SB 1070 Critic Daniel Patterson Discusses 1070 Repeal and Ethnic Studies Ban

Videographer Dennis Gilman and I drove down to Tucson on Saturday to check out the Arizona Democratic Party's winter meeting, held at a local high school there. Among those we chatted with was state Representative Daniel Patterson of Legislative District 29.

Patterson spoke of efforts by Dems in the state Legislature to repeal both Sand Land's breathing-while-brown-statute Senate Bill 1070, as well as House Bill 2281, the state's ethnic studies ban.

Today, state Senator Steve Gallardo held a press conference at the Capitol to announce Senate Bill 1218, which would strike 1070 from the books if passed. Patterson was there with other Democrats to support the effort.

Patterson used to go head-to-head with ex-state Senate President Russell Pearce in committee back in the day. Indeed, Patterson's questioning of Pearce was once so intense that Republicans stripped him of his committee assignment in retaliation.

You are indeed mistaken. And aside from tourism, there were many other effects most hidden in board rooms where Arizona was passed over as a place of potential business with no comment. But there are quite a few really obvious disasters.

For instance, in the last few months Honeywell was awarded a $100 million contract by the City of Los Angles on the conditions that no workers from Arizona participate in any of the contract work and that the person in charge of the contract move from Arizona. That's $100 million worth of lost jobs for Arizona on one contract, and I bet you weren't even aware of it.

Now...the cynical part of me knows that they're (the triangulating) are doing this move for repealing the "driving while brown law" and ethnic studies because of the president's upcoming visit to Arizona and his apparent draw down on deporting the people who clean toilets, make beds and pick tomatoes. The president is trying to "play nice" now with the latino population in order to say: "hey compadres I'm not going to deport your loved ones anymore (who have been for years obeying laws and paying our taxes) in record numbers.
Please...latinos... vote for me even though I have been treating you like sh*t for the last 3 years. Well...you know what...whatever it takes, just like Bill Clinton suddenly acting like a democrat again and getting back his religion when the whole Monica Lewinsky scandal nearly got him thrown out of office. If the president and the democrats will just follow through, I'm willing to give them a chance but let's just hope this isn't for public consumption.
