Barack Obama's Shame: DREAM Activists Rally Outside Phoenix ICE Office as Part of National Day of Action

Another DREAMer, calling Obama out...

It can only be described as a massive violation of human rights, what this country has done to deny a future to an entire generation of individuals, who for all intents and purposes are Americans.

I'm talking about the hundreds of thousands of bright, undocumented youth who would qualify for a pathway to legalization under the DREAM Act, individuals whose lives are in limbo and who must deal with the daily risk of arrest and deportation, all because they were brought to the United States while they were young.

Their predicament should be familiar to all. Indeed, polls consistently show widespread support for the DREAM Act, which would grant some form of legal residency to students brought to the United States from other countries while children. This, if they meet certain requirements, including either going to college or serving in the military.

Heck, even here in the Land Time Forgot, where being brown is an open invite for the cops to hassle you, 73 percent of registered voters approve of the proposed legislation.

But for those of us who do not fret about proving our right to reside in this country, it's easy to forget the unjust circumstances DREAMers have become used to, like living in fear of being stopped by law enforcement, and dealing with the fallout when they are.

Edder Martinez, at yesterday's DREAM demonstration outside the ICE offices in Phoenix

The hardships DREAMers must endure weighed on me as I talked to about a dozen of them outside the Phoenix offices of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Thursday.

Symbolically dressed in graduation garb, they were there as part of a nationwide day of action in support of the proposed law, which remains buried beneath the cynical political calculations of both Republicans and Democrats, including the President of the United States.

Take the experience of Edder Martinez, whom I met at Thursday's event. Martinez, 21, told me that he was born in Mexico City and was brought to the U.S. when he was five. He said he considers himself to be as American as his younger brother who was born in the states.

Rather than have a Dream Act, the parents of these wetbacks should be prosecuted for child abuse.  Depriving a child of his homeland and nationality is nothing less than that, to say nothing of the dangers to which children are exposed treking through the desert, being smuggled in cargo holds, or being held hostage by coyotes.

Our country desperately needs more hard-working, determined students. Hearing the stories of the DREAM Act students really cures the American arrogance that has gripped much of the country. They're so talented, yet so humble despite their challenging circumstances. Those kids are a real inspiration.

Ahhh, the hue and cry of the liberal ignorami. Bitch and complain about Obummer now and trip over yourselves to vote for him in November. It is true that you get the government you deserve.

From today's editorial in the AZ Republic where they endorsed congressional candidate Ron Barber:  "It may be time to uncouple the elements of comprehensive immigration reform and look at what can be done piecemeal.  He mentioned the alternative Dream Act being offered by Republican Sen. Marco Rubio and a guest-worker program."

I hope Barber crushes "immigration hardliner" Jesse Kelly!

I am a Latina and one of my Blog's missions is to support passing the Dream Act.
While I fight constantly to support the Dream Act's passage, I believe these students' protests are misguided and the Tea Party Republican extremists will capitalize on their attacks on our President.
President Obama and his Administration have valiantly tried to pass the Dream Act. They were almost successful in 2010 except for the Republicans and 5 Blue Dog Dems who defeated it.
The reason for the high rate of deportation is primarily due to:
1. High rate of Republican states that have passed racial profiling bills like sb1070 and have targetted Latino neighborhoods for arrests.
2. The Obama administration / ICE have reduced the time in Detention Centers/Private Prisons and moved to deport more quickly than the Bush Administration who pandered to private prisons and demanded 180 days in their $100 a day private prisons of their private prison cronies.
3. In 2011, the Obama administration has updated their policy and only deport the felonious criminals and are not targetting students or workers.

Anyone who believes Romney will make these conditions better is not listening to what Romney supports sb170. He said on DAY ONE of HIS Administration, if the Dream Act has been passed by Obama, he will over rule it. He said he believes in 100% Mass Deportation/Self Deportation. Kris Kobach is on his team and said the only way that Romney can pass his new version of the Dream Act is if ALL the students self-deport FIRST.

PLEASE, Dear Dream Students, Read what they are saying.
We MUST Support our President. If we elect him again and elect a Democratic Congress, they will Pass the Dream Act AND Comprehensive Immigration Reform.

If you want to protest, then protest in support of Passing these vital, vital bills.

 Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

"It can only be described as a massive violation of human rights, what
this country has done to deny a future to an entire generation of
individuals, who for all intents and purposes are Americans."

In this economy?  With majority of college grads unable to find ANY work?  Much less work that allows them to pay off their student loans?  These people have suffered MASSIVE VIOLATION.

Obama's SHAME?

Yeah, he can't get enough traction from Treyvon type issues to survive the backlash should he step on his brethren for something that should remain a DREAM until USA born of all persuasions have FULL GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT WITH WELL DEFINED CAREER PATH.  Perhaps his staff is still trying to calculate his number of AAvoting supporters vs. how many illegal DREAMers will vote for him.

That is NOT prejudice.  We ARIZONANS are NOT PREJUDICE. It is COMMON SENSE.  Exactly what developmental milestones did you miss in your formative years Stephen Lemons?

I agree and have stated this over and over again;  These kids are as American as Apple Pie.  They grew up studying about George Washington, The Louisiana Purchase, The Manifest Destiny and the 3 branches of Gov't.  They mostly likely have NO CLUE about Guadalupe Hidalgo and the Mexican Revolution.    I asked a DREAMer once, to recite the pledge of allegiance and she did so beautifully and when I asked about the Mexican national anthem she didn't have a clue.  That to me was proof enough.  As you put it, Stephen, for all intents and purposes; THESE ARE AMERICAN KIDS.

Good article but I think we are blaming Obama more than we should.  Obama wanted to sign the bill. Romney never will. McCain flip flopped. So did Flake. It still passed with a large magority. The republicans abusing the filibuster is the problem.

So if a parent robs a bank to "better the lives of their children" then that is OK and the children should be allowed to keep that stolen money

Yay! for the DREAM Act! Those that oppose it, have no clue what they are missing on. Sure there is many U.S citizens that are talented individuals. But DREAMers are not only talented but determined and hard working individuals as well. They have values that (sad but true) many U.S citizens lack. Sure they're parents brought them here illegally and all that. But think about it for a second, would you do nothing, and follow the "law" if your very own children were suffering from starvation, and excruciating circumstances? For some, going to a different country, is the only way out.

I believe that if we let DREAMers become legal residents and eventually U.S citizens, they will give so much back to our country and make it that much greater.

P.S For those of you who still believe that undocumented people just come here to work and get "free" stuff from us. Let me tell you, my mom works as a tax preparer, and more than 50% of her income comes from these same undocumented people that come back year after year to pay their taxes. There is something called the ITIN number (Individual Tax Payer Identification Number), which is, just like a SSN but starts with a 9. This is what they use instead of a SSN. And there is more. Since most undocumented people get paid with a W2, they are paying taxes throughout the year. Many would need to receive pretty generous refunds. But (obviously, because they are not supposed to be here they don't qualify for many credits. So, as you can see, no only do they pay taxes, but they pay way more than any U.S citizen.

Those signs look like they were put together by 3rd graders...or worse, entitled college grads. The cause is a noble one, the delivery leaves much to be desired. If that's the work product these kids are representing, I'd say they'd not be worth the energy to fix this problem. Their parents work ethic obviously skipped a generation.

Maybe Biden will go on national TV and pledge his support for the DREAM act, thus forcing Obama to support it also.

oh please!  offshoring our jobs after we paid to keep them here is a massive violation of our human rights.  student loan debt is calculated and conducted in a manner that is a massive violation of human rights.  how the banksters are stealing homes, cars and everything else they can get their hands on daily is a massive violation of our human rights.  honestly I have no idea why dreamers think they are going to have it any better and I honestly have no idea why you as journalists cannot bother to write about the crimes being perpetrated on US citizens en masse but go worrying about strangers who broke our laws to begin with.

As badly as Obama has done on this issue, what do you think Romney would do?

Dee, the reality is that then presidential candidate Senator Obama promised that he would pass "comprehensive immigration reform" within the first 100 days of his administration.   President Obama and the Democrats held the majority in both houses enough to pass cloture and a filibuster.   President Obama and the Democrats did not "valiantly" try to pass "CIR" in 2009 because they were concered with other matters. They ignored the cries of the immigrant community.  After the death of Senator Kennedy, and the rise of the tea party, the Administration capitulated.   The Adminstration did try valiantly at the end of 2010 to pass the Dream Act, but it was too late.  Several Democrats voted against the Dream Act as you correctly indicate.

SB 1070 and other type of laws came about because the Democrats and President Obama created a political vacumn with regard to immigration, and the Republicans took advantage of it.

At the end of the day, neither party has a great chance to ever again control the presidency and have a majority in the both houses of the Congress. CIR must be resolved in a bi-partisan manner.

In the interim, the Dream Act advocates and students must continue to advocate and call out the Administration until action is taken.   If you were a Dream Act student, and you lived day-to-day in fear of being removed from the U.S., you would be on the streets too.

Jose,
You and I disagree. You are entitled to your opinion.
I believe you are wrong.
The ANTIs, now the Tea Partiers have been around for decades. The KKK and White Nationaists formed the Minutemen who begot the Tea Partiers.

John Tanton is the godfather of the ANTI Immigration zealots. He's been advocating his hate since the 60s. He formed F.A.I.R. and sponsored Roy Beck in forming Numbers USA. These are the authors of sb1070 and the other racial profiling laws. Go google Roy Beck and gumballs and see how they are rallying their troops against multiculturalism. Tanton said in the sixties that Black and Brown people were "uneducatable" and their numbers had to be reduced. That is the basis of their argument.

They have gained a foothold with the Tea Partiers.

We Humanitarians who support the Dreamers need to understand the history of all of this. This goes back even farther to the history of Immigration in our country starting with the Chinese Exclusion Act and the Immigration Act of 1924.

We should not be fighting amongst ourselves. We should ALL be advocating for the passage of the Dream Act and CIR and support our President in this fight. Remember, he strongly tried to pass the Dream Act in 2010 but EVERY SINGLE REPUBLICAN voted AGAINST it. Six turncoat Democrats also voted against it.

We need to stand strong. Vote Democratic in 2012.
I'm not going to give up because I beleive if we vote a Democratic majority in 2012 in both Houses, the very first agenda item is passing the Dream Act. The 2nd, passing CIR.
We will not be satisfied with anything less.

Say, can I enter Mexico illegally, go to school there and ask for all the perks of being a citizen?  No?  Perhaps Mexico and the US Schools can institute some sort of exchange student program whereby the benefits of both systems are the same.
