Joe Arpaio Targeted by Republican Paula Pennypacker in Purple Letter Campaign

Paula Pennypacker kicks off Purple Letter campaign to BOS Chair Max Wilson

The problem with the opposition to Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, as I see it, is that the loudest voices calling for Arpaio's resignation are perceived to be those of leftists.

In reality, there are many GOPers that I hear from who are weary of fellow Republican Arpaio, his wasteful spending, his persistent malfeasance and his illegal targeting of his political enemies.

However, few are willing to go public, for fear of retaliation and the grief they're sure to get from other Rs.

Which is why I applaud Republican activist Paula Pennypacker and her new "purple letter" campaign calling on Arpaio to resign.

Purple letters are missives generated by PurpleLetter.org to politicians, public figures and so forth, whom the writers want to impress with their message, and the color of their correspondence

You compose the letter on the site, then the site sends a letter on purple stationary in a purple-highlighted envelope, one the recipient cannot ignore.

In her most recent recent blog, Pennypacker describes the reason for the color to none other than Randy Parraz, leader of Citizens for a Better Arizona, which led the successful recall effort against ex-state Senate President Russell Pearce and is now seeking Arpaio's resignation.

It's great to finally see a "strong" Arizona woman rise up and speak out!  Unfortunately, most GOP women are lemmings and puppets for their puppet masters.

Great idea but here is the problem I have with this entire discussion.

What does it matter if someone is right, left, center or pink purple polka dot?

This is not about politics, this is about undeniable facts that show a long history of abuse, malfeasance, outright lying, evidence destruction, overspending, lack of accountability, etc.... etc... etc... The list of facts goes on and on and on and the facts themselves, without all the name calling are undeniable.

The fact that our elected officials, who are supposed to be supporting the law (all of them) are doing the exact opposite and rationalizing that it's ok to do that because of the results is sickening.

And let's look at those results. Many many other Law Enforcement officials and agencies do the job, all of the job, without violating the very laws they are sworn to uphold, or costing the taxpayers they are supposed to be working for millions with their mistakes or any of the other undeniable facts that show Arpaio is not doing the job he is supposed to be doing. Not saying no one makes mistakes, not at all, but competent professional Law Enforcement officers learn from their mistakes and adapt as needed.

When we let politics get in between us and the laws that are there to protect all of us, no one wins, we all lose.

Have we as a society sunk so low as to put our petty differences (right, left, center, etc...) in front of the very thing that makes us who we are and the country that helped lead the world community into the 21st century?

Or were we never really there to begin with....

Monday I spoke to two Sheriffs Deputies in the Superior Court building. They were very sincerely supportive of the Sheriff saying their methods of arresting have not changed for over a decade and they are better trained, equipped and supported all thanks to Sheriff Joe. They sincerely love the Man.

Ms. Paula Pennypacker, you are in a seriously deluded state, because you actually believe you are a Republican. You aren't even close.

Dennis --

It took running for office last year for me to finally see the light as to what was going on in my party. In 2010, you could of had the intelligence of a ham sandwich, but so long as you had an endorsement from Pearce and Arpaio -- and beat the 1070 drum -- and did as you were told -- you got elected to the state legislature.

The post on this blog from "Not surprised" cuts to the quick of the problem with the AZGOP.QUOTE:"The real problem here is the money behind these politicians, ie. Chuck Coughlin, Chad Willems, Constantine Querard, Chris Baker, and there are probably a few more.

As long as these "political consultants" aka "lobbyists" support Arpaio, GOP politicians will be hard pressed to rock the boat and risk loosing their own financial and political backing. These guys almost literally have GOP politicians by their proverbial balls.

Only by addressing this issue, are moderates going to gain a voice, and their representation, again." END QUOTE:I have been a political activist for over 20 years. I have never been the go-along-to-get-along type. I was the last person this crowd wanted down at the legislature. And boy -- did I quickly learned what happens to a Republican who speaks out against Emperor Pearce, as a hit piece was put out about me shortly after that election on the Sonoran Alliance Blog, that was filled with lies -- calling me a liberal Republican. You step one inch out of the AZGOP group think box you are black balled from the party.Just look at the post from one of the pro-Pearce/Arpaio/Haney people above. I am labeled a "socialist open-borders liberal." When in fact nothing could be further from the truth. You see -- unlike current elected Republicans -- I will NEVER sell out in order to get elected, or stay elected. I may never get elected in Arizona as a result of my speaking out -- but at least I can get up and look at myself in the mirror.

Paula,

I agree with everything you pointed out 100%. Actually I think big money is the problem with politics in general. It's destroying democracy. Approximately 95% of all elections are won by the person with the most money.

But one question for you. Why are you a republican?  I know the Dems aren't perfect
but why not?

Paulapennypacker
Paulapennypacker

OMG Dennis -- These people don't represent the Republican party -- they are far-right extremists who hijacked the party. By their standards Ronald Reagan would be a liberal. This group also hijacked the Tea Party from Ron Paul. Bottom line uber conservatives have never had an original idea of their own. The PurpleLetter Campaign is about taking my party back.

I pray that tea party favorite Newt Gingrich is our nominee -- as I believe that, barring a economic melt down, neither Newt or Mitt can beat Obama -- but if Mitt runs and loses, we will have to put up with these nut jobs for 4 more years. They will be winning that Mitt was the establishment candidate and was not conservative enough. Please, please, please let Newt be our nominee.

Hrobster
Hrobster

You are full of malarkey. These people DO REPRESENT THE REPUBLICAN PARTY THAT BELIEVES IN LAW AND ORDER--that you are'nt a part of. It figures you like someone as stupid as Gingrich, who recently said, "we will have a base on the moon during my second term"and it will become a U.S. state. BECAUSE OF RINO'S LIKE GINGRICH, WE DON'T EVEN HAVE A SPACE PROGRAM. Your type of Republican might as well be on the moon for all the good you do.

Dennis Gilman
Dennis Gilman

The interesting discovery of the Tea Party in Arizona is they are the GOP. The leaders have been players within the party for years and have never let that power slip away.
This became crystal clear during the Pearce recall.

Dennis Gilman
Dennis Gilman

It's nice that a moderate republican is finally speaking up and purple letters are really groovy. Better late then never I guess. And to be fair, there are a few republicans that have shown courage for years. Chad Snow is one and I'm sure there are a few more ( although I dare anyone to find 10 that will publicly call for Arpaio's resignation today)

But lets be clear about a few things. Paula Pennypacker's issues with Arpaio are old news issues and that disturbs me. Even the 100 million dollars — us "lefties" have known and spoken up about for some time now. If those "fiscally conservative" republicans were paying attention it wouldn't have happened in the first place. Arpaio created problems every time the county wanted to audit him, the Az republic, New Times and several other publicans wrote about it as they have on every issue concerning Arpaio for years and you conservatives (moderate or otherwise) didn't give a damn. You were in power. You were silent. You were defensive. You are to blame.

All you good christian, family value-type republicans remember this little fact: There is no news about the uninvestigated sex cases that wasn't already written about by every local newspaper and TV station when it was first exposed well before you all endorsed Sheriff Joe in 2008. Pulitzer Prize investigations exposed Arpaio for you. You deliberately had cotton in your ears and chose to look the other way.

Seriously, where is your shame? Every media outlet covered it as they always have when any news breaks about Arpaio. This isn't recent news. The only news now is solving the mystery as to why it now matters and didn't when it was first discovered. That is a mystery I have no acceptable answer for.

History shall (and should) remember the people of Maricopa County as disgusting and ignorant people who didn't give one GOD DAMN about the sexually abused children.

History will (and should) also remember you as conservatives. Why?

Because us "lefties" were speaking up, protesting, fasting, getting arrested, writing our elected officials, going to BOS meetings and (yes we were) bringing up those sex cases back in 2008. You idolized Arpaio. You protected him. He is your monster. Sure, former Governor Napolitano helped but the only one's blaming her are us "lefties."

Anyone care to challenge me? Do some research. The list is long and it started pretty quickly in Arpaio's reign of terror and started way before you were all trained to fear and hate undocumented people.

He never should've gotten reelected even once but because Amnesty InterNational and the ACLU were just too liberal for a good christian conservative to believe-you let this happen.

And it never stopped there. Month after month, year after year you ignored Arpaio's sick behavoir and even encouraged it. All of it since 1992. And you all should bare some of the responsibility. After all, everyone knows how "conservative" Maricopa County votes. Right?

So while I give props to Republican Paula Pennypacker. I wont be giving her any awards for outstanding courage or creative genius just yet.

Lets ignore the fact that the vast majority of those cases were inherited from an El Mirage Police Department that wasn't exactly a pillar of productivity, effectiveness or efficiency. Almost 400 of the cases had been reported and shelved prior to the SO taking over the caseload.

This does not excuse the cases that were inappropriately cleared and/or ignored.  But lets be honest, folks.  425 cases weren't generated in the 18 months that MCSO took over in El Mirage.  If that were true, there would have had to have been one sexual crime reported every single day for the less that 18 months the SO were there.  If that were the case, then El Mirage has a much worse issue than a lack of law enforcement integrity.

I hate to allow truth to get in the way of your spiteful talking points, Dennis.  I realize truth is not that high on your list of priorities.

Gerry_C
Gerry_C

The most prominent cases that stand out were either initially initiated by MCSO and then dropped or El Mirage took the report and then MCSO dropped the case.  The MCSO contracts called for police protection at one time and investigative services at another time.  Bottom line is that at all times in question, MCSO was the failure in the system.

Yourproductsucks
Yourproductsucks

You are admitting then, that the "425 case" mantra is not accurate information?

One mishandled case is unacceptable. I am not making excuses for the mismanaged/ unworked cases. But the flamboyant overused mantra of 425 cases is inaccurate and unnecessary.

You have it backwards. El Mirage PD inherited the botched cases. Nice try though.

As I said before; the truth does not interest you. You obviously don't want anyone to know anything more than the headlines and talking points.

What agency took care of law enforcement responsibilities in El Mirage prior to 2006?

When were those 425 cases generated and what agency took disposition of them? Or, do you not know? Have you not taken the time to find out? Have you not cared about finding out about the victims and their families? Of course you have! Which can only mean that you are hiding the truth from those you propogandize. Shame on you for lacking integrity in your quest.

Ms. Pennypacker is on par with Mr. Parraz and Mr. Snow when it comes to the Dementia Don.

She was vocal about mentally sick and corrupt Pearce and his twisted policies, and she helped leave the boot impression seared on his fat ass. Now she's going after the most senile and expensive politician in the United States: the Flaccid Failure.

The Old Fool is going down. He will be indicted. He will be perp-walked. And it'll be in part thanks to the efforts of Ms. Pennypacker.

When will you flaming liberals at Stand With Arizona stop supporting the tax and spend government agencies that have tailed, jailed and failed the CITIZENS of Arizona too long with your radical left wing racist rants about others being too soft on the undocumented.

There's NOTHING conservative about your arguments - there's a lot that is NAZI and NATIONALIST about them though.  Help us get comprehensive immigration reform and stop STANDING in the way of a true CONSERVATIVE approach to overcoming the chaos and lawlessness of undocumented aliens in this country.

On this issue, the President of the United States, Barack H. Obama is conservative.  He has done more to stop undocumented immigration in this country than any prior President.

He puts a premium on legal immigration and the value of this Country's constitution regarding the same - it's good for US!

Your liberal, irrational opinions are standing in the way of solving this situation.

Either propose some real solutions or SIT DOWN!

Ladmobagparty

Ex SpurtSshot: So you prefer the steal and spend policies of Joe Arpaio?

Are you saying true conservatives ignore the constitution, retaliate and intimidate their political opponents, run corrupt jails, encourage illegal political contributions, deny responsibility for wrongdoing, ignore crimes, overspend their budgets, defy federal law, and let children be raped and abused without punishing their absuers? When people say Arpaio is a "conservative," is this what they mean? The only thing keeping Liberals from solving these problems is too many Arizonans keep voting for "conservatives" like Arpaio, Brewer, Pearce, et al.

"She is an open-borders social liberal."

And she's the one with the intestinal fortitude to stand up to mentally sick and corrupt politicians like Pearce and Arpaio. It doesn't mean she supports illegal immigration. It means that she wants change in leadership in Arizona because the current leadership is FAILING, miserably.

"Her silly purple pouting will have utterly no impact."

You sure about that? With the full weight of the Justice Department coming down on Arpaio, resulting in possible receivership of the MCSO, this is the VERY least of his problems.

Victims of the Dementia Don (including this newspaper) continue to step forward. Information continues to pour into the DOJ. The DD's day is coming, and when it arrives, the people will rejoice.
