy
Bobby's Daddy

Poor Bobby. He didn't have a role model that taught him right and wrong like Sal does for these kids. He also didn't have anyone give a fuck about him enough to teach him things like manors or self respect.  He's jealous no one cared about him like Sal Reza does for these kids. All Bobby got from his dad was racism, fear  and abuse.  Thats what happens when no one cares.

david saint
david saint

LMAO no Bobby, the tea party and everyone else who wants to throw these kids out, no matter if its to the streets of Mexico simply because of what their parents did years ago, doesnt sell that idea. If they had their best interest at heart, they would find a solution to make them citizens of the only country they have ever called home.  Not cast them out as rodents.

Bobby
Bobby

What has that got to do with anything I've been discussing? I haven't mentioned throwing this kids out, nor have I done so in any of these blogs. Your emotinally charged language, shows that you have wholely  swallowed leftit ideas, without thinking through their consequences. Whether you babble on incoherently about Tea Parties, or Nazi's or trailer trash, will not make one bit of difference, when the shit hits the fan, because of what you falsely believe is a problem American citizens have on these issues. The problem isn't the thinking of American citizens or their beliefs about their own country. You keep thinking that freedom is equal to the right to abuse those who are citizens here.

Bobby
Bobby

It's actually very funny. According to Bnbk, it's all about skin, yet if this picture is accurate, Reza is whiter than I am. You people have and continue to express quite clearly, what your'e all about, Mexican nationalism, etc. and that's fine, because as David Saint said, "at least it's still a free country and therefore,at least Americans should know where your'e coming from.

david saint
david saint

IM not about mexican nationalism..im white, american, and am proud of it.  However, your racism is seeping through Bobby. You assertion that im any less american because i support individual freedom, or anyone else for that matter, makes no sense, sounds racist, and frankly does not best represent our country. Thats fascism at its finest.

Bobby
Bobby

I don't care if your'e white. You can be as wrong as other whites, you accuse of being wrong, I never mentioned anything about white, YOU DID.

Bobby
Bobby

Your'e racism is seeping through. You are American in name only. Supporting individual freedom is a misrepresentation of the subject. It's about the United States and its symbols. You are clueless, if you think that the constant show of a foreign cultures symbols, including the constant support of thoe symbols is going to come without serious reprecussions. Who will you blame then? You are either so politically naive, or not caring enough about where this stuff is going, that it's almost useless debating this with you.

Bobby

Yep, there's nothing as uplifting as a bunch of kids supported by U.S. taxpayers, and wearing sport uniforms with the colors of the Mexican flag. It brings tears to ones eyes. Sal Reza is a true patriot.

Who cares, did you miss the part about the uni's being donated? Besides, its still a free country. Further, when you go out and do volunteer work without being paid to help kids out, then you might, might have some room to talk.  Until then however, maybe you should think about doing something that contributes to society other than sitting around your trailer watching jerry springer re runs.

Bobby
Bobby

Where are you sitting around, La Raza headquarters? Try seeing for a change, that there are American kids, whose flag is the red white and blue, and who might feel a little offended, though according to you it's all just fun and games. Examine yourself, in the context of being a citizen of this country for a change, and try to understand the feelings of people who believe in the symbols of their country, the U.S. Will you try to do that for a change? Your'e so good at explaining the need of Americans to understand all of the symbols of Mexican nationalism and the rest. Why not try to honestly understand and admit that there is another side to this situation, the American citizen side, that has its own symbols, just as Mexico has theirs, in Mexico. It's probably beyond you.

Giving you the benefit of the doubt, if it were true that none of the many first generation Italians you knew had parents that didn't speak English, that does not mean that my account is a lie.  I suspect I have had many experiences you have not:

The love of a good woman,

The admiration of his children,

The camaraderie of his community,

A basic mastery of the English language.

Just because these have eluded you does not mean those who speak of them are lying.

It just means you are, as always, a loser.

Bobby

Stupid is trying to get away with idiotic lies like you do. I'm not as stupid as you no doubt look.

I went to grammar and high school with possibly hundreds of Italians. I was friends with at least half a dozen. I went to their homes as a kid. I never saw this fanatical display you talk about. In fact, most Italians I have known, don't want anything bad said about the U.S. and are some of the best citizens this country ever had. All of them knew English excellently. That is why I know you are full of it.

Bobby
Bobby

And you are in Arizona why? If it's such a disgusting place to you, why not move back to Jersey, which indeed is a disgusting place. Again, you are not a conservative but a leftist clown, that advocates for another nation. Cut the b.s Americans are getting rerally sick of two faced double minded clowns like you. Question. What business do you run that uses illegal labor?

TruConserv
TruConserv

Hell yes they complained about English only!

I come from a family of civil servants.  Everyone in the community knew who was the German speaking lady who worked at the utilities office, and the Italian lady at the DMV, and on and on.

Many of my friends parents, and most all their grandparents did not speak English.  They worked union jobs where it didn't matter.  They made decent money, paid taxes and participated in the community.  Heck, you go back to Jersey and you'll see fifth-generation Italians who display their heritage every day.

You know who didn't complain about government workers speaking something other than English: the English speaking community.

We accepted that part of the great American experience was letting people come here and assimilate at whatever pace they could. If it took a generation -- so be it.

Of course, those immigrants were white.

I come to AZ and see pretty much the same thing, but in brown bodies, and suddenly its an affront to George Washington himself for anyone to speak something other than English.

The reason the country calls AZ the land of the sandbillies if because people like you are so bloody transparent - and guys like you are just plain ol' bloody (CF: JT Ready.)

Bobby
Bobby

I have seen this to. I totally agree with you. That's not the point. With the people you mentioned it's exactly a "sometime", keep this concept in mind, a SOMETIME, thing. With people like Sal Reza, and so many obviously Mexican nationalists, like the p;eople that post here, IT'S AN ALL TIME THING. It's Mexico, and Mexican stuff, all the time, everytime, all year round. Don't believe me, just read these blogs regularly. And the Irish, Germans, and others you mentioned, didn't do things like complain about English only, illegal immigration, ethnic studies, and on and on. Right? Fair enough?

david saint
david saint

I do understand there are two sides to everything, do you? Further, to say I dont support this country simply because I support their right to wear whatever they want is assbackwards.  Is this not a free country? To say they cant, or shouldnt wear something simply because we dont like it is not what America is about, and i think you have been far too consumed by the vitriol from the right. Not everything must be American, whether we like it or not...that individual freedom is what makes this country great. Take that for what you will...

TruConserv
TruConserv

I grew up in a heavy immigrant, blue-collar community. At various times we had Italian flag uniforms, Irish one, German ones.  The local parish had ethnic festivals, and the affiliated schools played an important role n those events.

No one whined then.

Why are you whining now?

So, which is it - are you a bigot or just an incompetent practitioner of the English language?

Bobby

They don't have to wear Red, white and blue. But apparently they did have to wear red, white and green. Get real, and stop trying to convince people of what their own eyes tell them, OVER AND OVER AND OVER....

Bobby
Bobby

Don't talk to me about hatred and bigotry. Many Mexicans, including yourself, have demonstrated their hatred and bigotry towards European-Americans, over and over, while marching in America's beautiful cities with signs reading, this is our continent, white people go bakc to Europe, etc.etc. You and others that hate European-Americans, cannot hide this fact, it's all over the net, all the time. Mexican nationalists living in the U.S. aren't capable of hiding their hate for American citizens--including you.

Bnbk

No Booby, what it's proof of is,just as your hero RuSSell Pearce, you make veiled  bigotted comments with the hope that people will not be intelligent enough to see through them....."There's nothing as uplifting as a bunch of kids supported by U.S taxpayers, and wearing sports uniforms with the colors of the Mexican flag. It brings a tear to one's eyes. Sal Reza is a true patriot"......This is what you came up with after reading this story ? So in your opinion Sal Reza is not a patriot because his teams uniform colors are green, white and red ? You assume that this team is being supported by US taxpayers, while ignoring the fact that the Esperanza's team uniforms and other costs were picked up by Mr. Alcock. That the coaching duties were picked up by Mr.Reza.....You would not have mentioned the colors of the Mexican flag if you did not assume that the kids were Mexican. Just because some one has brown skin does not mean they are from Mexico. Have you ever heard of any other countries below our southern border other than Mexico. What if all the kids were wearing red, white and blue? Would that be ok with you Booby? Would you assume that they were 'American" kids,Booby? How would you know that they weren't wearing the colors of the flags of Cuba,Costa Rica,Puerto Rico,Dominican Republic or any other country that has those colors in their flags,Booby ?.......It seems to me that you are the one full of shit Booby. As hard as you may try to conceal your hatred and bigotry toward Mexicans by proclaiming "your" idea of patriotism, your bigotry will always find it's way into your comments. The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Go ahead Bobby, take the first step.........Just look at yourself in the mirror and say,I am Booby and I am a bigot.

Bobby

Is anyone, ever, on this forum, on the side of American sensitivities? It seems not.

Bobby, what the hell would you know about being an "American?" Have somebody read and explain the inscription on the Statue of Liberty. Join the military and see how intolerant you are of others in your unit when the bullets are heading your way.
Actually, you are the antithesis of what it means to be American.

Eleanor Holguin

You're right, Bobby. I just get so sick of your rhetoric I just read into it. I apologize.
You don't know how I feel and I don't voice that. I have very mixed feelings about how things are and I don't always agree or disagree with either side.

I understand the laws and how they should be abided by but I also can understand human compassion but not to the point of draining resources from legal citizens of the US.
