Jan Brewer's Scorpion Lies, Part I

See any "screaming kids" chained to the state Capitol?

Obviously, there's limited room in New Times' print edition to attack all the lies, myths, falsehoods, and half-truths promulgated by Governor Jan Brewer in her ghost-written memoir Scorpions for Breakfast. So there was no way for me to catalog and rebut them all in my recent column on the governor's book.

Therefore, in the interest of shoving some truth into the geriatric, withered mug of Arizona's chief executive, I'm inaugurating a new series called "Brewer's Lies," which will go through Brewer's recent book, debunking all of the prevarications therein. Believe me, it's no small task.

The first lie I wish to tackle, I found to be one of the most offensive. This regards a group of nine students who on April 20, 2010 chained themselves to the Arizona Capitol in a desperate attempt to move Brewer to veto the recently passed Senate Bill 1070, otherwise known as Sand Land's "breathing while brown" statute.

At the time, Brewer was playing coy, letting the public believe that she hadn't decided on whether or not to sign 1070. In fact, she had already made her mind up. Indeed, despite the fact that the bill was the baby of now-disgraced ex-state Senate President Russell Pearce, Brewer makes it seem as if the bill had sprung whole from the vacant space between her ears.

This, too, is a lie. But for right now, let's focus on that group of students called the Capitol Nine. Here is what Brewer had to say about their act of civil disobedience, one which garnered nationwide press.

At one point, nine students chained themselves to the building, yelling, "Today we are chained to the Capitol, just like our community is chained by this legislation." How exactly their community was being "chained" was left unsaid. Capitol police were forced to cut through the chains and forcibly remove the screaming kids. (pg. 113-14)

I'm in a unique position to judge Brewer's ill-informed description because I was present at the Capitol and witnessed the entire protest

The Capitol Nine did not speak while they were chained to the Old Capitol Building, much less yell or scream. Indeed, they were completely silent, unless you count the one or two who could be seen silently praying.

You can witness this for yourself in the video above by local videographer Dennis Gilman. The Capitol Nine even refused to answer questions from the media.

As they were cut loose by bolt cutters and placed in handcuffs, they maintained their stoicism. Inside the building, after these college-age men and women were confined to a room until a sheriff's bus came to pick them up, they finally broke silence, singing the anthem of the 1960's Civil Rights Movement, "We Shall Overcome."

Later, as they were brought out the back way, and placed on a bus headed for Sheriff Joe Arpaio's notorious Fourth Avenue Jail, some continued singing while others chanted "Veto the Bill."

But neither Brewer, nor her ghostwriter, are addressing the singing or chanting that occurred after the demonstrators were arrested.

Instead, they are attempting to portray the Capitol Nine as ill-behaved, out-of control children. In reality, these men and women were dignified, brave, and sincere. They faced disorderly conduct charges and were not released from jail until late that evening

Eventually, interim Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley dropped all charges against the protesters, but these young activists, many of them college students, could not have anticipated Romley's action at the time.

The quote Brewer abuses above is taken from the statements of individuals communicating through bullhorns on behalf of the silent nine.

Brewer mocks the metaphor of Latino community being "chained" by 1070, but the reality is that 1070 was aimed at the undocumented, who are mostly Latino. That means those suspected of being undocumented, those being detained by local law enforcement under the provisions of the law, would of course be non-Anglo.

The legislation is racist, and Brewer is an opportunistic bigot for signing it.

Thankfully, the statute has mostly been enjoined by the federal courts, and the measure itself is headed for the dustbin of history. It will be remembered as a last-ditch effort by nativists at keeping down the brown.

If the governor wants to hang her legacy on this rotten, worm-eaten peg, she's welcome to. But I'm not going to let her get away with lying about those who gallantly defied the ugliness she so readily embraces.

Man, time sucks.  Just look what time has done to Brewer's face.

While I despise Brewer, you're splitting hairs.  The protester on the bull-horn states"we are chained to the state Capitol...." and thereby clearly includes herself with the group chained to the Capitol building.  While you may be technically correct, it is a nuance that is not really all that important.  I say that because you diminish your argument and the argument that you make on behalf of all of us who share your view of the Governor when you focus on splitting hairs over silly details instead of keeping the focus on the big picture.

The law firm that is going to make millions off of SB 1070, Snell and Wilmer appears to have other ties to the governor (Or Norman Bates mother as I like to think of her). There was a piece in today's Republic about her oldest sons legal issue's with Social Security. A nice law firm with offices in Arizona and Nevada was helping the investigation. Snell and Wilmer, again. Is this being paid for or pro bono? Is this a political gift? As always, follow the money.

Well there is one good thing that came from 1070, while it is impossible to spot an illegal individual of hispanic descent looking for work on a street corner, it's very easy to spot an ASSHOLE standing in front of a microphone talking trash and spreading venomous lies.

What follows is a rhetorical question but nevertheless....why hasn't this illiterate fucking cunt, along with her favorite advisor been first impeached and then tried for treason....yes I know because the inmates are now in charge of the asylum. Well on the bright side at least Drunky Face and her corrupt buddy will hopefully be able to explain to the new Lords of the planet how 99 percent of the people here now live in shacks and shit in holes in the backyard. These people like Brewer are nothing but garbage and every time someone sticks a microphone in front of their faces the interviewer should ask them why they are criminals but are not in jail until they can't stand the light of day.

Jan also likes to forget about her dangerously mentally ill son, but, why fund treatment for the mentally ill, its not like they are going to sexually assault anyone..eh Jan?

Hat's off to you, Mr. Lemons....for even getting NEAR this piece of trash she calls a "book"....to read through it...so WE don't have to....and to take the absolute tons of YOUR valuable time to report and debunk the lies this woman spews, every second of her sorry, pathetic, ego inflated life.Truly, you must have a spine of steel. many thanks for wading through the muck and mire....

I can't say anything one way or the other about her supposed drinking (I simply don't know that for a fact).  However, it wasn't long after she signed SB11070 that I remember one bizarre and needless lie which was quoted and queried afterwards by some attentive reporter.  The quoted lie could be looked up in the archives somewhere, but as I recall, speaking to some Republican group in the east valley, she'd said that her father died when she was 11 years old, and went on to say how offended she was at being called a nazi, because her father died fighting the nazis....inferring that her father had been in the armed forces and fought and died in combat during WWII.  I did some quick calculating when I read her statement, and came to the conclusion that she must be much, much older than she looks since WWII ended in 1945.

The reporter followed up later and learned that Brewer's father was never in the armed forces, that he'd been a civilian employee in a Nevada munitions' factory during the war, and that he died in 1955 or 1956 from a chronic medical condition not related to his work in the munitions factory.  Nevertheless, instead of apologizing for the "misunderstanding," Brewer tried to justify her untruth, really spinning it, and must have uttered it to gain sympathy from her audience over apparently having been called a nazi.

Brewer (e.g. the depiction of the chained students), Arpaio (see today's Laurie Roberts' column in the Republic), and Pearce all seem to have that undesirable trait of combative dishonesty, and instead of apologizing they try and justify it.

I don't envy Mr Lemons having to read that ghost written piece of garbage.

I wonder if it qualifies him for hazard pay ?

Kudos to the Bird for taking on the monumental debunking project.  Hope the forked-tongued airhead gets a whiff of the foul stench that is the book she never wrote or read.

Looking foward to reading this little series on Brain-Fart's lies. This will be the only way,I would ever know about all the lies she had some one else write for her,as I would never purchase this pile of lies.......The Capitol nine will be remembered in Arizona history as true brave & dedicated heros in the struggle against racism & bigotry in our state.Their brave act helped to fuel & mobilize the Anti-SB1070 movement in AZ & across the nation. They helped in getting much of the older generations(me included) off their ass & out there to stand up to the extremist that have overtaken our state. The future of our state should be in good hands as long as we have youths such as The Capitol Nine, who are willing to stand up for their rights & the rights of others. I applaud & Thank you Capitol Nine !.......Brain-Fart can spin it anyway she wants, everyone knows she's an twit anyway.

Brewer is a racist and that is the truth.  She wanted to make the students look bad, but because you were there to witness it Stephen we know better.  If she was only as good at doing her job as she is lying.  The book probably contains so many untruths, it should be sold in the fiction category.  She is a terrible governor who has done more harm to this state than any other  governor before her.  All for a balanced budget which we know is not balaced at all.  The cuts to education and health care were done to hurt minorities more than it was done to balance the budget.  I'm glad she cannot run again; however, we are stuck with her until 2014, She has a lot more damage to accomplish between now and then.

Thanks again for setting the record right.  I wonder, did Brewer and Sheriff Joe Arpaio use the same ghost writer?  They seem to both dribble the same lies.

Snell & Wilmer is the law firm where Ben Quayle works.

The same Ben Quayle who supported GED Jan's attempts at removing Colleen Mathis from the AIRC.

Mr. Lemons did a huge service.  I sat in Barnes and Noble and read Brewer's book.  That way I did not have to pay for it.  I am not cheap, but the thought of buying her book is nauseating.  I then learned that reading her book was nauseating.  It was like I was being water boarded, my pulse pounding in my head like drums that just won't stop.

Conclusions:

The Amazon rankings are about right.

I think Stephen probably has the mental toughness for Navy Seal training if he got through this bound toilet paper.

After I got through it, I believed that I could have enjoyed a bowl of scorpions for breakfast.

The book is a distorted and even dishonest view of the issues.  It offers nothing about real solutions to any of the problems she identifies.

ARS 38-311 can certainly help in that realm. It allows the governor, any state and judicial officer to be impeached for high crimes, misdemeanors or malfeasance in office.
