Russell Pearce's Supporters' Signs, Olivia Cortes Hides Out (w/Update)

randycortes.JPG
Note the proximity. Photo was taken late Saturday. The signs were still on the corner of Alma School Road and Birchwood Avenue late Sunday, though it looked like someone had taken a whack to the sign with Parraz's mug

Though I try to avoid watching the PBS Horizon clown table for fear that I'll pull an Elvis on my TV set, folks tip me off whenever smarmy local hack Howie Fischer says something dumb, which is nearly every week.

So, sometimes I am forced to watch it online. (Sigh.)

What kills me about Fischer is that he likes to act like a know-it-all, when he very clearly does not know it all. Like his assumption on the show, asserted by other panelists as well, that the illegal signs posted in Mesa by Citizens Who Oppose the Pearce Recall, had all come down as of Friday night.

Not all of them. Roving around Mesa this weekend with my partner-in-Pearce-loathing Dennis Gilman, I spotted some still up. One, amusingly, had been posted at the corner of Birchwood Avenue and Alma School Road, a few yards from where an Olivia Cortes "Si, se Puede" sign had been posted. (Please see update below.)

CWOPR sign at McKellips and Pasadena, photo taken late Sunday afternoon

Saw another CWOPR sign at McKellips Road and Pasadena Drive. These signs were still in place as of late Sunday afternoon. Though, to be fair, maybe the CWOPR people just missed them.

There were several Cortes signs up in Mesa, despite the fact that they are up too soon and do not contain any contact info.

I dropped by Cortes' apartment home three times this weekend, trying to catch her for a face-to-face interview, which she has so far been successfully avoiding.

On Saturday, her sister came to the door, but Cortes was not in, she claimed. On Sunday, I rang her bell several times on two different occasions, but no one answered.

Cortes is retired and did not meet the deadline to submit her $5 slips to score Clean Elections money. Her signs don't look cheap, so the question is, who paid for them and who is putting them up?

Sources close to Cortes have indicated to me that she was recruited to run by a pro-Pearce individual who attends the same Mormon church as she does. Cortes has been advised not to answer her door or answer the phone, unless it's someone she knows.

One of several Cortes signs along Country Club Drive

For the record, Cortes has denied that she's a Pearce plant meant to dilute the recall election vote, scheduled for November 8. She did this in an e-mail Q&A we did earlier this month.

Another item fumbled by Fischer: the fact that the CWOPR signs contain falsehoods, one being that Randy Parraz, co-founder of Citizens for a Better Arizona, supported the boycott of Arizona over Pearce's Senate Bill 1070.

Parraz did not support the boycott, and Parraz has threatened legal action as a result of this falsehood and others.

Fischer pooh-poohed the whole thing, just as he once pooh-poohed the recall itself.

"Well, OK," Mr. Smug told his fellow clown-tablers. "By the time we actually litigate that, we'll be talking about the 2012 election."

Interesting that Fischer holds the facts in such contempt. Perhaps that's why he gets it wrong so dang often.

Note: One last point about political signs: most lawn signs are OK, as they are not covered by the state statute in question, according to Mesa officials. There are a number of Jerry Lewis signs in people's yards around Mesa.

As long as it's in your yard, it's legit, according to the city. But if it's in the right of way more than 60 days before the election, it's not.

UPDATE, 4:31PM: Just learned that Cortes's signs have also been ordered down by the city of Mesa. Deadline, today at 5 PM. (CWOPR have the same deadline.) Read the letter Cortes was sent, here.

Stephen, Great reporting. Keep shining the harsh spot light on the "Pearce" team that has made a mockery out of the state of Arizona and our Constitution.

We should take up a collection to finance some campaign signs to "Elect Olivia's Sister."

Olivia's Sister seems to be much more of a public figure these days, than Olivia herself.

By the way, do we have any official confirmation that Olivia has a sister?  Do we know the sister's name?  Are they really sisters?  There was a time when two women living together and claiming to be sisters ... well, no, that never happened in Mormon wards, I guess.

So some of the Cortes signs are red, and some are green?  How Mexican of her.

Now it's confirmed.

Cortes is nothing but a Pearce shill, running to dilute the votes and help Pearce win.

She has never actively campaigned. She hasn't even turned in her sigs to SoS Ken Bennett.

However, Mr. Lewis is sure to open up the industrial-strength can of whoop ass on Pearce, guaranteeing Pearce's demise and opening a new chapter in Arizona history. One that is a lot sunnier and brighter than the one we are currently in.

"Partner-in-Pearce loathing"

I would say LOL but I'll just say I like this title.

Pearce's genius-boy Matt Tolman actually posted a whiny statement on his "anonymous" blog about how the City of Mesa is favoring Jerry Lewis over Russell Pearce because they only made Tolman's group take down their signs.  It was too nuanced for Tolman to realize that his signs were in the public right-of-way, while Lewis's signs are in people's yards.  http://thoughtsonmesa.blogspot... (see comments section for Tolman's response)

But for fun, let's stipulate to Troll-mans' argument for a second and say this:  The City of Mesa SHOULD be for Lewis, because he will be infinitely better for the city.  Pearce is ruining Mesa's reputation, and his policies have forced costs onto the city that are difficult to bear.  So, yeah, darn right the City of Mesa supports Lewis!!

Anyway, mister "rule of law" bragged about how he was going to defy the law on the city's request that he take down the signs.

Matt Tolman = that snarky, cackling, little pet that always hangs around Jabba the Hut.

I wonder which LDS Ward Cortes attends? I know the former bishop who once served at the North Pagago Stake in North Mesa, whose LDS members comprised mostly of Native Americans, Pacific Islanders and some Hispanics(ergo another Hispanic ward from the same stake, spoken in Spanish). Not sure if Cortes attends this one.

That's a handy reference tool. Thanks.  Olivia lives at 863 N. Cherry (north of the Westwood High School football field), and her ward is the 25th ward at 848 N. Westwood.  In the same building, same address,  is the Mesa Grande Branch with services in Spanish.  Since somebody said in a post on some article that she came to the U.S. from Mexico when she was 18, one would think that she speaks fluent English, but maybe her preference is the Mesa Grande Branch.

Not a bad idea (to finance some campaign signs to "Elect Olivia's Sister.")  That cracked  me up.

The best I can find, from one source (below), is that her "sister's" name is Lianora.

And a little "si, se puede" just for good measure.

She's just another one of Pearce's flithy dirty campaign tactics.

Yup. All she ever does is go to the store and church. No real community involvement as far as I know......

Actually, I don't know anything about that troglodyte. I don't think anyone does except for her own familia and her closest Pearce shrills.

From Tolman's blog "This recall will set president for years to come."

What?  I believe Matt intended to say "precedent", although he is partly correct - it will determine that Pearce will not be the Senate President for years to come.  I seriously can't believe that someone who can't speak proper English (Tolman and Brewer) and someone who is completely bankrupt (Ross) are the only people still behind Pearce.

Word is she attends the one at 9th place and westwood, but that's unconfirmed

Deep into that doorway peering, long I stood there wondering, fearing, Doubting, dreaming dreams no voters ever dared to dream before; But the doorbell seemed to be broken, and the stillness gave no token, And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, "Lianora!"This I repeated, and an echo murmured back the word, "Lianora!"-- Merely this, and nothing more.

Despite the City's August 24 letter to Cortes saying that her unlawful signs have to be removed by 5 pm on Monday August 29, at least two of them, maybe all of them, remain as they were installed.  For example, the one on the fence along Alma School, just north of Birchwood, and the one on the fence at the northwest corner of Broadway and Extension.

Unlike Jerry Lewis, Cortes' is not even an official candidate for state senator yet since she still hasn't turned in her petitions.  Deadline for her petitions is September 9, which is also when legal signs she may have can begin being lawfully put up.

Somebody from the city will be a very privileged individual. When Olivia (not her "sister') comes to pick up her signs that the city has confiscated, that person will be one of the few people who has ever even seen Olivia Cortes.

Since Cortes is a Republican, as is Jerry Lewis, isn't it strange that we've not heard any threatening remarks from Pearce operative Chuck Coughlin, such as that which Coughlin made aimed at Lewis,  that "politics is a team sport," and indicating that any Republican who ran against Pearce would never be successful in politics.

The November 8 election is more than two months away.  It will be interesting to watch how the Pearce campaign's  scheme with vendito Olivia Cortes plays out.

I hate to be juvenile, but seriously.....Matt Tolman is a douche.  I live near him, and he has a tiny, tiny, band of followers, and the rest of everyone thinks he is a weasel.  Least respected man in the neighborhood.  I have even heard people say, "Well, Matt Tolman has the same position I do on [whatever issue], so maybe I should rethink things...."

Ross, out of the thousands of comments I've read on many many message boards over the years, that is one of the funniest I have ever read.  Gotta be in the top 5!!

AWESOME!

One would think so.  My Spanish is rotten and since I could only find the masculine ending,  which I'd seen before applied to a female, I stuck with the "o."

Wouldn't it be "vendida" given the feminine gender?

Oops, that's "vendido"  (not "vendito")
