Paul Babeu Supports Gay Marriage and Gays in the Military

Dennis Gilman's raw footage of Babeu's Saturday presser

In addition to Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu's admission to being a gay man during a Saturday press conference, wherein he denied allegations published in my colleague Monica Alonzo's expose concerning deportation threats against his ex-lover, Babeu made progressive statements on two issues of great import both to the LGBT community and to social conservatives.

Specifically, he supported both gays in the military and gay marriage, in response to a line of questioning kicked off by Phoenix videographer Dennis Gilman.

In regard to gays in the military, Babeu, who served a tour of duty in Iraq with the Arizona Army National Guard, spoke passionately about the issue.

"I believe that any American who wants to serve their country," he said, "and put on the uniform of our country to protect our liberties and freedoms, they should be allowed to do so."

On gay marriage, which is banned by the Arizona Constitution, Babeu tried to cop a "Ron Paul" line that it is "a states rights issue," while also stating that, "legal contracts absolutely should be allowed for anybody."

Pressed on the subject, Babeu characterized any attempts to limit the rights of gays to marry as un-American.

"If states prohibit that, that's the issues for the states," he replied. "I can be a supporter and get out there and articulate as we progress as a culture and as a society that there should be individual liberties and there should be individual freedoms...[for] any other person to define someone else's relationship and to say that it's not OK, that is not who we are as Americans."

However, it seems unlikely that Babeu would have taken the same stand while running for Congress in the conservatively-drawn CD 4, if Alonzo's story had never been published.

While it is excellent progress for Paul to go from hiding in the closet to waffling about gay marriage, and he did waffle by only saying he supports "legal contracts" and did not explicitly state that he supported gays having the same right to the same state sanction marriage license, he is still trying to play both sides of the fence.

He is financially and openly supportive of candidates who are virulently anti-gay.  Or at least he was before he was caught with his pants down.

He also needs to stop with the states right business, he either believes that gays have the same FUNDAMENTAL rights as straight people or he doesn't.  Gay marriage is no more a states right issue than women voting or slavery.

This is NOT a gay vs non-gay issue with Babeu. Its about his lies, threats and total lack of ethics and morals. If "Jose" had been a female, Babeu's actions wouldn't have been any less despicable. I am amazed how Babeu  is able to tun this into a gay rights issue and deflect his pure and total evilness. Arizona Republicans are nuts for buying this bullshit!

Looks like a game of who-is-the-butchest, among Republican candidates for this office, or for any other office.

What a laugh.  At all of them.  Not with them.

"However, it seems unlikely that Babeu would have taken the same stand while running for Congress in the conservatively-drawn CD 4, if Alonzo's story had never been published."  Bingo.  If everything had gone according to plan, he would never have gone near the subject with a barge pole.  He claims he's never pretended to be straight, but that's just false.  He's in print denouncing homosexuality in 2002.

He has a brother who's openly gay (also with a Mexican partner), but he learned early not be follow his example.

Anyway, his when-all-else-is-lost embrace of SSM casts a new light on his March 17, 2011 comments on the possibility that he himself might marry.  He didn't actually say it was a woman he might marry, but most readers, I suspect, took that to be his meaning.  That's one kind of deception -- free will or not, he knew he wasn't going down that alley.  But could he have had an esoteric meaning in mind?  Was he secretly raising the possibility that he might marry another studboi, even a transnational stud?  (He was still in the relationship with Jose at the time.)  If so, that's another kind of dissimulation.  Either way, not exactly the kind of bracing "honesty" that's gonna make rightwing Republicans pony up more money to keep his little traveling circus going. The interview is in Clifford J Fewel, "'This is my time':  Sheriff Paul Babeu speaks of love, smugglers, pedophiles, politics and striking while the iron is hot," Pinal Ways (Spring 2011), pp. 6-8, 10, 51-56, 58-59.  (The whole interview is worth reading.)At page 56:PW:  Do you hope one day to marry?PB:  Ah ... one day.  It's not certain.  (Nervous laugh.) Sometimes it's something that I may want or desire and then other times it's the last thing that's on my mind.  Because I've got 110 things that I've got to get done.  I never want to predict, 'This is my future." If you had asked me some time ago, I would never have guess in a million years that I would be the sheriff of Pinal County, Arizona.  It's how life changes.  This future is a beautiful thing.  It's something that is unknown.  Part of it, yeah, I think we have free will and choice, but at the same (time) I'm open to what the future brings.  Whether personally, professionally, all of that.

Babeu in no way supports gay marriage. He was VERY careful what he said in that interview. He is trying to say that States can decide whatever they want. Notice when he was first asked about it, he went on and on about protecting and respecting religious freedoms - even though that has nothing to do with the civil contract of marriage from which comes ALL the thousands of special rights.

Bullshit! He said he favors gay marriage for sure. Get the cracker crumbs out of your ears and mind -- and babeu's "7 1/2 inches cut" out of your butt. .

Yes and a versatile top, too. The time spent with Matt Heinz was strictly professional. Body cavity searches and prostate exams. Strictly professional. All the comments from the Matt Heinz facebook page have disappeared since this morning. It gets more interesting every day.
