Russell Pearce's Bile Gone from Public Life for Good

Russell Pearce, dressed for his next job assignment: high school janitor

Folks have been asking why I haven't blogged yet on state Senate President Russell Pearce's removal from the body politic last night when he was defeated in the Legislative District 18 recall race, 53-45 percent. A massive win for challenger Jerry Lewis, Citizens for a Better Arizona and for anyone who longs for moderation here in Sand Land.

See, while Arizona was being freed from Pearce's poisonous influence on public life, I was being freed of a gall bladder filled with stones. The attack came on suddenly, and was quite painful. As surgeons at a local hospital were putting me under for my cholecystectomy, Pearce was still Senate President.

By the time I came to, he was gone, as was the source of my own physical anguish.

The percentages could wiggle around a tad after the county counts the remaining early and provisional ballots, but not enough to change things for Pearce.

Also, there's the fact that he's conceded, in the lamest terms possible. Class act, he is not.

The county likely will have the LD18 provisional ballots (933) and the remaining early ballots in the district (2,310) tabulated by week's end.

The earlies broke along the same lines as the total vote, percentage-wise. So Pearce knows there are no miracles coming, which is one reason he "conceded."

As the final canvass is unlikely to change anything, the only question remaining is, when will Pearce have to pack up and git?

Arizona Secretary of State spokesman Matt Roberts says the SOS' office has "tentatively scheduled the completion of the canvass on November 21."

He said the county expects it will have its final numbers ready by November 16, for presentation to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors.

Then, on November 21 the SOS will "host the largely ceremonial act of issuing the certificate of election and notifying the Senate of the election results."

Roberts adds, "The Senate will then swear [Lewis in] and that'll be it. When that occurs is up to them."

Now, this is a little troubling, as this is the same state Senate that just removed Independent Redistricting Chair Colleen Mathis based on rumor, innuendo, and half-truths.

(Note: Fox News reports that the Republican Senate Caucus is meeting tomorrow to pick a new Senate President. Sheesh, these guys don't wait till the body is lukewarm, much less cold.)

Thus, the law is not held in very high esteem by many Senate members. Would it shock you if the wingnuts in the Senate did something to hijack the process of Lewis being sworn in?

This would backfire on Senate Republicans, of course, but so has the redistricting coup. If you're shameless and you hold power, there's a lot that you can get away with. In the short term.

Still, I see this as an unlikely scenario. The redistricting mess requires a little 'splainin'. Obfuscation is easier there. Nullifying an outright win in a recall election? That's a harder sell.

As to the whys and wherefores of last night's win by Lewis, check out my column last week, where I was the first to predict a Lewis victory. I did believe it would be closer, but I'm heartened by the fact Lewis pulled a substantial 8 point win, percentage-wise. Ballot-wise, we're talking about a 1,628 spread at last count.

So when they say every vote counts, chickadees, they ain't kiddin'.

Finally, as to all the talk that Pearce will one day run again, for something, anything, well, he may. But I don't see him being successful.

His recall made history. His own people are sick to death of him, so much so they threw him out on his ear. And he fomented a lot of bad blood with the dirty tricks of his followers and their sham candidate Olivia Cortes

If they elected school janitors in Mesa, I'm sure he'd make a fine one. Other than that, his political career is kaput.

As for my colleague Nick Martin's Tweet wondering when I will lambaste the bootlickers of the Capitol press corps for getting it wrong so often on this recall campaign -- a recall they dismissed only until recently -- be patient, my friend. I'm preparing their punishment, which is not unlike a perfumed ice pick to the kidneys. Albeit verbal.

Hope you're feeling better Stephen. While you were having your cholecystectomy, Arizonans were performing a hemorrhoidectomy at the state capitol.

That was one painful surgery Mesans performed, but the hemorrhoid (Pearce) is gone.

Now, if we can get rid of the brain tumor that is the MCSO shurf...

Indeed. Pearce went and stole everything near and dear to Arizonans, including the crown jewels, in concert with his mentor and good buddy the MCSO shurf.

Thank you, Chem Trail, I think your toxic comments pretty well sum up the Tea Pary intellect.  And when illegals start "rapping", that's when I put my foot down ... I much prefer rock and roll.

"I much prefer rock and roll."

As do I. Any band or artist in particular?

Unlike toxic chem trail karen, I don't mean to put down rap -- I suppose it speaks to today's generation, but having grown up in the 50's and 60's, I much prefer the artists of that era.  They sang about peace, love and understanding ... a completely opposite message from what we get from the likes of chem trail karen and her band of hateful idiots.

The FEATHERED FUCKTURD GOT SICK? GOOD!!!

I PRAYED THAT YOU WOULD. THANK YOU LORD.

Senator Russell Pierce will be back and stronger then ever. We need more restrictions on liberal media in this state.  When illegals start rapping and killing again you will all beg Russell  to return by executive decision.

RECALL LEWIS!

Mr. Lemons, unlike you, actually has ethics and is disciplined.

Pearce has fallen, and likely will not return to power, ever. Senator Lewis was elected by the same batch of people who elected Pearce in 2010. Only difference? Pearce ignored the will of the voters.

Do us all a favor. STFU and GTFOOH!!!!

Rest up, Stephen.  Job well done.  I know you'll still be keeping track of events to follow.

Mr. Lemons,

Sorry to hear about your health, we were wondering where you had run off to, I kinda figured you had left on a much deserved vacation or to celebrate rus-SELL's demise from some exotic island, sorry that wasn't the case.  Get well my friend, Arizona needs men like you, you make us all proud, like Mr. Churchill, you walk softly but carry a big stick.

US War Veteran, Well said. Without Stephen Lemons work on Arizona's rat nest, which began years ago and Dennis Gilman, documentaire videographer, Arizona's people would still be kept in the dark by a local media that hides the truth. The lack of local coverage on the recall campaign was obvious and disturbing. Howie Fisher, Greg Patterson, Stan Barnes and the Capitol crew of reporters do not deserve to occupy the TV talking head seats week in and week out for years. It's time to shake up the local TV media/talking heads. They have done a disservice to the public. If they have all done their jobs before the 2008 elections Arizona taxpayers and society wouldn't have been destroyed by all these arrogant and self-serving elected officials, their henchmen/women and their lobbyists -- arpaio, thomas, pearce, bungaard, brewer, coughlin, high ground, CCA, kavanaugh, lisa aubuchon, rachel alexander, hendershott, fox, black and more. How can the local media remain so clueless or have they swept all this corruption under the rug? The people are paying attention. We are not all just Sun City, where the sheriff holds court at the expense of the rest of Maricopa County. The voters of LD18 have started to turn the tide in Arizona. Thank you for listening to the many hard workers in the recall campaign. They said it couldn't be done and you did it! Thank you all!

You're a damn liar, there is no way Russell Pearce would make a fine Mesa school janitor and no parents would want that angry redneck anywhere near their kids.  You'd never know if he might go off on some kid for saying "Hola" and chuck the kid in the nearest dumpster.

So sad that nothing has changed except a mormon/latino district has lost power. Ignorant liberals are so stupid its funny.

Tommy Collins

Herm, you do know there is a distinct difference between ignorance and stupidity, yes? For instance Mister Pearce was ignorant in many ways and the way he handled his campaign was clearly stupid. Which is why he lost. And you assert that 'liberals' are ignorant and stupid, eh?

Fush Yumeng

Granted, Pearce and Lewis agree on many things. But that wasn't the point of the recall. The objective was to put someone in with a measure of common sense and humanity. Not the blustering buffoon that was and is Pearce.

Mr. Lemons, thank you for your courage and awesomeinvestigative reporting.  Certainly youdeserve a great deal of credit for the successful recall of the odious RussellPearce.  I found your website about ayear ago after I had exchanged a number of emails with Mr. Pearce, the subjectof which was basically the specter of Neo-Nazi sympathizers and domesticviolence perpetrators serving in the state legislature.  It was then that I learned how unremarkableand common Mr. Pearce truly is.  Hisemails were filled with incomplete sentences and poor grammar, along with pedestrianremarks typically of the most redneck bubba – difficult to believe that thiswas the “author” of ground-breaking state legislation. In fact, at first Idoubted that it was he who was sending the emails … until late one night whilesitting at my computer, along comes an email from Mr. Pearce.  Actually, it was a message intended for hislegal counsel, Kris Koback.   I suspect that, since my first name also beginswith “K” that Pearce’s computer automatically put in my address as he typed inthe first letter of Kobach’s name … a sort of electronic profiling, if youwill.  The subject of the email was aboutexpanding SB1070 to include violations of municipal ordinances, such as “carson blocks and too many people living in a single residence” or some such (theexact wording was later included in your column, the Capitol Times and other newssources).  Anyway, the idea was to makeit possible for people to report such low-level violations to authorities, whothen would be mandated to check the legal status of the accused … in otherwords, a handy tool for neighbors to harass anyone who is brown and poorregardless of their immigration status.

Noticing the confidential nature of the email, I immediately recognizedthat I had to get it into the hands of as many people as possible, so Iforwarded the message to every reporter and immigration attorney whoseaddresses I could find, including yours. I have been a daily reader of your column ever since.   That said, I see some symbolism in thetiming of your gall stones – just as your body was rejecting a sinister foreignobject, so was the electorate rejecting a sinister force that you has so longworked to eliminate.  Thank you again, and Godspeed in your recovery.

[".... difficult to believe that this was the “author” of ground-breaking state legislation"]

Mister Pearce did NOT author SB-1070. He SPONSORED the bill. It was written in draft and final form by Kris Kobach.

Why media types continue to call him the 'author' is beyond me. From what I can see he has trouble writing monosyllabic words, such as "no". Anything beyond that has to be written by someone else.

Thank you for sharing that email from the former senator. Gawd, it feels good to say that... "former senator".....

(To the "Guest" with the long post.)   I too picked up on those amendments to SB 1070 when they were added.  Could be a police call for a dog barking, grass too tall, and any other alleged nuisance code violations, such as those you mention, among a city's ordinances to set off a "reason" for a cop or other city enforcer to ask to see the person's papers.   Since I don't "look" Hispanic, don't speak English with an accent, and don't have a latino last name, I  likely would not be asked for papers.  The intent was so crystal clear to me back then.  Thank goodness, to my knowledge that section is still enjoined.
