Russell Pearce Recall Opponent Tommy Cattey Drops Out, Endorses Jerry Lewis

Tommy Cattey, the Mesa resident who had filed paperwork to campaign against state Senate President Russell Pearce in the upcoming Legislative District 18 recall election, has dropped out of the race and endorsed fellow contender Jerry Lewis.

Cattey, who made his announcement at the Wright House in Mesa this morning, told me via phone that he had the 621 signatures necessary in order to have his name placed on the November 8 ballot, but that he didn't want to risk splitting the vote and allowing Pearce to win.

"It was just too big of a gamble," the audiologist and former Marine explained, adding, "and as corny as it sounds, Russell Pearce has got to go."

That leaves neophyte Olivia Cortes, and Mesa educator Jerry Lewis still in the battle to end Pearce's political career. Some believe Cortes is a plant by the Pearce camp, but she has denied she's in it to split the vote in favor of Pearce.

I commend Cattey on his noble act, putting the best of his community ahead of ego and ambition. Now if Cortes will fall on her sword, the contest will be between Lewis and Pearce, as it should be.

All Cortes can do is pull some votes from Lewis. Whether intentionally or not, she's essentially doing the bidding of the Pearce camp by being in the race. I urge her to step aside, and let Lewis and Pearce duke it out.

Thank you Mr. Cattey.  Your decision to step aside and not water down the vote that can rid us of the repulsive ogre is a very honorable one!

Olivia Cortes is part of Russell Pearce.

Olivia Cortes filed to run as a Clean Elections candidate.  That would give her a $21,533 campaign slush fund, which could be spent on campaign signs that she can then keep for her next try for public office.   Does Mesa elect its rabies control officers, or are they hired?

Anyway, her deadline for collecting $5 contributions from 220 LD 18 voters was yesterday.  They don't have to be turned over to the state until next Thursday, though.

It will be interesting to see (1) if she has 220 supporters, and (2) if she does,  their names.

Only someone who would take pride in being as smart as Russell Pearce would believe that "All Cortes can do is pull some votes from Lewis."

This election is essentially an "open"  Republican primary.  If Cortes had run in the 2010 primary, she would have pulled votes away from Pearce.  A higher percentage of them might have been Hispanic and/or women, but they would still have been lost by Pearce.

This time around, even former Pearce supporters will be offended that he thinks they are stupid enough to vote based on ethnicity or gender.

Let's review.  Pearce is stupid.  His maneuver with Cortes is one more stupid thing.  The Cortes candidacy should be welcomed by Lewis supporters as further evidence of Pearce stupidity.

Russell Pearce is desperately needed in the AZ Senate.  But he is not needed by LD18.  He is needed by a bunch of outside interests that he sold us out to long ago.  They will provide the big bucks to keep him in power.  LD18 is all that matters.  Vote for Lewis and end the Pearce corruption.

Strategic thinking Mr. Cattey!  Thank you.

Enough praise cannot be bestowed upon Mr. Cattey.  He is one class act. Tommy Cattey also took time out to attend and hear the Superior Court proceedings on Monday, Pearce's weak legal challenge alleging the invalidity of the recall petitions, thus the invalidity of the scheduled recall election itself. That's more than can be said for Pearce. Neither plaintiff Pearce, who initiated the action,  nor his proxy "plaintiff" Ross showed up. The chicanery involving announced "candidate" Olivia Cortes is something else again. There well may be something to what Bobunf said: "Of course, it may be that something is hanging over her; a legal problem of some kind?  That she thinks Pearce will help her with?  Blackmail of some kind?  Maybe he's promised her a stay at the Ritz Carlton."

Mr. Cattey, good decision. Now let's work on ridding ourselves of mentally ill Pearce.

Thank you Mr. Cattey for doing the noble thing - that's a rarity in politics these days.  I have to say I was intrigued by some of your ideas, especially a unicameral legislature or at least reducing the size and cost of the current legislature.  Let's continue the conversation after we get rid of Pearce.

Olivia has got to know she's in only as a spoiler; only as a tool to confuse some Hispanic voters.  It's a very cynical play by Pearce and his supporters.  Olivia has got to know who are the only ones doing anything for her candidacy - Pearce supporters.

She has to know that she's been put up like a strawman.

What will she tell her grandchildren:  I let a corrupt xenophobe use me like a whore?

It's a sleazy business she should get out of.

Of course, it may be that something is hanging over her; a legal problem of some kind?  That she thinks Pearce will help her with?  Blackmail of some kind?  Maybe he's promised her a stay at the Ritz Carlton.

I find it sad that I am rooting for a Republican, albeit a "moderate" Republican, but I am.  Mr. Lewis, kick Senator Pearce's tea bagger ass!

Jerry Lewis represents a better future for Arizona than the shameful destructive path the elected officials have taken Arizona down, seized their assets, destroying innocent lives, breaking up families and providing nothing for the children. GO JERRY LEWIS!

Thank you Mr. Cattey, you've done a great public service to the people of Arizona. It's time to stop the ongoing corruption, fraud and decades of failed leadership.

Thank you Mr. Cattey!  Now Olivia Cortes we await your announcement.  GO JERRY LEWIS FOR AZ SENATE!!  A respectful, educated, experienced man from the LDS community - what's not to love :-)

If only obviously fake candidate Olivia Cortez would drop out...  Has anyone heard that Pearce campaign consultant Constantin Querard is paying Tea Party supporters to get her signatures for her?  That's what I'm hearing. That shows how worried Pearce is, he has to use underhanded tactics to keep power. I guess that's what outside money from out-of-your-district and out-of-state campaign donors allow you to do.

If she can somehow manage to pull enough votes away from Lewis to cause a Pearce victory (God forbid) then she will have served her sole purpose for being in this race.  Hopefully Lewis will have enough supporters and votes that Pearce won't stand a chance no matter what underhanded tricks Pearce thinks up...........

Olivia Cortes... You have no chance of winning.  Step aside and save yourself the embarrassment.

Kudos to Mr. Cattey. I'm glad he gave this some serious consideration and has chosen the high road.

We don't want to waste a lot of time hoping Olivia Cortes will withdraw. I personally think she is 'motivated' to stay in the process, assuming she can garner the signatures needed to be on the ballot.

Isn't THAT interesting that "she" filed to run as a Clean Elections candidate and all it entails.   Hmmm.  It'll be interesting to watch how far Olivia and her handlers are going to go with their scheme.

The Russell Pearce recall has made national news and has had at least one big write-up in the New York Times.   There's three months to go before the election.

If they persist in their masquerade, how is Olivia going to handle it when she gets a call from the NY Times for a personal interview?   Or maybe a request for a one-on-one interview with CNN or any network TV entity asking all the right questions?  By the time she receives such a call, they will have been tipped off that's she's an impostor.

So have at it, boys and girls.  Coverage on 60 Minutes with Pearce, Olivia and viable Jerry Lewis would be ideal.   Arizona's twing-twang politics will once again provide the rest of the nation with great entertainment.

This proves Constantin Querard AND Russell Pearce are behind this faux candidate. Querard can't run a campaign unless it tightly attached to the public teat.

THIS should be voter fraud--when the candidate does nothing to promote their campaign.

I'm sure he loves being placated by you.  You have no intention of continuing any conversation with Cattey.

Perhaps the opposite.  Is it possible she was given something?  Not saying she was, just looking at all possible reason as I am wondering what her motivation is.  It is strangethat has not been in any media interviews, doesn't even appear to be campaigning.

pearce is the master of under-handed tactics. He learned well from the Flaccid Fool of MCSO after being fired by him.

There is no level too low for them to stoop.

Let's hope she pulls an equal or more votes from Pearce as this can go both ways.I'm rather surprised that Pearce and crew would pull such a risky stunt that couldbackfire on him.

Chad Snow

Your product, good to see that you can read my thoughts and intentions.  Just like Lisa Hauser was channeling President Taft and Morris Goldwater in court the other day.  Does Pearce have an Ouija board for such mind reading?

Tommy Collins
Tommy Collins

Not true, actually. Chad is very good about communicating and takes time out of his schedule to talk with whomever calls. I would bet money that Mr. Cattey and Mr. Snow have dialogue long after the recall is done and pearce is pulling grass with his eye teeth in the fetid pasture.

Tommy Collins
Tommy Collins

Vic, keep in mind that at this point they are not trying to win the election, they are doing everything they can to save pearce the embarrassment of being the ONLY senate president to ever be recalled and then defeated in a recall election. They have nothing to lose, since they've already lost in the recall.

Yes, they are aware it's likely the votes will pull away from pearce, but anything is worth a shot at this point. They are also very aware that it's VERY likely he will not be elected, especially given the reputation and veracity of his opponent.

Having the right to run and actually running are two different things.

If her motivation for running is to help Russell Pearce get elected then she is not really running for office but rather acting as a shill and attempting to distort the will of the electorate.

The simple solution to this, for future recall elections, is to hold the equivalent of a primary with the two highest vote getters in a final election held a week or so later.

Or another approach is to have everyone to vote for their 1st, 2nd, 3rd, ... choice and then the two highest vote getters in the 1st choice category are re-evaluated with the other candidates eliminated.  For example, if I vote in the following order Cortes, Lewis, Pearce and Cortes isn't one of the top two 1st choice vote getters then my vote would be considered to be a vote for Lewis.  If I only voted for Cortes and didn't select a 2nd and 3rd place choice then my vote would be discarded if Cortes wasn't one of the top 1st choice candidates.
