SB 1070 Protest March Led by Puente Starts at 3 p.m.

picresized_march.jpg
Puente's parade route for today

It's like 2010 all over again, with the Phoenix-based civil rights group Puente leading an anti-SB 1070 protest with a "march route [that] exposes collaborators in Arpaio's human rights crisis."

As you can see on the map, the demonstration begins at 3 p.m. at Phoenix's Civic Space Park, 424 North Central Avenue, and will make stops at Phoenix Police Department Headquarters, the Sandra Day O'Connor U.S. Courthouse, the Fourth Avenue Jail, Sheriff Joe Arpaio's offices at the Wells Fargo Building, and the offices of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Puente, which was responsible for massive demonstrations in 2010 against 1070, is now helmed by veteran organizer Carlos Garcia, who had this to say in Puente's press release:

"With SB1070, Arizona declared a war of attrition on immigrants. What was started in Arizona quickly led to the Arizon-ification of this country, one that treats undocumented immigrants as criminals and treats all Latinos as undocumented. Instead of investigating and suing in Arizona, the Administration should stop collaborating in deporting Arpaio's victims."

it doesn't matter where you are from all we ask is that you immigrate to our country legally.

I'm not sure what the big deal is here.

SB 1070 first requires a lawful stop. Exactly 100% of the time when I was pulled over by the police they asked me for ID. To the 1070 bashers... what should our police do when they pull someone over and they have no ID, no insurance, they speak no English, they 'forgot' their SSN and the hospital they were born in, they won't say where they live or whose car they are driving... you tell us.

It seems very reasonable that they should be entitled, when practical, when reasonable suspicion exists, during a lawful stop... to inquire about immigration status.

All this outrage over what seems to be such common sense just doesn't make sense.

Essentially, what you are saying is, "Even though the law itself is reasonable, even though the law forbids racial profiling, even though Arizona is simply enforcing existing laws, even though Mexico has much, much harsher rules.... I am against 1070 because, come on, we all know the police can't be trusted... we all just know they're a bunch of racists who will use this to abuse Hispanics..."

I am fully against SB 1070, but I get pissed at these marches, when the organizers use some of the people like pawns, and have them get arrested. It does NOTHING positive when you offer up kids and people who don't know better to be arrested. I know it's not the criminal charge of the century, but it just seems wrong. Also, the protesters screaming at PPD, last time I checked, PPD is NOT the enemy. The dudes I know who work there think the law is just stupid, and pretty much choose not to enforce it. I wish organizers of these events would take better care of the raza and not encourage them to be arrested, as it does NOTHING for their cause, except now you have a kid with a criminal record.

Seacrest out.

if they continue to "pretty much choose not to enforce the law", they'll be looking at lawsuits from the people that they work for. the designers of sb1070 have seen to that.

the federal government will continue to release the illegals turned over by local law enforcement, I see no reason to think that will change. it's just that after the good supreme court ruling, they won't return to arizona upon their release, preferring to settle in sanctuary cities and states. as far as arizona law goes, the desired result is a decrease in illegals within our state and sb1070 already has done that and will continue to do that.

of course, california and other like-minded states will eventually have to answer to their citizenry as to why they're being forced to bear the burden of all the illegal aliens, but that's their problem, not arizona's. I'm sure that the very smart people in sanctuary states who vote for the open-border politicians and policies will be willing to shoulder the costs associated with their convictions, why else would they vote the way that they do?

The arguments just made are essentially arguments that would "cut the baby in half" for not following the letter of the law or letting someone drown in a pond because a fence surrounded that pond and had a sign on it that said: "No Tresspassing". The law contrary to what these zealots are saying is not: "black and white", if it were king Solomon would have chopped the baby in half.

Real Mezcans can tell time by the Sun Indian style. Sun up means start working your  stoop labor  job, and sun down means quit working your stoop labor job. no watch needed.

Well, unfortunately for Garcia, he proves the point. Being in the United States without proper procedure is a criminal act therefore violators of this law are, technically speaking, criminals. I believe that it has created a serious strain on the system. I am an American and while I realize and appreciate the fact that the United States was 'started' by immigrants there is a procedure in place (granted it could be updated and made a bit easier) that is required for all people wishing to relocate to the US to go through. By allowing undocumented people into this country without proper procedure is a violation that impedes on the rights of those who are from here. It is a serious burden to the taxpayers to support someone not legally here.

I'm sorry illegal is illegal...it doesn't matter where you are from all we ask is that you immigrate to our country legally.  If you break a law prepare to face the consequences.  To me this isn't a racial question, this is about breaking a law.

Thank you Stephen for once again keeping us up to date !  Hate fueled racism being used by right wing extremist republican politicians is a horrendous act and....unfortunately a tried and true tactic of sick, power hungry leaders that will stop at nothing to achieve power even if it means provoking the hate, suffering and killing of other human beings !  One has to look no farther than Arizona to see that.
This same type of crime against humanity ocurred in Rwanda because of the same kind of hateful desired craving for power by the leaders of that country.  We shall non-violently re-take our beloved state of Arizona for love and humanity and expose the twisted and sick hate of politicians like Arizona governor Jan Brewer, former Arizona state senator Russell Pearce and Maricopa County sheriff Joe Arpaio so that one day...people will marvel that crimes against humanity could ever occur in a beautiful state like our beloved Arizona.
